Well, watching D.C. United keep its 2017 goals account closed for the time being with a 2-0 loss against Columbus Crew SC was hardly fun by any means, but in attempting to look deeper there may be some other causes of concern.
First and foremost is Bill Hamid's early game save.
270 scoreless minutes means the Black-and-Red have just one point after three games
Referee Ted Unkel might not have won over many fans from D.C. United on Saturday night, but it was the Black-and-Red's own ineptitude in front of goal that has kept United winless to start the 2017 season. The latest set back was a 2-0 defeat at home to Columbus Crew SC, as center back Steve Birnbaum conceded two penalties, one on each side of the half.

D.C. United's winless, and scoreless streak to start the 2017 season continued on Saturday night, as United lost 2-0 to Columbus Crew SC at RFK Stadium. Gonzalo Higuain and Ola Kamara provided the goals for the Crew, both coming from the penalty spot.
Mullins inked an extension in February after spending 3 years at 3 different clubs
Patrick Mullins had trouble finding a permanent home to start his MLS career. The two-time M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner at the University of Maryland, an award given to the best collegiate player in the country, figured to be a high pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.
A big change in the NWSL, Mix Diskerud, and a story about selling pants are all included
We've had four CCL games as the appetizer, but tonight the MLS season really gets started. The Portland Timbers host Minnesota United on Fox Sports 1. Finally, I can stop chipping away at my DVR backlog of shows and movies and get back to forgoing all popular culture in favor of soccer, soccer, and more soccer.
Monday marked the center back's first 2017 practice with United
After spending nearly a month with the US national team for their annual January camp, playing all 90 minutes in friendlies against Serbia and Jamaica, center back Steve Birnbaum was out on the practice field with D.C. United on Monday.
D.C. United announced today that they have re-signed starting center back and 2016 MVP Steve Birnbaum to a multi-year contract, rumored to be four years. As we said earlier this week, retaining Birnbaum was an absolutely part of the team's offseason plans, with Bobby Boswell getting older and Kofi Opare and Jalen Robinson battling for the third spot.
ESPN's Marc Stein says United will retain their USMNT defender for quite a while
Coming into the offseason, most D.C. United fans were concerned with the club's ability to secure a permanent transfer for Luciano Acosta. However, signing a long-term contract with USMNT defender Steve Birnbaum - the subject of repeated European interest in the past few months - was not far behind.
Birnbaum rounds out an excellent year for him with a USMNT call-up for the start of the Hex
Jurgen Klinsmann announced on U.S. Soccer's Facebook page that D.C. United defender Steve Birnbaum is on the United States roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The USMNT will host Mexico on Friday in Columbus, then go on the road to play Costa Rica Tuesday at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica.
We review the year of the young center back who has made the leap to a mainstay on the USMNT.
2016 started out great for D.C. United center back Steve Birnbaum. It began in rainy, cold Southern California wearing the red, white and blue as he was the savior for the United States Men's National Team in their 3-2 January victory against Iceland.

The Filibuster podcast, just like D.C. United, is on a rocket ride of success as we blast into the playoffs! We open with United's 3-1 win over New York City FC, and ponder whether or not the first half was the best 45 minutes of the year for the team.

D.C. United's star defender took a kick to the head against Cuba today
D.C. United defender Steve Birnbaum came on at halftime of today's United States friendly with Cuba for John Brooks and was having a good second half, or at least as much as one could expect against the 139th ranked team in the FIFA rankings.
D.C. United was going up to Canada to play a Toronto FC side that had been looking not as good as they normally would (thanks to the absence of Sebastian Giovinco), but still among the East leaders. Dressing an A-minus/B-plus side that was definitely leggy from the work they'd put in over the last two and a half weeks, their 2-1 win may have been as impressive as the ones which have given them all this goalscoring over the last two months.
An amazing late show gives United the Atlantic Cup
D.C. United looked down and out, as the New York Red Bulls held a deserved 2-0 lead late in the game. Luis Robles had barely been tested, and it looked for all the world like the Black-and-Red were in danger of falling further behind in the playoff race.
The attempt to get Birnbaum out of Black-and-Red hands continues.

The USMNT's winter camp wraps up tonight against CONCACAF opposition
The US men's national team concludes their January (and, I suppose, February) camp tonight in Tennessee, facing Jamaica. It's probably no mistake that the USMNT is lining up a CONCACAF foe, what with crucial World Cup qualifiers looming on the horizon.
Bruce Arena's second tenure as US head coach starts with a scrappy draw
Despite owning over 61% of possession and connecting a healthy share of their passes, the United States could not break down Serbia, with the two sides settling for a 0-0 draw in San Diego today. The USMNT, with Bruce Arena back at the helm for the first time since 2006, had their moments but ultimately struggled in the final third.
Bruce Arena's return to the USMNT started a couple of weeks ago, with a 30-man roster called in for the traditional January camp. That group has been cut down to 23 for two friendlies (today against Serbia, and Friday against Jamaica). With the United States sitting in an extremely perilous spot in World Cup qualifying, getting this almost entirely domestic-based squad up and running is vital; many of these players will be called in for the crucial qualifiers against Honduras and Panama in late March.
Bruce Arena wants to see what three of United's best players can do
Bruce Arena announced the roster for the US Men's national team's January camp, commonly known as Camp Cupcake. As expected, there are two D.C. United players on this roster: goalkeeper Bill Hamid and center back Steve Birnbaum.

Birdbomb among 23 players called in to face Cuba and New Zealand

EA Sports releases FIFA 17 on Tuesday, September 27th, and the FIFA Ultimate Team player database is now available, showing ratings for every player in the game. It should come as no surprise that players like Sebastian Giovinco, David Villa, and Andrea Pirlo are the highest rated MLS players, but how do DCU's players rate?
