Liverpool first-team coach Steve Clarke believes the club has collectively accepted the
consequences of defeat to Bolton and has already moved on from the misery.
Kenny Dalglish's men were last weekend embarrassed in a dire 3-1 loss at the Reebok Stadium and the
manager for the first time turned criticism onto his players.
In the wake of Saturday's match against Stoke, much was made of the draw representing a complete
tactical failure by Kenny Dalglish and Steve Clarke. The key failure in that larger breakdown was
meant to be the deployment of three centre backs in a formation nearly identical to the one which
had defeated Stoke at Anfield a year earlier, as in the eyes of many those three centre backs
represented an overly defensive approach when facing a club with so little attacking intent.

A week after falling 3-0 to Manchester City in the league, a Liverpool side without two of their
top players returned to face a City side missing three of their best for the first leg of the
League Cup semi-finals.
Many Liverpool fans believe that Pepe Reina is currently the best goalkeeper in England, Kenny
Dalglish's assistant Steve Clarke clearly doesn't agree. In an interview on LFC TV last night,
Clarke was previewing today's Carling Cup semi-final first leg, and he inadvertently admitted that
he believes Reina is behind City keeper Joe Hart in the overall quality stakes.

Guardian: Martin Skrtel thrives after finally being accepted at Anfield
The Slovakian centre-back says the input of Kenny Dalglish and Steve Clarke has helped him win
over the Liverpool fans The demands of a young family have reduced Martin Skrtel's interaction with
the Liverpool public yet he remains acutely aware of how they perceive him.
Kenny Dalglish today praised the team behind the team as he prepares to celebrate a year since his
memorable return to Melwood.
Our most famous No.7 was invited back into the dugout 12 months ago this weekend following the
departure of Roy Hodgson from Anfield.
Since then he has transformed the fortunes of the team on the field by bringing unity back to the
club where he scored 172 goals in 515 games as a player.
There was hope. Hope in Dalglish's return. Hope in Suarez' arrival. Hope in the introduction of
a more pleasing brand of football. And then, in a moment, it seemed to have all been ripped
away.
People talked about the club being bigger than any one player, and they rationalised that things
would be alright given that that particular player hadn't really made much of a contribution
to any kind of success over the previous eighteen months.

Liverpool earned a valuable away win against Aston Villa with two early strikes by Craig Bellamy on
10 mins and a Martin Skrtel header five minutes later.
Villa were there for the taking, however Liverpool failed to press home their advantage.True, Luis
Suarez had two great shots hit the woodwork but mostly the reds played a subdued brand of football,
unsure of whether to go all-out for the jugular and hammer home their advantage or to keep things
tight and keep a clean sheet away from home.
It can't just be about playing with Daniel Agger, as in recent weeks he has seemed to outshine
even his highly regarded Danish teammate, though perhaps that the partnership allows him to now
consistently play on his favoured right side could be part of it.
It isn't entirely a surprise, either, as in his early days at Liverpool he was for many the man
who would replace Jamie Carragher; a confident, physical defender set to anchor the defence for
years to come.

It doesn't happen often, but when Pepe Reina makes a mistake, it usually ends in an opposition
goal, and his howler at Craven Cottage on Monday night unfortunately handed Fulham victory, and
ended Liverpool's 11 game unbeaten run. Liverpool now have to pick themselves up, and according to
Assistant Manager Steve Clarke, Reina's confidence won't be affected.
'We're ready for City challenge'
Steve Clarke acknowledges Liverpool will need to be at their best if they are to beat Manchester
City on Sunday but insists the players have been preparing hard at Melwood all week to ensure

In the wake of an encouraging win it would be easy to simply focus on the positives like normal,
happy people who know how to enjoy success. But what those happy people who know how to enjoy
success don't know is that failure and pain is lurking just around every corner, waiting to spring.
So really, you're much better off embracing a more negative outlook that asks, "Why hasn't Jose
Enrique been called up for Spain yet, and does it mean there's something wrong with him we don't
know?
Liverpool first-team coach Steve Clarke has hailed the professionalism of Chelsea goalscoring hero
Maxi Rodriguez.

Clarke: No Surprise at Maxi Impact
Liverpool assistant manager Steve Clarke believes Maxi Rodriguez' fine display against Chelsea
on Sunday came as no surprise to those who have watched the player in training. Having been ousted
from the squad by some of Kenny Dalglish's summer signings, Maxi has worked hard to force his way
back into the manager's thinking, and Clarke believes the Argentine deserves all the praise he gets
for managing to do so.

On Sunday, Martin Skrtel won 100% of his challenges on the ground, 100% of his challenges in the
air, 100% of his tackles, added a pair of interceptions, and managed to be one of the very few
players nobody seemed to think was to blame for Chelsea's goal. John Terry and Frank Lampard won
all their aerial challenges; Craig Bellamy and Didier Drogba won all their attempted tackles in
attack; and Florent Malouda won all his aerials and tackles.

Liverpool and Chelsea meet tomorrow in one of the more hotly-contested matchups of the past few
years in English football, with both clubs on the front end of particularly important stretches of
their respective seasons. Action off the pitch has added more spice to the fixture in the past
calendar year, and the matches themselves have been fairly even Liverpool's done the double in
league twice of the last three years, with Chelsea splitting it up and winning both matches two
seasons ago.
Martin Kelly has all the attributes to play at centre-back in the future, according to first-team
coach Steve Clarke.
The Reds have no plans to move the 21-year-old from the right side of defence, where his
performances have helped him become an England U21 regular.
However, Clarke would not be surprised if Kelly one day returned to the central position he
regularly played during his years at the Academy.
Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates underwent a baptism of fire at Liverpool when he was
unexpectedly thrown into action during the 4-0 horror show at Tottenham a couple of months ago.
Fans have seen glimpses of the player in action since, but what does Liverpool Assistant Manager
Steve Clarke make of him so far?

In our last poll, we asked if it was important for Liverpool to include at least one traditional
winger in its Plan A, first choice starting eleven. It could mean continuing with Stewart Downing,
or it could mean searching for another option in future transfer windows, and it wouldn't preclude
alternate approaches based on opponent and form, but on the whole readers overwhelmingly felt that
having a traditional winger as part of the club's preferred approach was important to the tune of
66.
Carragher Completes Comeback
Liverpool's Jamie Carragher has completed his return from injury and is back in contention to
face Chelsea on Sunday. The veteran stopper could go straight back into the side, despite the
Skrtel / Agger partnership keeping two clean sheets in a row in his absence.

**This weekend's guest post comes to us from Paul, who's been posting as PDubz18 for awhile

yourselves for poppy poppy poppy. Also, annihilation.), he discusses the system Liverpool's used so
far, and how the personnel fit into the general approach utilized by Kenny Dalglish and his
staff.
Kevin Keen is relishing his role as Liverpool first-team coach, and explained why he felt a tinge
of nerves when coming face-to-face with Kenny Dalglish for the very first time.
The Reds boss' illustrious reputation in world football left the former West Ham United man - who
has been working at Anfield for four months now - feeling a little apprehensive, but Keen reveals
how he was pleasantly surprised after their initial Melwood meeting.
