Friday's scrimmage between the Houston Dynamo and the Los Angeles Galaxy may have been a rematch
of the 2011 MLS Cup, but last November's match was far from the minds of all involved.
The Dynamo defeated the Galaxy 1-0 after Nathan Sturgis scored the lone goal of the match on a
header from a looping cross from Josue Soto in the 68th minute.
Roster flux continues though all under contract players are still with the team, some of the
Supplemental Draft picks and trialists are now in a different phase of their soccer journeys.
Joshua Mayers, of the Seattle Times, compiled the list of missing names. Harlinton Guiterres, Real
Espana reservist, is still in camp.
Amid the controversy surrounding the Jose Moreno fiasco, an interesting piece of news came to
light on Thursday. After he was waived - rather surprisingly - by DC United on February 3rd,
second-year forward Blake Brettschneider tweeted today that he would be joining the New England
Revolution for a trial on Sunday.
The Dynamo continued their undefeated preseason (for what that's worse) with a 2-0 victory over
the Montreal Impact. This was the first MLS competition Houston has faced this preseason and it's
fitting it was against Brian Ching and Le Impact. Colin Clark and Cam Weaver both scored for the
Dynamo.
The Union confirmed on Wednesday through the team's Twitter account that Zac MacMath is joined
in preseason training by Chase Harrison, who had temporarily joined the club late last season when
Faryd Mondragon and Thorne Holder were both out with injuries before the club declined the option
to sign him in November to make him available for the Re-Entry Draft.
Goalkeeper Doug Herrick is no longer training with the club.
I just got confirmation that Timbers Supplemental Draft pick Doug Herrick is no longer training
with the team. It seemed likely given that he was left off of the preseason roster, but this
confirmation makes Joe Bendick the likely candidate to be the Timbers 3rd string keeper behind Troy
Perkins and Jake Gleeson.

What a difference a week makes. The headline for last Tuesday's news roundup? "Saddest day for
me:" Sebastien Le Toux confirmed he had been traded to Vancouver a day after Faryd Mondragon's
return to Colombia was confirmed and WPS announced that it had cancelled the 2012 season.
Easily in the Top 250 MLS English leftback specialty tees - order now!SNIP, SNIPSo confident in the make-up of their first team for 2012, TFC management have taken the unusual
step of pre-announcing oncoming cuts. For Reds supporters this is like being in some kind of
training camp Twilight Zone.
The Philadelphia Union announced that Keon Daniel, along with Danny Mwanga, has joined the team
at its preseason training camp in Florida today.
The 25-year-old has been missing from the Union since a September call up to the Trinidad and
Tobago national team. Daniel left the United States on August 28 or 29, then did not re-enter the
country until possibly today.
While four trialists with European experience joined the New England Revolution in Arizona, five
Americans are joining the Revs in their return to Foxboro. Luke Kreamalmeyer, Blake Wagner, Patrick
Otte, Gabe Mercier, and Brandin McClay are all currently on trial with the team according to the
club's latest preseason roster.
The Dynamo continued their preseason undefeated with another convincing victory over a college
side. Several trialist played well as they try to convince Dominic Kinnear to offer them contracts
for the 2012 season.
Press Release
HOUSTON, TX (Saturday, February 04, 2012) -- The Houston Dynamo defeated Houston Baptist
University 4-0 on a wet Saturday morning at Houston Amateur Sports Park.
The Chicago Fire take on Honduran side Real España in an international preseason friendly at
New Orleans' Tad Gormley Stadium today, Saturday, February 4, at 5:00 p.m. CST. This whole trip has
been in conjunction with the Youth Development Program, the Chicago Fire Juniors - Louisiana.
Earlier today, fans had the chance to meet and greet Fire players at three CFJ-LA campuses: Audubon
Park, City Park and Lions Park.
The 2011 MLS season saw two teams tied for last place across the league, the New England
Revolution and the Vancouver Whitecaps. Because of this, I got to thinking about how the off-season
has been approached by these two clubs and how they compare so far heading into the 2012
season.
To start, both clubs parted ways with their head coaches, although Vancouver did so before the
end of the season, and both hired on new ones.
"Goodbye pal... And yeah, He's cool."
PLAYERS CUT, PUNS TO GO
UNUSEDA sad day for four young men as Toronto FC made their first four cuts of pre-season today. Sadder
still is the effect it will have on blogs as some quality nicknames will forever go stale in
Toronto.

Yesterday I took a look at the 10 clubs from the Eastern Conference in how they've done so far
this winter. Naturally right after the post was put up one of those clubs went out and signed a
DP.
Today, we'll look at the nine clubs from the Western Conference to see how they've been doing so
far this winter.
The international transfer window close a couple days ago. This doesn't mean too much, but it is
a milestone in that MLS teams can no longer actively seek in-contract trades with other teams
outside MLS. Still, the roster freeze date isn't until March 1st so we may yet still see more moves
made, even if it isn't Juan David Duque (Franck Songo'o?

Many clubs are a few weeks into their pre-seasons and now that the international transfer window
has shut, it is a good time to look at how each MLS side has done so far this winter. (Note: the
MLS window doesn't close until April, which means players who failed to land new jobs in Europe can
still head to MLS.
The Chicago Fire had no trouble dispatching Florida Gulf Coast University 3-0 in their second
game of the 2012 preseason. Marco Pappa scored a goal in the 7th minute and assisted on Dominic
Oduro's goal in the 21st minute. Orr Barouch made it 3-0 in the 60th minute of the game on a Corben
Bone corner kick.

The Los Angeles Galaxy enjoyed a banner day on Wednesday, but it was by no means a perfect one.
After signing forward Edson Buddle and acquiring midfielder Kyle Nakazawa in a deal from the
Philadelphia Union, the Galaxy learned that homegrown signing Jose Villarreal will be out for six
weeks.
The Jay Heaps era got off to a winning start as the New England Revolution beat FC Tucson
(Premier Development League) 2-0 in their 2012 preseason opener. Sainey Nyassi and Kenny Mansally
were the Revs goalscorers.
Instead of the traditional two 45-minute periods, the match featured two 35-minute periods
followed by an additional 45-minute period.

After D.C. United and the Chicago Fire had their fair share of defensive struggles throughout
the 2011 MLS campaign, the two teams both had a notable silver lining to take away from their
friendly Sunday: no goals allowed.
It's "Springtime for Winter" as Toronto FC today released the names of the 41 players (so far) who
are taking part in the club's pre-season training camp. The major difference from past years on
first glance is the absence of any professional trialists. Just a year ago, the likes of Javier
Martina, Mikael Yourassowsky and King Osei Gyan (for you TFC trivia buffs) were training with The
Reds in hopes of grabbing a contract but this year seems quite different.
No major news out today, but here are some quick hits news wise for you on your Friday.
Sporting KC vs LA game time changed
Sporting KC's match up with LA on April 7th at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park has changed times and
stations. Yesterday the team announced that the game would now kick off 1 hour earlier at 3pm
Central time.
Sporting KC released the names today of their currently trialists that are in camp as the team
prepares for preseason training out at the Chiefs indoor training facility. There looks to be some
decent talent out there trialing right now, it'll be interesting to see who, if any, travel to
Arizona, and which ones potentially make the team.
The Portland Timbers took to the field for their second practice of 2012 today. At Jeld-Wen it
was rainy and cold and perfect for football. Lucky for those of us in attendance, we were able to
join the players out in the Oregon weather and observe practice.
Drills focused on basic fitness and regaining the touch lost in the soccer-less off season.
Revs Take Four On Trial
Sean Donahue of NE Soccer Today has reported what I tweeted yesterday (probably around the same
time): The Revs have taken four trialists to AZ. Jeremiah White, David Foley, Junior N'Tame, and
Saer Sene are competing for roster spots with the Revs' Supplemental Draft picks.
Four trialists have joined the New England Revolution's preseason camp, according to the
Revolution's latest preseason roster released today. Defender Théophile "Junior" N'Tame,
midfielders Jeremiah White and David Foley, and striker Saër Sène, join the Revs four MLS
Supplemental Draft picks as non-contracted players in camp.
Monty Hall... a proud father"
The boys are back in tow-owu-wow-own!" Oh,
sing it yourself then. It's true though - like well-paid groundhogs in shorts, our beloved Reds are
making their annual late-winter appearance! And guess what? Spring is coming early! (March 7th at
SkyDome - operators are standing by) It's always fun to see old faces return and new faces emerge
(except on defence where we are apparently in tip-top shape) and catch up on all the news and
gossip from a long off-season.
The storm is over, but the need to dig my car out meant I missed session one. If you want a
report on that group you will have to go to the Seattle Times or The News Tribune as they were the
only print media there today. Most notably was the arrival of Supplemental Draft pick Jason Banton.
Banton was still on a London schedule so he did not participate fully.
Another episode of From the Byline to the Back Post is available for your listening. This week Thad
and I discussed the supplemental draft, more player movement, the US national team, and the
Missouri Comets. Enjoy on both Posterous and iTunes.
The MLS 101 series will be a "living/breathing document" in that I
will continue to edit and update these post to keep up to date with the inevitable changes that MLS
will make. I encourage you to bookmark the post so you can use them as a reference going
forward.
In this edition of MLS 101, it's time to tie up some lose ends about MLS roster rules, along
with player movement and acquisition.
Now that the Timbers have a compliment of 30 players total we can sort
of assume that the team is going to settle down a bit and look towards building for their starting
11 in March. I know, I know the hot rumor is that a third DP will be coming soon as a true #9
striker. But even without him we can sort of piece together how the squad will look in this
upcoming season as compared to last year.
Now that preseason has begun for the New England Revolution, it's time to take stock of what the
team has and where it needs to improve. In that vein, I've decided to do a quick "if the season
began tomorrow" examination of the optimal starting XI (and game day 18) on the roster right
now.
I have taken a few liberties.

CHICAGO -- Eclipse Select Soccer Club alum and Clarendon Hills, Ill., native David Tiemstra is
headed to Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes.
Tiemstra, a graduate of Hinsdale Central and a two-time Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the
Year out of Ohio State, was selected by San Jose during Tuesday's 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft.

The majority of D.C. United's offseason roster questions have not fully been answered, and as
the club's preseason got underway with the first day of training on Wednesday, it is clear that
there is plenty to be done before the team takes its final shape.

The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday morning that they have declined the contract
options on Levi Houapeu, Morgan Langley, Ryan Richter and Joe Tait.
The release of Levi Houapeu and Joe Tait frees up two international spots on the Union roster, a
key concern with the recent offseason signings of Gabriel Gomez, Nizar Khalfan, Porfirio Lopez,
and Josué Martinez.

Jack McInerney scored in the US U-23 team's 1–1 draw with the USMNT. McInerney, Amobi Okugo,
and Freddy Adu started the first half. Zac MacMath and Sheanon Williams started the second
half.
John Hackworth says of Tom Brandt, the Union's first pick in the Supplemental Draft, "We wanted
to get a quality player in the back and we feel like we did that with Tom Brandt.
The Houston Dynamo have always seemed to have a love-hate relationship with the MLS SuperDraft.
In the franchise's early years in Houston, Dynamo Coach Dominic Kinnear seemed to have no qualms
about trading away a top draft pick in order to obtain a player who filled a need or role right
away for his squad.

Reports this morning out of Honduras were that two Real Espana players would be on trial with
MLS teams. This evening Goal.com's Spanish language MLS subsite reported those two players are Ever
Alvarado and Gutierrez Harlinton who will be with the Seattle Sounders. Alvarado, as previously
noted, is a young left back who Diez.
