Hull City vs. West Ham United: A Crucial Six-Pointer But Diamanti Is Injured!

The Flat Back Four 20 November @ 02:11 PM EST
West Ham United travels to Hull City this Saturday and will be looking to put the miserable Everton match behind them. We have to start winning and stay in control of our Premiership destiny. We need to set off on a winning run. At the moment, West Ham cannot put together a win streak that our play at times deserves. Click to continue reading...

Video: Three breakdowns, three goals to Denmark

Soccerblog 19 November @ 10:20 PM EST

Amidst all the drama with the Ireland vs France match and earlier the Egypt vs Algeria showdown, the USA played a friendly with Denmark. Bob Bradley started Jeff Cunningham and I am happy to say, it turned out well because he scored his first international goal and nearly set up Altidore with another.

Recap [USA vs. Denmark, 11.18.09]

Project 2010 19 November @ 02:34 PM EST

The less said about this match, the better. It was painful to watch at moments. I think that this is one of those matches that we're supposed to learn from. So, what did we learn?

-Landon Donovan is even more integral to this team than we could have imagined. We knew he was the driving force, but the team looks completely lost without him.

Danish challenge with little meaning

Covering the Pitch 18 November @ 10:40 AM EST

Take your pick: a meaningless friendly on European soil, or fighting for a World Cup spot today. As far as that goes, American soccer fans can't complain about their situation. Thanks to some gutsy results in the final two games of the tournament, they aren't in Montevideo, with a tough Uruguay squad looking to deal a knockout blow.

Who should the USA start vs. Denmark?

If the starting lineup the U.S. team fielded in Saturday's loss to Slovakia didn't look far enough away from Bob Bradley's first-choice squad, wait until you see the team we are likely to have take the field in Denmark on Wednesday.

USA vs. Slovakia (Matchday Commentary)

Soccer By Ives 14 November @ 11:29 AM EST

The U.S. national team returns to action for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 World Cup today when it takes on Slovakia in a friendly in Bratislava (10am, FSC).

The Americans are without Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, as well as the injured Oguchi Onyewu and Jay DeMerit, but there are still plenty of starters who will have chances to show they can play without the team's top players.

US Soccer’s Seven Deadly Sins: Envy

Soccer Tickets Online 12 November @ 07:00 AM EST

The Sin: Envy has always been associated with the color green, probably in a large part thanks to the Bard's classic Othello. In that play, the jealousy that accompanies envy is referred to as "the green-eyed monster". Proverbs 23:17 also warns against it, stating that one should "Let not thine heart envy sinners, but be thou in the fear of the Lord.

Hammers fans who watched the riveting match against Arsenal voted in their player performances as such:

Extremely good result for Zola and the boys, especially as I wrote previously in my preview that that victory would be a near impossible task. Click to continue reading...

Which Team is Better – 2002 or 2009?

Major League Soccer Talk 16 September @ 10:19 AM EST

There has been some talk lately about how the USMNT has regressed from its best teams of the past decade – that a lack of veteran leadership has made this team shakier and that Bob Bradley is making do with a hand full of poor cards. I don't believe that to be the case. The current US team has as much potential as the 2002 World Cup quarterfinalists, and if they can catch some of the same breaks as that 2002 team, they can go just as far if not farther.

US Men v. Trinidad and Tobago: The glass is half . . .

Soccer Soap Box 09 September @ 11:52 PM EST

It's hard to feel bad about winning three points on the road in CONCACAF, since that seems to be a rarity nowadays.  Yet, it's hard to feel totally good about this result either. Â

It is another perfect example of the half-full, half-empty conundrum. Â

I said after the El Salvador game that this match would tell us a lot about the team .

USMNT notes

The Beautiful Game (2) 08 September @ 05:00 AM EST
Edgar Castillo (the answer to our prayers at left back?) has been cleared to play for the national team. Too bad we have to wait another month to see him.
In other news on defense, Jay DeMerit has been left off the squad for Wednesday's qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago.
I'm thinking/hoping the USMNT backline could look something like:
Spector---Bocanegra---Onyewu---Cherundolo

The STO Commish Critiques: U.S. Players Playing Elsewhere

About a month back the STO Commish heard some interesting news. U.S. forward Kenny Cooper signed with German club 1860 Munich. Cooper's signing with the club came a few months after starting U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu signed with Serie A squad AC Milan. And just a few weeks back Jozy Altidore was transferred to Premier League club, Hull City.

US MNT thoughts

Footie in the USA 28 August @ 08:24 PM EST
After what was a very successful summer, the MNT is back for two important WCQ. I wanted to talk about the starting XI I would like to see for the qualifiers. It features Tim Howard in goal, a standout for Everton and the USMNT alike for some time now. Howard is a legend, and has to be one of the top 5 keepers in the world, his selection is a no-doubter. Injuries and Suspensions

Fantasy EPL 21 August @ 09:38 AM EST
One in, one out.
Not much new news this morning, the latest being the casualties from yesterday's Europa League matches. Those claimed Andy Johnson and will force Jack Rodwell and Steven Pienaar into the dreaded "late fitness test".

Man of the Match [8.12.09 vs. Mexico]: Oguchi Onyewu

Project 2010 19 August @ 01:36 PM EST

MAN OF THE MATCH: This was clearly a two-horse race. While Charlie Davies did score the USA's lone goal, he failed to put away his golden opportunity to get the go-ahead in the second half. Overall, a good performance, but we had to give the nod to Oguchi Onyewu.

World Cup qualifying: USA-Mexico report card

Intelligent Soccer » Smarter soccer is better soccer 13 August @ 01:00 AM EST

So many of the United States' players played so poorly, it's somewhat amazing the U.S. was less than 10 minutes away from leaving Azteca with a draw.

But, predictably, the U.S. ran out of gas (altitude matters) to lose the Concacaf World Cup qualifier, 2-1, against Mexico. A draw would have been a fantastic result and would have kept Mexico's World Cup chances in serious jeopardy.

West Ham United Season Preview

Fantasy EPL 12 August @ 11:00 PM EST
What to say about West Ham? They are the very definition of a midtable club. Ambitious to a point, but hampered by history and finance. They have a young, exciting squad and a manager in Zola who will look to utilize that vibrancy. They have a solid defence with depth at center back and the under-rated Robert Green between the sticks. USA vs. Mexico: Matchday Preview

Soccer By Ives 12 August @ 09:43 AM EST

"It's on our list of things to do."

With an uncharacteristic smirk on his face and confidence in his voice, Bob Bradley uttered those words back in February when asked about the U.S. national team winning in Mexico. The Americans had just defeated Mexico in Columbus and Bradley had every reason to feel confident about his team's chances of coming to Mexico and recording the team's first victory on American soil.
