Will this be the year that Marta will be dethroned as FIFA's women's world player of the year?
The Brazilian striker has won the award for the past five years and was among the 10 players
nominated for the 2011 award.
The United States has three players on the list all of whom played for the WNT at last
summer's Women's World Cup in Germany.
FELIZ MARTES! The shortlist for the Women's FIFA Ballon d'Or has been
announced and surprise, surprise, three of the names drawn are from the US national team.
The winners, Japan, also have two possible winners in the list, as do France. Abby
Wambach (seen above with a fan), Hope Solo and Aya
Miyama are a few of the key names but all these talented futbolitas are all
winners in their own right.
After his nine years with Robbie Jackson and subsequent five years with Sonia, Bianca, Mickey,
Vinnie and Gus, I'm sure that many of you, like me, were wondering what became of Eastenders' most
famous dog (other than Ethel's little Willie, obviously).
Rumours abound that Bianca killed Wellard by feeding him chocolate, before scattering his ashes on
the allotment.

Sweden took the 3rd place play-off with a 2-1 win against France in today's
2011 Women's World Cup in Germany, despite being reduced to 10 players in the 68th minute when
Josephine Oqvist kicked out at French defender Sonia Bompastar.
Three U.S. players have been nominated for the Golden Ball at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

With seventeen minutes left in the France/USA semi-final, Eurosport analyst Emma Hayes was asked
if the game, already a classic, was going to extra-time. "We're going to extra-time," she declared,
"unless someone puts a good ball in and Abby (Wambach, USA's combative centre-forward) gets on the
end of it.
The final of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup will be contested by two-time former winners United
States and Japan who will be appearing in their first ever final against the odds.
Not many people tipped Japan before the tournament to go so far but they have upset the apple
cart especially after knocking out tournament hosts and defending champions Germany in the
quarter-finals.

Usually we write something amusing here. Lately, our purple prose preamble has been little more
than a device to divert your attention from the fact that the Women's World Cup and Copa America
haven't kept us to the level of excitement we demand here.

The US Women spanked France with two late goals to secure themselves a spot in the World Cup
against Japan (who beat Sweden 3-1 in the other semi-final) in Frankfurt on Sunday.
Laura Cheney swept home to put the States a goal up inside nine minutes, only for France to
equalise ten minutes after the break when Sonia Bompastor's flat cross bounced across the six-yard
box and nestled inside the far post.

Lauren Cheney's goal and set piece assist proved vital to the US semi-final win over France. The
US fought off a very impressive French attack and then launched some very opportunistic
counterattacks against some questionable defending to prevail. Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan were
the other US goalscorers.
The United States Women's National Team punched their ticket to the World Cup final with a 3-1
victory over France in Moenchengladbach today.
Although they were outplayed at times, the U.S managed to defend calmly and keep their shape
against the French, clinching their fifth appearance in a Women's World Cup final, which will be
played on Sunday against Japan.
Lauren Cheney: Her stunning goal and set piece assist lifted the USA over France
First, kudos have to go to the unsung US defense that battled a spectacular French side to no
more damage than Sonia Bompastor's equalizer. Take a bow Christine Rampone, Amy LePeilbet, Ali
Krieger, and especially Becky Sauerbrunn whose assured performance belied this being her World Cup
debut.
Carli Lloyd's clever back heel has Heather O' Reilly doing what she does best -haring down the
left flank and with a sliver of space curls in a cross which Lauren Cheney arriving near post turns
into into goal. Perfect finish.
The USA got off to an early start for the second time in a row.
Once teamates for the Washington Freedom of the WPS, quarterfinal hero Abby Wambach is set to face
her former Freedom teamate Sonia Bompastor as the USWNT battle France for the chance to advance
to...

An entire country, in which "World Cup" was still synonymous with "controversy", is
rediscovering football through the Women's World Cup. Reaching the semi finals of the tournament
for the first time in their history, Les Bleues have enchanted France after beating England on
penalties.
Well, I'm not in Germany. I know this because even though the country I'm in (France) has a good
team in the World Cup, and even though that team was on the cover of more than a few of the weekend
papers and Sunday magazines, no one cares that they scored the tournament's first goal in a win
over Nigeria.
