Supporters Shield
It may not be much to look at. It may not be as meaningful as the cup. But once again, it is
ours. With Seattle's loss to San Jose the Galaxy have clinched the MLS Supporters Shield for the
second year in a row. In simple terms, that means they won the league by securing more regular
season points than any other team (with two games to spare!

The playoff race
Saturday's 1–1 draw in San Jose put Kansas City in first place in the East with 45 points.
With the opportunity to overtake them and gain a one point advantage, the Philadelphia Union were
unable to prevent Juan Pablo Angel's 90th minute header and had to settle for a 1–1 draw and
second place in the standings with 44 points.
Now that the Gold Cup, and our exhausting 4-game West Coast road adventure are over, it's time to
put on my editorial hat and revive my "Better Red Than Dead" column. Let's take a look at where the
Red Bulls sit in the standings and what they would likely need to accomplish to win the 2011
Supporters' Shield.

Is Backe's Main Objective Sliding Out of View?It was Hans Backe's #1 goal coming in to the
2011 campaign. No, not MLS Cup. Our Viking leader wanted the Red Bulls to own the league's best
record by season end and take home the Supporters' Shield as the franchise's first ever legitimate
piece of silverware.
Oh let the debate rage on.
New York Red Bull manager Hans Backe stated over the weekend to the New York Post that his main
goal for the season is a Supporter's Shield trophy, not a MLS Cup.
"My target is to win the Shield. I think we're good enough to compete with the best teams.
