This week, we shall be running a series of five posts examining the fortunes of 5 clubs that have
experienced significant financial and/or organisational turmoil in recent times. Unfortunately,
this cross section is but the very precarious tip of a very grubby iceberg indeed - and if you
think the problems we shall detail are unique to this quintet alone or indeed the 72 clubs in the
Football League, then think again.
Six years ago to this very day, Theo Walcott signed for Arsenal Football Club at the age of just
16-years old. The teenager, who had set the Football League Championship and the south coast alight
whilst playing for Southampton, was signed by Arsene Wenger just a couple of months before his 17th
birthday.
Wrexham were denied a lucrative tie with Newcastle United after a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out
defeat to Brighton in an enthralling FA Cup third-round replay.
Craig Mackail-Smith scored the decisive penalty after Peter Brezovan had denied Dean Keates to set
up a fourth-round home clash against Alan Pardew's Newcastle.
OK so it's not the major striker or defender signing that some have been looking for but the
club announced its first deal of the year with the news that Yago Falque has signed on a permanent
deal from Juventus.
The 21 year old Spaniard has been with the club since the start of the campaign with the
intention of completing a season long loan.
Hampton and Richmond striker Dan Thompson's proposed move to Portsmouth has fallen through, with a
host of Premier League clubs circling, according to The Daily Star.
The non-league forward has been heavily linked with a move to the south coast, however Stoke City
have also reportedly lodged a bid.
Twenty years ago in January, Wrexham AFC managed one of the great FA Cup surprises of all time.
They had finished the previous season at the bottom of the Football League and had only been spared
relegation to the Football Conference on account of the League expanding its size, while their
Third Round opponents in that competition, Arsenal, had ended the previous season as the champions
of England.
Despite the memory of the dreadful performance against Leeds on Tuesday evening looming large in my
mind I'm actually quite looking forward to a trip to the south coast this weekend. Admittedly it's
because it's been a while since I've had the thrill of a new ground to tick off the list, but well,
you have to take your pleasures where you can as a Forest fan [.
Some good words today from Matt Le Tissier about both Alan Pardew and the Newcastle side.
Matt Le Tissier Tiote and Cabaye are heartbeat of the side Le Tissier spent his entire playing
career Southampton, and in 540 appearances for the south coast side, scored 210 goals in career
the lasted from 1986 through 2002.
Portsmouth are understood to be closing in on non-league starlet Dan Thompson, who has also
attracted interest from Liverpool and Newcastle according to skysports.com.
The 17-year-old striker, who currently plies his trade for Hampton & Richmond has been tipped for a
bright future, as a host of Barclays Premier League clubs continue to monitor the situation.
Vicente: From the Mestalla to FalmerThe year is 1997 and on England's South Coast, things are far from sunny, writes David
Hartrick.
Brighton and Hove Albion are facing an uncertain future as the Goldstone Ground has been sold as a
result of an asset strip from a board led by a man with little to no regard for the club.
'It's playing poorly and still managing to win that's a sign of a good team'
If I had a pound for every time I've heard that in the last 36 hours I'd have enough money to make
Keith Andrews' move to Portman Road a permanent one.
The scoreline suggests that the midfielder's 80th minute strike was the only difference between the
two sides, but that wasn't the case.
Southampton may be an unlikely breeding ground for top Premiership talent but as all Spurs fans
will know, they gave us PFA player of the year Gareth Bale while apparently there are some
ex-saints plying their trade up the road.
With that track record, it's no surprise that the top sides are keeping tabs on the south
coast's biggest club and Spurs are believed to be preparing a move for Luke Shaw, a 16 year old who
has just broken into the first team squad at St Mary's.

Agger out for weeks as Reds head for south coast
Liverpool are set to be without the services of Daniel Agger for at least six weeks after news
that the Danish international broke two ribs on Sunday at White Hart Lane. Kenny Dalglish played
the injury down somewhat, telling LFC.
After defeat at home to Portsmouth two weeks ago and an under-strength young team were beaten by
Southampton on the South coast last week, I'm sure the Academy would be desperate for three points
today to reward what's actually been a very promising start to the new season. 1st Half United got
off to a [.
So, three weeks into the new Football League season and in many ways it's much the same as the
last. The divisions might be different, but Southampton and Brighton are still dazzling on the
south coast; Peterborough are still serving up improbable goalfests at London Road; Crawley are
still cruising at the top of the league; and, less happily, Plymouth's horrific decline continues
seemingly
With the top two from last year's League 1 table being transposed atop the Championship, it is
perhaps understandable that much attention has been focused on the South Coast mutual dislike
society, Southampton and Brighton. However, the third of the promoted clubs have also made an
encouraging start to their campaign.
League One is the junction at which all of English footballs avenues meet. At one end of the
spectrum are the likes of Charlton Athletic and the two Sheffield clubs, who have fallen from their
once lofty perches and are now trying to figure a way to get back to where they feel that they
deserve to be.
Liverpool target Danny Ings has emerged as the subject of a surprise summer transfer bid from
Russian based club Lokomotiv Moscow according to talkSPORT.
The highly rated Bournemouth starlet has been earning rave reviews for his performances on the
south coast last season, capturing the interest of a number of Barclays Premier League clubs.
One of the most memorable seasons in recent times just has to be 1994/95: It was a crazy year in
many ways and one which saw Jurgen Klinsmann arrive and the advent of a bizarre 4-1-5
formation.
There are many great memories from that season and one of these took place at the Dell, where
mutual loathing between Southampton and Spurs fans was still a few years away.

Portsmouth striker David Nugent is out-of-contract this summer and the one-time England
international is keen to resolve his playing situation one way or another in the coming weeks.
The former Bury trainee enjoyed a good footballing education at Gigg Lane in League Two, earning
a move to Preston North End, who, at the time were challenging for Championship promotion.
In League One, the sense that this was to be the year of the south coast started to grow as
winter turn to spring. Brighton & Hove Albion soared away at the top of the table, and as the home
straight of the season came into view, the pre-season favourites Southampton also began to pull
away into the distance, themselves securing an automatic promotion place with a couple of games of
the season still to spare.
For men of a certain age, the name of Leatherhead FC makes the eyes mist over and the memories
come flooding back. The Tanners were in Division One of the Isthmian League (which was renamed the
Premier Division in 1977, following reorganisation) when they beat Colchester United and Brighton &
Hove Albion on the way to the Fourth Round of the FA Cup in 1975, where the BBC's Match Of The Day
cameras saw them steal a two goal lead against First Division Leicester City before losing by three
goals to two.
Ritchie de Laet joined Portsmouth on loan in January, after already playing for Preston and
Sheffield United on loan this season.
This week he has claimed that he's really happy with the progress he's made over the last few
months on the south coast.
"This must be my best-ever season because I am playing that many games," he said.
There are just four weeks left to go of the season in the Blue Square South, one of the two
feeder leagues to the Blue Square Premier, and there is still all to play for at the top of the
table. This week's Non-League Videos Of The Week features six of the top eight in the league, and
with the battle for the title and for the four play-off places still wide open, there is still all
to play for.
At the Withdean Stadium this afternoon, all the fun of the fair was on display, with two goals
in the last few minutes and a win that keep Brighton & Hove Albion at the top of League One. This
success is well deserved, but there is a knock-on effect of sorts going on just up the road at
Whitehawk.
You can take a club to Turkey but can you turkey a club?
It was quite a surprise when word leaked out this past autumn that Toronto FC would be spending
its preseason in Turkey. In the previous four years, TFC were more like Quebecois senior citizens
who went to Florida for the winter. Their opponents usually resembled Old-Age Home U-90 teams
too.
La Liga Lowdown, Jornada 20: Málaga – new manager, new players, same old problems is a post
from: Just Football
Until recently, no one really paid too much attention to south coast side
Málaga. They're your typical ‘yo-yo' club, bouncing between the top two tiers
of Spanish football, the Primera and Segunda División.
This according to Matt Law from the Express, who seems to have an inside line on the transfer of
the young winger. The player has chosen Arsenal ahead of Liverpool, but the sticking point
remains as to whether he joins up at London Colney this month or stays on the south coast until the
summer.
Either way, this appears to be a decent deal for the club.
