Freedom Kicks - D.C. United, Champions League and MLS links for Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

It's a Wednesday, and I'm on vacation. But I love you, so here are some links to get you over the hump.

Could somebody remind me why I would volunteer to stand in on Freedom Kicks while on vacation with my toddler in the far away land of red hots and deep dish? While I await your answers, onto the links.

The Last Word on D.C. United 3-2 Philadelphia Union: On Alvaro Saborio's Impact on the Team

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we wonder what kind of role Alvaro Saborio may play for the Black and Red, and how it impacted others in his first game.

It was kind of weird to see D.C. United down two goals after four minutes to the Philadelphia Union and wonder just how they would score two, considering it had been a month ago today that they scored their last one.

TLW on D.C. United 0-1 Seattle Sounders: The Frustrating Mr. Fabi

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we look at the active Designated Player and hope he (and those around him) can sally forth without lashing out.

D.C. United was coming to the end of a tortuous run of games, playing their 17th in 62 days (or about one every 3 and a half days) Friday night against a Seattle Sounders team depleted by their own injuries and national team call-ups.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-0 Chicago Fire: Squad Management Is a Thing

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we hopefully tell people to pump the brakes that top players can avoid a start and we can still field a team that does things.

D.C. United came off a win over the New England Revolution in the grueling heat and ahead of a game against a generally surging Toronto FC (?) squad, facing a Chicago Fire squad missing their top players, the challenge for Ben Olsen was to pick a squad that could not be a full bore starting one, but one strong enough to take at least one and hopefully all three points.

The Last Word on D.C. United 2-1 New England Revolution: A Road to Somewhere

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we look at the road ahead while looking just back at the road just left.

D.C. United was trying to find its form in the regular season with something they hadn't had in awhile (a losing streak), though a slightly nervy yet ultimately victorious match in U.S. Open Cup play midweek had to have buoyed them to some degree ahead of an aspiring New England Revolution team.

The Last Word on D.C. United 0-1 Orlando City: When The Pack Starts Creeping

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we hear the footsteps a little bit.

D.C. United played a game with a week's rest for the first time since the end of April in a run where they were playing a variety of squads with a variety of forms. They did their best to hang with an Orlando City squad but ultimately dropped a1-0 heartbreaker, the first back to back losses for the Black and Red in the regular season since August of 2014.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-1 New England Revolution: Getting Water from a Rock

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we wonder what is expected from depth, and what everyone else expects at this point.

Heading into Saturday night's match-up between the first and second place teams in the Eastern Conference, D.C. United was looking to rebound following a subpar effort against the Philadelphia Union, while the New England Revolution wanted to gain ground despite a midweek loss to Sporting Kansas City.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-1 Sporting Kansas City: On Lost (and Possibly Found) Opportunity

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we call on United to be more aggressive against the next few opponents.

D.C. United had back to back efforts where they beat a Conference leader and a presumed heir to the American Coaching Crown, one of which was done on the road 3,000 miles away. As the dates unfurl and the games more frequent, they were facing a Sporting Kansas City team only recently finding some sort of footing.

The Last Word on D.C. United 2-0 Columbus Crew: Tackling A Trope

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we have a minor off topic rant.

D.C. United put together a convincing effort in last week's win over the Vancouver Whitecaps and facing a Columbus Crew SC team who was white hot offensively, there could be some excusing of their performance this week that they could lose. Nevertheless, last week's impressive performance was followed by an equally impressive win over the Crew, and another clean sheet for a team who is back where they belong, not only (tied for) first place but also (tied for) giving up the second fewest goals in Major League Soccer at this point.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-1 Houston Dynamo: Starting From Scratch, To a Degree

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we exercise a bit of caution to the return of the shiny new Designated Player.

The last time D.C. United lost at home we were in the throes of a World Cup. And this season, the whole concept of Fortress RFK was reinforced, but after dropped points last week against the New York Red Bulls, the Black and Red cannot help but feel that another opportunity was wasted.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-0 Los Angeles Galaxy: Finding the Status Quo

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

We attempt to wrap a bow on Saturday's win and wonder if this is the short-term normal.

D.C. United continues to limp along without their offense due to injury and suspension, and in the Los Angeles Galaxy, their opponent was also missing their offense due to international duty, and the play was every bit as one would expect with lineups like these.

The Last Word on D.C. United 1-0 Montreal Impact: Well, That Was A Thing

Black and Red United at related • 1 view

We try to tamp down expectations while wondering if it's possible to go 34-0 before including any CCL or postseason results.

The first kick, first pitch, first installment of whatever your favorite sports may be is a prime opportunity to wonder that jeez, if your favorite team does/doesn't do this type of performance for the rest of the season that it could be a blessing, or an ominous foreboding like whatever snowmageddon may be occurring these days.

The winners of Week 13 are fischy and Steven Streff with a monstrous 38 points each. Don't get too comfortable, though, because there were four other players within 6 points of first place. As a prize, you each get to spend one week with the Philadelphia Union as backup goalkeepers, because a team can never have too many goalkeepers.

The Last Word on D.C. United 2-2 New York Red Bulls: 90ish Minute Mentality

Black and Red United at related • 0 views

In which we try and put a bow on Saturday's game and hope a problem that plagued this team before hasn't come back asking for seconds.

D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls came into their matchup Saturday night with the loser looking up at the winner in first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Black and Red gaffer is on wax for your earholes.

You may have read some of the quotes today or even seen video of Olsen on newscasts (yeah yeah, I know, I know), but here is some context.
