Throughout history the number 13 has been associated with misfortune, not only
were there thirteen people present at the last supper there were also thirteen contestants in the
first series of UK Big Brother. The connection between the number and bad luck has found its way
into football in the past.
Disturbingly high squad numbers have been part of top level football for a few years now and
squad numbers as high as 99 are seen around Europe. The Premier League isn't immune from such
abominations with numbers in the 40s regularly sighted in stadiums throughout the UK. With this in
mind I thought I'd take a look at the biggest culprits from Europe's "Top Five Leagues": Serie A,
La Liga, Premier League, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga.
I just bought an A4 print of a 1992-1994 Manchester United home kit Subbuteo player. I'm not a
massive fan of Subbuteo, but there's something about the aesthetic of it all that pleases me on a
very base level. So much so that having ordered the print I had to stop myself from going to Ebay
and buying numerous teams decked out in classic United kits.

For nearly 150 years, eleven men have been stepping onto a soccer field prepared to attack and
defend against their opponent as a unit.
It happens every day all across the world. How often do we think of the significance of the
number, 11?
The friendly that the United States played against Mexico in Philadelphia on August 10brought
back a historical tradition.
Following on from the piece on nationalities in European competition I thought I'd take a look
at the squad numbers used during the opening week of European football (Europa League and Champions
League). There were forty games across Europe last week so it gives us a decent data set to look at
which numbers are popular in Europe, and which are not so popular.

31 players have been allocated squad numbers for Newcastle United's 2011/2012 season. As we haven't
posted it here yet, I thought I'd list the squad numbers for the 2011/2012 season. 31 players have
so far been allocated a number but there are three gaps for numbers 3, 9 and 12 (and obviously an
infinite number [.
Man, it feels good to type such a headline once again. Football is back and there is something
to look forward to even if it isn't with the greatest of optimism.
I haven't done the season preview yet because a lot is bound to happen between now and the end
of the season. I want to wait for the transfer window to close and see a couple of games,
especially of Chelsea and Liverpool, before making any predictions.
New first team squad numbers are out.
The curse of the 'proper' numbers continues, as John Arne Riise vacates the number seven shirt
recently not worn by Seol, Andranik, and... who had it last year (ed. Sidwell)? In any case, such
a prestigious number needs an equally prestigious owner, and Fulham simply haven't come up with
one.

While Spurs have been linked with a whole host of players in this transfer window so far, Harry
Redknapp has suggested all the rumours are irrelevant as the club will have to sell before it can
buy.
While some Spurs supporters may have been waiting for an injection of cash to get Tottenham
challenging for Champions League football once again, Harry has indicated that there will be no
movement until several players are
sold.
I was reading this article this morning by Alan Hansen in the Telegraph and straight away like the
rest of you became defensive as the majority of you would do. I will be posting about the rest of
the article later but it's this point I am looking at and wanting to blog about this morning. I am
trying to decide if he is talking rubbish or if he has a point.
