Injury problems. Shoddy defending. Indifferent form. His burgeoning interests off field. Rio
Ferdinand's season has been on the wane.
It was on display against Ukraine and since then it has gotten worse. A struggling Rio futilely
pulling on Fernando Torres jersey in the Liverpool match as the Spanish striker blasts the ball
past Van Der Saar.

Come in number 11 Marseille youngster Hatem Ben Arfa had a nasty wardrobe malfunction at the
weekend. Preparing to come on as a substitute, Ben Arfa stripped off his tracksuit to reveal that
he was masquerading as team-mate Mamadou 'Pixie Lott' Niang. Cue much hilarity and a quick sprint
for the kitman to reunite Ben Arfa with [.

Sick of those damn strikers getting all the glory? Make like Chacarita defender Mariano

"I had come from Man United with the slippers, dressing gowns and heated floors. All of a sudden I

they leave a mess like dogs, believe me."

Well the first serious blow to Real Madrid came, frustratingly, in a World Cup Qualifier over
last weekend. And I'm sure by now you have heard that Cristiano Ronaldo will be out for some
significant time thanks to Portugal using the injured player due to their desperate position
regarding a World Cup birth.

We may be only eight games into the new
Premier League season but after Chelsea's 2-0 win

Chelsea boss

Chelsea's to lose.

Well, last night was a whole lot more fun than Saturday wasn't it? Until about the 60th minute
when that old familiar feeling started to creep in and no matter how hard you fought it, the
thought 'this has 1-0 Olympiakos written all over it' started battering around your head. Well, it
did in mine at least.

Cristiano Ronaldo entered the Real Madrid record books last night, becoming the first player to
score a goal in each of the four opening fixtures in La Liga, and what a goal it was. In just the
2nd minute of the game, Ronaldo received the ball on the half way line, his first touch being a
flick to cut inside, and then he proceeded to sprint down the pitch, evading the tackles from 2 or
3 Villarreal defenders, before shooting low and hard into the corner of the net from just outside
the 18 yard box.

The bad thing about having a "real job" is that I don't blog about the beautiful game as much as
I'd like. There is a silver lining though, I get to ignore lots of topics that are only marginally
interesting to me and rather focus on some more interesting theories.
I decided to sit down for a few minutes and think about an article that for blogger standards is
ancient (August 26) but that struck a chord for me.

And it had all begun quite encouragingly. Sitting back away from home and soaking up the
pressure just isn't the Tottenham way, so right from the off we took the game to that lot, giving
as good as we got in the first half. Jenas, Hudd and Palacios weren't far off with their long-range
efforts, and there was a gorgeous through-ball from Sergeant Wilson to free up Defoe in the early
stages.

The actions of a remorseful man Emmanuel Adebayor was apologetic personified after his crazed
sprint to celebrate his goal for Manchester City in front of Arsenal's supporters. But he is not
going to let the terrible guilt he feels deep down inside get in the way of a bit of training
ground banter. Having found the net [.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the big man's celebration was his willingness to sprint the
length of the field. No Arsenal supporter had ever seen him track back to his own half and yet,
here he was, giving it the Hulk Hogans to a cacophony of boos and flying burgers. It would appear
shock caused the collective dropping of instruments to hand, as one unfortunate City steward was
knocked unconscious.

technicality though, because I am speaking about the "Technical Area.

This is a marathon not a sprint.
After witnessing Rafa Benitez's Liverpool side conducting a rather frightening opening day

I know it was only the first game of the season. I know it's a marathon not a sprint. I know we
have to show consistency. I know all this but by fuck I am going to gloat, yes I am. Not for 10
years have we scored 6 in a league game (away I think), not for many-a-year have we entered a
league season with so much uncertainty hanging over a team Wenger has had unwavering belief in.

Yura Movsisyan left tonight's Chicago game with a rotator cuff injury, and although Real played
tough defense against the Fire for 75 minutes, one defensive lapse and a Chicago goal was all it
took for the Fire to earn full point and Real to go home with nothing. Chicago has played well
defensively of late, and a good defense means you don't have to put a lot of points on the board to
win.

then turned and ran backwards to the sideline.

I've just watched the England under-21's vs Germany under-21's final and I have to be honest;
England were smashed more than a plate at a Greek restaurant.
It was embarrassing at times and it just confirms to me what I've always believed. England, at all
levels, aren't as good as most of us English people think we are.

How often, then, do cup winners get lucky? Ahead of tomorrow night's European Cup final in Rome
it's a question worth asking ourselves, because there is a tendency, in cup finals, for those

different to league seasons.
