‘Mr. Nice Guy', ‘Pinocchio', ‘a lovely man but a terrible manager' these are all the ways
former Middlesbrough boss, Gareth Southgate was described. "The Rookie" on Boro
bench got sacked even though he was only one point behind the leading teams. In spite of the 2:0
win over Derby, president Steve Gibson made the decision that must be respected.

Fresh news coming out of Stadio San Paolo in Naples suggests that the AC Milan dressing room was
left stunned following a disappointing 2-2 draw against Napoli. While the result ensured that the
Rossoneri extended their vital unbeaten streak, the manner in which Milan lost control of the game
is making all the headlines in Italy.

The English Championship is almost a third into the 2009-10 season. It remains very close at the
top of the table and only four point separating the top nine teams. Newcastle United remains on top
and looks the favorite to win an automatic promotion spot. West Bromwich Albion is also in the top
four and another club that has to be a favorite to be promoted.

cost-cutting at the Riverside Stadium. Recession-busting Boro will only appoint managers with the
initials GS in future. Gordon Strachan can look forward to some oversized hand-me-downs from Gareth

It was with some sadness I heard that Gareth Southgate had been sacked yesterday. I always felt
he had the making of a decent manager. I suppose in these days of quick fix changes and changing
managers when a few results go wrong, none of us should be surprised.
OK, Boro were relegated last season but I felt he was working with his hands tied a little.

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson finally lost patience with Gareth Southgate after sacking
him following Tuesday night 2-0 victory over Derby County.
"The long term future of the club was a key decision in replacing Southgate. One good result
wasn't going to change that decision,"
"We had a strategy for Gareth's replacement.

Oh my!
What a day.
My emotions are in shreds.
Work did not present anything out of the ordinary.
My lover and I continue to live together in hippy paradise.
So why the trauma?
Well it started at about 7.50am when I heard on the radio that Gareth Southgate had been sacked
last night.

Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his duties as manager of Middlesbrough Football Club with
immediate effect. The decision was announced in the early hours of this morning and came hot on the
heels of yesterday's 2-0 victory over Derby County at the Riverside.
The win over Derby ended a run of three straight home defeats in the Championship, and it is
this along with falling home attendences - less than 17,500 for the Derby game - that is being
rumoured as the contributing factors to Southgate's dismissal.

A little over two weeks ago, the transfer window slammed shut, leaving many Boro fans
disillusioned. We had not brought in any big names. We had not brought in the fabled target man we
so desired. We had not brought in.... anyone. Hopes of keeping Tuncay and Robert Huth, and seeing
them outclass the Championship until January, vanished in an instant.

Christmas is a time for miracles: flying reindeer, warring families reunited, a decrease in
stabbings (unless you live in Croydon), and the only four weeks of the year where fat, sweaty,
silver-haired paedophiles find gainful employment.
However, THIS Christmas may also be when Mark Hughes finds himself out of a job, pink slip in
hand, wondering where it all went downhill.

The number of English Premier League clubs are said to be interested in signing Serbian
Under 21 midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has already spent some time in England
while on trial at Middlesbrough. The creative midfielder impressed the visiting scouts at
the Under 21 Euro in Sweden in Serbia's first match with Italy and it seems that he has
done enough to earn him a lucrative deal this summer even though he will miss the remaining games
at the competition through injury.

Relegation is still proving very difficult to come to terms with, to talk about and
above all accept. Time they say is a great healer, but I firmly believe in sport and in particular
football you never fully recover from the bad times just as you never forget the good
times.
We have to at some point face up to the fact that we are now a Championship side, one of the
favourites to be promoted in the coming 2009/2010 season and now we have to deal with this and move
forward or we would face turning into the next Nottingham Forest or even worse Leeds United.

The most ludicrous rumour of the week was Paul Scholes being 'tempted' to leave Manchester
United to take on a player-coach role at Stoke. Unsurprisingly, Stoke distanced themselves from it
fairly quickly.
But if that wasn't mental enough, the latest story suggests Gareth Southgate is keen to bring
Gary Neville to the Riverside.

The season isn't actually over yet, but several managers have quit (or in Sunderland's case
jumped before they were pushed out) and clubs from Celtic to Chelsea are looking for a new manager.
Remarkably, Eriksson is not on any shortlist this time around (not even the bookies) and perhaps
more surprisingly, Southgate and Brown still have jobs while Shearer is seriously considering
sticking around at Newcastle.

FC Twente's ascent up the Eredivisie has gone a some ways in rehabilitating the image of the
much maligned ex-England manager. Steve McLaren's resume now includes a Dutch accent picked up at

Boro, his former club who might be walking out Gareth Southgate.
