Once upon a time Thailand stood imperious at the biennial SEA Games. They won the trophy eight
years straight, they deemed it their own personal cup and winning was a right.
Not anymore. For the second successive competition the Thais failed to proceed beyond the group
stage. Two years ago in Vientiane the vitriolic Thai media had Steve Darby to blame.
Steve Darby has quit as coach of Indian team Mohun Bagan before the season even begun. Reports
suggest he was unwilling to work while there was a three man committee overlooking his
shoulder.
Everybody watches English football on TV. Everyone wears the replica shirts of the big, successful
clubs yet it seems no one understands what it takes to build a successful football club.
Steve Darby is never out of a job long.
Following his surprise resignation as assistant coach in the Thai national set up at the end of
last month the former Johor, Perak and Home United coach will be taking the reigns at Mohan Bagun
in India.
Mohan Bagun are based in the fascinating city of Kolkota and their fierce rivals are East Bengal
who are coached by another Englishman, Trevor Morgan.
It's not been the best of times for the British contingent in the Thai Premier League. Coach David
Booth was sacked from Si Sa Ket. Peter Butler was sacked from BEC Tero. Bryan Robson and Steve
Darby quit from their posts with the Thai national team. Scotsman Steven Robb went a couple of
months without getting paid.
Les Rosbifs is confirming that Bryan Robson and Steve Darby have quit from their positions as chief
coach and the other guy of the Thai National team.
The announcement comes ahead of Thailand's World Cup qualifying campaign for which there has been
zero preparation...a trend in Thailand over recent years.
Back before I started this 'ere drivel I recall watching Steve Darby being interviewed while he was
still coach of Perak and midway through the natter the stadium's floodlights went out leaving the
coach to natter on in pitch black.
Something similar at Tampines Stadium last week when, during a post match chat being filmed, some
bugger turned the floodlights out.
Australian Memories
One of the rewards I've enjoyed since beginning Jakarta Casual has been the opportunity to run
into familiar names and faces from my time down under following St George in the now defunct
National Soccer League. Steve Darby, Abbas Saad, Darren Stewart, Scott O'Donell, Scott Ollerenshaw,
Les Murray, Francis Awartefe etc were known to me, though I wasn't to them, through the NSL.
I'll never forget the day I heard David Rocastle was leaving the Arsenal. I was driving round the
stadium, Highbury, when I got a flat tyre. Together with a dead helpful security guard I managed to
change the tyre and, as is normal when two or more Gooners are gathered together, we discussed the
Arse.
