All Time Best & Worst MLS Teams (single season & multiple)
How do this year's teams stack up?
- Columbus lost three of their last four, which means that they ended up tied for the worst
Supporters Shield winners ever with the 2004 Crew.

D.C. United 1: 0 Columbus Crew
Six Word Novel Recap A decent team, with terrible supporters.
Let me just start by saying that Steve Cronin impressed the hell out of me last night. He played
confidently, and he did not hesitate to come off of his line or even out of the box. At one point
last night, he ran almost to the corner flag to shield a Crew player off the ball until it ran out
for a goal kick.

Freshly back from the land of the Timbers where they get Sounders games on FSN live (obviously
dependent on conflicts). That's great if Seattle gets access to Clark County for Academy players.
Plus it helps to establish which team is "major" first. Remember these "advanced" pacing standings
are based on season long form for [.

1) Various records to watch for:
- Eric Avila has made 16 subs without a start. Needs four more in the final five games to break
the record, or three to tie.
- The worst Supporters Shield winners in MLS history were the 2004 Columbus Crew at 1.633 PPG.
Somebody will need to finish with 50 points to surpass them.

Many will like to look at this match and say the Sounders played better than Chivas and so deserved
to win. I'm a results focused guy though, they tend to actually wind up in the standings and the
trophies. Teams either earn results or they don't. In this case Zach Thorton earned the results. He

With the conclusion of the Crew at Fire and their two-two draw there is another round down. The
playoff race is much less clear than Sounders fans would hope. Crew fans though likely are enjoying
their shot at getting a second Shield in a row. First the hunt for the next domestic trophy, the

Looking at the standings after the Fire's 1-0 loss to D.C. United late Saturday night, I came to
the conclusion that any hopes the Fire had of taking the 2009 Supporter's Shield (the honor given
to the league leaders at the end of the regular season) had burned out. The Fire had dropped
another 3 points at home and the two squads in front of them - Columbus and Houston - were facing a
pair of winnable games on Sunday.

Seattle travels down to the Bay Area to face San Jose for the third match this season with the
Heritage Cup on the line, while many would think this is a match made for victory it is not. What
it is is an average home team hosting an average road team. While victory [...]

The story will likely be focused on the Center Referee and Freddie Ljungberg's double yellow. The
first was for Simulation, what we all know as diving and the second is not listed in the match
report. While it was likely Dissent, the 2nd Yellow was so quick one could question. What I [...]

First a plug for the ECS pregame fest at Fuel/McCoys, and even more fun is that they are hosting an

Next week is big for the Sounders. They have a chance to return Seb/Levesque/etal to the Semis of
the US Open Cup for a third straight year. All it will take is beating the Wizards with Keller on
the pitch for a Full 90. Also looming though is the Saturday match v THE dominant [...]

So as I was going about updating my statistical tables, and the Sounders FC league schedule, I
learned something. While the second set of 10 matches is mainly at home, there is a small problem.
While opponents up to this point have earned 1.26 points per match, the 2nd 10 (that includes the
Crew) are [.

Well, simply it is one point on the table. My guest ratings are up at Prost Amerika. They may cause
a little controversy for a 2-2 draw. My recommendations for Man of the Match would be Riley, Jaqua,
Montero and Keller. All four were key to getting the road point. Sounders currently with an [...]

It's been four days since they clinched it, but I wanted to congratulate the Columbus Crew on
winning their second Supporters' Shield. Of course, the trophy they really want is the MLS Cup next
month, but I hope they can allow themselves a few seconds of satisfaction. I like this edition of
the Crew more than the side that won a Supporters' Shield in 2004.

MLS Rumors 14 October @ 12:04 PM EST
With Columbus capturing the Supporters Shield the debate is bound to ensue again. Which is more of
a feat, winning the Supporter's Shield or the MLS Cup? Our view is that the true measure of a team
is over the course of a season not in a knock out tournament. Therefore we believe the Columbus
Crew are the real champions regardless of who wins MLS Cup.

That's the question that is likely to define the success of DC United over the next two or more
years.
With the Gomez to Colorado trade all but official, it looks like we'll now have a pretty good
measuring stick that we wouldn't have had if Gomez went to the Middle East or back to Argentina.

Sorry I missed this the other day. DC United is still MLS' best - Washington Times Fair enough, the
Supporters Shield the better judge of who was best over the entire season...but MLS recognizes the
MLS Cup winner as Champion so, nice try DC.

The Supporters' Shield returns to DC United for the second year running despite the side limping to
draws in their last two outings. Far be it from me to think Fernando Clavijo capable of doing
anything right in management, but his side did scrape out a dramatic late winner despite going most
of the match a man down to Chivas in the Toolbox, where the Goats never lose.

DC United has successfully defended the MLS Supporter Shield, being the first MLS club to ever do
so. United secured it due to a 2-1 Chivas USA loss today against the Colorado Rapids.
So this means that United have yet again picked up silverware and will be competing in a minimum of
four competitions next season: MLS regular season, USOC, CONCACAF Champions Cup & the North
American SuperLiga.

They're Baa-aack! Not that they ever broke up that much, but the strata are back in a big way in
this week's table, which bears a disturbing resemblance to a core sample. At the bottom, the three
team base is packed into a four-point range, supporting the three battlers for the final playoff
spot in a two-point pickle, the three playoff-bound but pretty much out of the Supporters' Shield
race clubs stuffed into a three point calzone, and DC United as the thin, flaky crust atop a three
team title-contender pie separated by just one point.

And lo - the Bearded Bombardier,
Will punish the legions of Frisco.
And the black-clad midfield,
Will rain goals upon their hoopéd foe.
Witness the triumph of the Crossing Machine!
Arguably the two best midfields in all of MLS met last night in Frisco, but it was the gulf in
defensive quality that turned the tide. Dallas came out strong and despite being rocked by an early
laser from distance by Benny "the Bearded Bombardier" Olsen, they carried the play for the the
majority of the first half.

Keller joins the American Foreign Legion at Craven Cottage. Now I appreciate all that Keller has
done in a US shirt and that he's had a long and accomplished professional career, but I really
think Kasey is a bit past it. Does that mean he can't be a serviceable backup for Fulham - not at
all. I'm guessing that Niemi's injury is worse than previously thought, because I don't see Keller
as displacing him, and despite some recent gaffes, I'm not entirely sure that Keller is an upgrade
over Warner - at least not the Keller we saw at the Copa.
