A day after hearing that defender Matt Besler and midfielder Graham Zusi would be joining the U.S. Men's National Team, Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes found out he'd be without two additional players for a three week stretch in the middle of the season.
Well, almost a QPR kit "Ah, breaker one-nine, this here's the Rubber Duck. You gotta copy on me, Pig Pen, c'mon?" Pretty sure this is how the conversation went down between Kevin Payne and Sporting KC's front office as TFC's President traded for MLS veteran Bobby Convey earlier today.
Toronto FC GM Kevin Payne still isn't finished improving his squad.
Just days after signing two new players, Payne engineered a move to acquire winger Bobby Convey from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for a 2014 natural third round (first round supplemental draft) MLS SuperDraft selection.
Sporting Kansas City traded forward Bobby Convey to Toronto FCon Thursdayin exchange for Toronto FC's natural third round pick in next year's MLS SuperDraft (in other words the first pick from Toronto in the Supplemental Draft).
Yep. Convey re-joins Kevin Payne and former teammate (now head coach) Ryan Nelsen.
The 16 American-based Major League Soccer teams learned their potential opponents when they all kick off U.S. Open Cup action in the third round of the competition, which is celebrating its 100th year.
The first round of the tournament began on Tuesday, and U.
The Portland Timbers and FC Dallas have emerged as the class of the Western Conference and it could be some time before teams catch them at the top of the West standings.
Both Dallas and the Timbers are riding nine-match unbeaten streaks, with their 1-1 draw last Wednesday providing a glimpse of what could be the battle for the top spot in the West all season long.
Happy Tuesday, ladies and gentlemen. We play Sporting Kansas City this weekend, if you didn't know. So I'm sure we're totally about to turn this thing around. This game is a gimme. We got this.

Confidence key in unlocking winger's potential! That's it, guys.
In a match marked by physical play all night long, it shouldn't be a surprise that arguably the league's most physical defender scored the game-winning goal.
Aurelien Collin overcame an early yellow card to play the entire match and score the game winner in the second half, as Sporting Kansas City downed the Houston Dynamo, 1-0, on Sunday night at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Week 11 continues apace after the biggest slate of midweek matches so far this season. It all starts with the Chicago Fire playing host to the Philadelphia Union at 1:30 on NBC Sports Network. The weekend will wrap up Sunday night at 8:00, when you should absolutely take advantage of this weekend's free trial of MLS Live to watch the two-time defending Eastern Conference playoff champion Houston Dynamo host the two-time defending Eastern Conference regular season champion Sporting Kansas City.
For all the success Sporting Kansas City have had over the past two years, the Houston Dynamo have been the one riddle the club can't solve.
After being ousted come playoff time by Houston two seasons in a row, Kansas City will travel to BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday and attempt to get a result against a Dynamo side that, in addition to riding a 36-game home unbeaten streak, just wrapped a 2-0 road trip.
Dynamo forward Will Bruin continued his mastery of D.C. United, turning the rematch of the 2012 Eastern Conference final into a laugher Wednesday night at RFK Stadium.
Bruin scored a pair of goals and provided two assists in a 4-0 victory, keeping the Dynamo (6-2-2, 20 points) atop the Eastern Conference standings.
For the crowded top of the Eastern Conference table, which features a four-way tie for first, a packed slate of midweek games should provide some of clarity to the muddled race.
All four first-place teams are in action Wednesday night, with two of them — the New York Red Bulls and Montreal Impact — going head to head.
Toronto FC made a big splash this offseason by signing Ryan Nelsen to be their new manager, but things on the field haven't exactly gone to plan.
Looking to close all the holes in a leaky defense, Nelsen has dipped into England again, signing Birmingham City defender Steven Caldwell on-loan through June 30, when his contract will expire.
Luke Lohr and Pedro Gomes are back to talk about the weekend action for MLS. Referee decisions are the heavy talking point, as is the rise of Sporting KC. NASL graced us with three draws, but some great individual plays and USL PRO gives us goals. Off The Bench, because it's the right price.

Week 10 in Major League Soccer proved to be a tough week to figure out who would be the top player. But after Sunday's 4-0 smashing of Chivas USA by Sporting KC, one player managed to stand out for 10 of the 27 voters, including myself.
Graham Zusi took home the Player of the Week award for Week 10.
Sporting Kansas City was in a brief slump, having lost two straight games, but they returned to their top form on Saturday in a 4-0 thumping of Chivas USA. A performance orchestrated by the skillful exploits of Graham Zusi.
It doesn't get much more daunting than this: The first thing Patrick McLain (Eau Claire Memorial) had to do in his Major League Soccer debut was face a penalty kick.
McLain – subbed in after Chivas USA starting goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was sent off for a foul in the box in the 54th minute of Sunday's match at Sporting Kansas City – stepped to his line and did some jumps, presmuably both to get loose and to try to distract Sporting striker Claudio Bieler, who was standing over the ball at the spot 12 yards away.
After suffering a rare home defeat in week nine of Major League Soccer action, Graham Zusi and Sporting Kansas City were determined to remind the league that they are still the team to beat.
Attacking from the opening minute, the U.S. international Zusi had his best games of the season, assisting on a goal and scoring one himself as Sporting Kansas City pummeled ten-man Chivas USA, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Sporting Park.
Norwich City had until Monday to decide whether they wanted to sign on-loan forward Kei Kamara on a permanent basis.
They didn't even make it past Saturday night.
Following a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, where Kamara played the final 18 minutes of the match, Norwich announced that they had agreed to let Kamara's loan deal end, returning the Sierra Leone international to Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer with immediate effect.
And there it is. Jurgen Klinsmann going wide and expansive with his camp roster next week. The roster dominated by the return of golden boy Stu Holden and no place for Steve Cherundolo (or Carlos Bocanegra).
GOALKEEPERS (6) : Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.
Coming into last Sunday and the start of Sporting KC's 3 games in 8 days streak, I figured that taking 6 out of 9 points from the 3 games would have been acceptable. You had home games against the struggling Chivas and Seattle and a trip to Houston where the Dynamo are unbeaten in 36 games. The Chivas game went to plan with a 4-0 win.
Join the podcast crew as we explore the depths of our misery as D.C. United fans in 2013. We start off by looking at Ben Olsen's lineup and tactical changes in the midst of a combined 6-1 beatdown on D.C. United over two legs by the state of Texas. In the harsh light of United's performances against the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas, we also ask ourselves at what point focus will shift from this long slog of a season to building for 2013.
The letting the kids play experiment worked as well as anything else has this year, and so I expect that Ben Olsen will stay with at least parts of that starting 11 when D.C. United takes on Sporting Kansas City this Sunday. But, for the second week in a row, the key question is about Chris Pontius' groin.
Sporting KC return to action again tomorrow against the Houston Dynamo. It'll be the 3rd game in just over a week for both teams. The two teams though have looked quite different over the past week. While Houston has looked quite good, taking 6 points on the road against LA and an admittedly poor DC United, KC took 3 points from two home games against Chivas USA and Seattle.
Happy Monday, ladies and gentlemen. Anyone who tells me that I have a case of the Mondays will be slapped today. D.C. United didn't play this weekend, which usually stinks. This weekend, it was a welcome relief. Hopefully Wednesday brings better than awful soccer.
For the fourth time since 2010, Sporting Kansas City has given up a late goal that has cost them a result of some kind against the Seattle Sounders. A goal in the 94th minute by Djimi Traore gave the Sounders a 1-0 win at Sporting Park, keeping Seattle unbeaten in Kansas City since the Sounders came into the league.
MLS' disciplinary committee came out today with suspensions and fines from this past weekend's game ahead of tomorrow's slate of games. Unfortunately for Sporting KC, they'll be without Paulo Nagamura now for tomorrow's game against the Seattle Sounders. Nagamura was retroactively suspended for stepping on Edgar Mejia's fingers in the 52nd minute of Sporting's 4-0 win on Sunday.
The MLS Players Union today released salary figures for the players for the 2013 season today. As always there are plenty of quesitons regarding the salaries. The biggest one on this year's is the salary of Claudio Bieler's salary. The players union site lists the designated player as having a base of $200,000.
Sporting Kansas City defeated Chivas USA 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd at Sporting Park.
Claudio Bieler opened the scoring in the 41st minute with Graham Zusi claiming the assist.Bieler doubled Sporting KC's lead in the 57th minute after converting a penalty kick drawn by Paulo Nagamura.
Sporting KC cruised to victory on Sunday afternoon at Sporting Park against Chivas USA thanks in part to a red card to Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy in the second half. In the first half, Kansas City controlled possession and created quite a few chances that they couldn't finish. In the 18th, Graham Zusi received a cross field ball in the corner, settled it and fired a drive into the middle of the box that just missed a sliding Jacob Peterson that would have made it 1-0.
Sporting Kansas City is back at it tomorrow against the Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park in a rematch of last year's US Open Cup final. Both teams are coming into the game on short rest, Sporting at least will have not had to travel, although they'll have one less day of rest. Seattle played in Philadelphia on Saturday earning a 2-2 draw while Kansas City took care of Chivas USA 4-0.
Sporting Kansas City welcomes Chivas USA to Sporting Park tomorrow for the second of three straight home games. Coming off the back of back to back loses to the LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers, Sporting KC will be looking to right the ship and get back on a winning track.
Really for Chivas this year the story coming in had been the team's focus on returning to their roots and focusing on Mexican and Mexican American talent for the team.
Jurgen Klinsmann today announced his camp roster ahead of a 5 game stretch for the US Men's national team that includes 3 World Cup qualifiers. Sporting KC will be represented in camp by two players, defender Matt Besler and midfielder/forward Graham Zusi. The camp kicks off on Sunday the 26th, but both Besler and Zusi will be a day late.
US Soccer today announced the potential draw for the 3rd round of this year's US Open Cup. The third round is when all 16 US based MLS teams enter the competition. The defending US Open Cup champions, Sporting Kansas City learned who their potential opponents could be today. Sporting KC's draw will see them playing at Sporting Park in the 3rd round this year and will be playing a regional team after winning a coin flip with the Chicago Fire.
