Champion League: Ramsey seals late win

Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to strike an injury-time winner that guided Arsenal to a famous 1-0 victory over Olympique Marseille at Stade Velodrome.

Earlier in the match, a blatant handball from Marseille's Souleymane Diawara went unnoticed as the Gunners were denied an easy penalty decision.

Chelsea fall to Marseille

Didier Drogba's return to the club he considers "home" was not exactly a scintillating one. His club continued its downward spiral as they lost to Brandão's late goal. Chelsea were distinctly unlucky to have not been awarded spot kicks when Souleymane Diawara's fouls brought down both Malouda and Salomon Kalou, who also had the mortification of mooning the world.

O Marselha e as reticências

UEFA's annual popularity contest, the UEFA.com Team of the Year 2010, is up and running for your perusal and vote, and they apparently did a solid job this year. Of course maybe it's the lack of coffee so far, but there doesn't seem to be a terrible snub popping off the page at the moment.

Little tidbits that made me smile this week but weren't worth a whole post: First, I just can't look at Bordeaux's kits this year without thinking of adorable little boys in sailor suits. Or maybe it was this one I was thinking of: Whatever. Don't forget to salute. And speaking of Bordeaux, [.

The Ligue 1 starts off with a bang, or should I say two?

A Football Report at related • 1 view

By Ulysse Pasquier, writing from Montreal

Although the level of play in France might not be as high as in the Premier League or La Liga, I've always thought "la Ligue 1" had some of the most exciting seasons in European football. Even during Lyon's 7-year dominance, the title race has often been very intense until the last fixtures and fought between 4 or more teams, while that is rarely the case in England or Spain.

Goals from four different players helped Marseille coast over Nice. Bakari Koné, Stéphane M'Bia, Mathieu Valbuena, and Souleymane Diawara scored for L'OM while Nice's Emerse Faé prevented the clean sheet.

Marseilles win kept them on top of the table as second placed Auxerre kept pace overcoming Nancy Lorraine.

The year was 1993, and Marseille had just won the equivalent of today's Champions League. Who knew that was the beginning of a silverware drought that would last seventeen years? It's been a real roller coaster ride for many teams in the French league this season. With half a season gone and a deserved winter break underway it's a good time to look back at what's happened so far in one of Europe's most competitive league.

Lyon-Marseille 5:5, that’s what I call a derby!

Derby games are always passionate affairs and they generate a lot of excitement but the match itself tens to disappoint the viewers, mostly because the managers are always too cautious and they prevent the players from giving their attacking best. The games between Lyon and Marseille have not been exception to this rule in the past and no wonder nobody expected too many goals when these sides met on Sunday, but we saw a remarkable match and no less than 10 goals, five on each side.

Ligue 1 Preview - Bordeaux, Marseille and Lyon’s Summer of Love

What a difference a year makes. Against odds, FC Bordeaux dethroned Ligue 1's 7 time consecutive champions Lyon to lift the Ligue 1 trophy. With 12 wins on the trot at the tail end of the season, FC Bordeaux secured a top dog status with its first league title in a decade. Along with the Coupe De La Ligue crown to secure a league and cup double, les Girodins wagged its tail at fellow title hopefuls Marseille and Lyon - leaving the former chasing tails and the latter stuck with its tail between its legs.

Herve Renard's cheeky grin, bright white shirts and furious bawls at perenially offside strikers are now a distant memory. Nevertheless, the wheels of African football continue to grind along, domestic leagues are in full swing from Lubumbashi to Nairobi, and the heroes (and villains) of the Cup of Nations are back with their respective European, Asian and African clubs.
