The following list of elite midfield players in the world will exclude the likes of Lionel
Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka since they sometimes play as forwards or as support strikers
depending on the strategy deployed by their team. Kaka has previously played as a second striker
during his spell with Milan while both Messi and Ronaldo have played in various attacking positions
for their club (mostly on the wing though).

The U.S. national team returns to action for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 World
Cup today when it takes on Slovakia in a friendly in Bratislava (10am, FSC).
The Americans are without Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, as well as the injured Oguchi Onyewu
and Jay DeMerit, but there are still plenty of starters who will have chances to show they can play
without the team's top players.

Portugal get set for their first leg against Bosnia Saturday as they look to qualify for World Cup
2010. The Portuguese team has a few injuries and the lineup will be a bit different then we have
been accustomed too during this qualify campaign. Ronaldo, Bosingwa and Pedro Mendes are all out.
Carlos Quieroz will look to have the right starting lineup as the host Bosnia at the Estadio da
Luz.

The U.S. men's national team takes on Slovakia on Saturday and the match is one of the last
remaining opportunities this year for head coach Bob Bradley to take a look at different players
and positional pairings before the end of the year.
With standouts Landon Donovan and Tim Howard not called in, and with key injuries to Oguchi
Onyewu and Jay Demerit, the squad Bradley will turn to to face the Slovakians will be a much
different-looking group than the ones that helped the team qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

The head coaches of Costa Rica and Uruguay are very close to deciding on a starting lineup for
Saturday's first leg of the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff. Simões and Tabárez are going to play
things close to their vests, with closed training sessions. But barring suspension or injury, both
teams are going to go with the same XI that were on the field in the previous two or three
qualifiers.

Unfortunately for the Fire though, it doesn't appear as if all of their banged-up players will
be available on Saturday night at Toyota Park.

So now that the passion/disappointment has simmered a bit after a below mediocre season, I
figured I's sit and look at the team as a whole and write about what I thought should happen for

Peter Vermes = Technical Director: After 3 seasons in this position I
feel Vermes has done a less than stellar job.

In a match that featured intense physical play, defensive dominance and a near-brawl, the
Seattle Sounders drew 0-0 with the Houston Dynamo on Thursday night at Qwest Field. Seattle
defender Patrick Ianni, a last-minute replacement in the starting lineup, came closest to scoring
by hitting the crossbar, but the home side also needed a few clutch saves by Kasey

Arsene will spend his 60th birthday today at the club's Annual General Meeting with the
shareholders, and, unlike last season, a much more cordial atmosphere is to be expected.
I watched the AGM last year and I have to say that the reports in the press made it seem as

prod him but eventually let him go.
