Now I know Australia won last night but Fox Sports continue to suggest this was Thailand's last
chance.
They must win - or get a draw to stay alive was the verdict from Australia's best football
commentator, Simon Hill. Simon is always on the ball, pretty much always correct on this stuff so I
was surprised when he went down this line again and again.
Socceroos won in Bangkok last night.
And wasn't it fantastic. Tense, tight and terrific football - from the Thai's at least. With a
packed stadium in downtown flooded Bangkok the Aussies are no longer in Oceania.
And remember this is only the first group stage.
We needed a point - but if Robbie Kruse didnt know which of the Sutkee brothers at the end he
played with in Melbourne - Michael Zullo had a fair idea by the end of the night.

It was once the home of one of Australia's finest teams based in Sydney's southern suburbs, St.
George Budapest (who later became St. George Saints), playing in Australia's then-leading
professional division, the National Soccer League (they won the league in 1983). The club had a
rich history, having supplied almost half of Australia's 1974 World Cup team.

Okay after all the anti-Dutch experts have lined up to bag the guy....dare I suggest he did his
job! And did it pretty well.
I know his teams were pretty poor in the World Cup - only finishing around 16 or so, hey that's
around the same World ranking as the big Socceroos - and I know it was grim to watch at times.

Looks like Brett Holman might miss the next World Cup Qualifiers due to injury - so a chance for
Timmy Cahill to come back in?
International football - players come and go pretty quickly.
Just five years ago, Cahill was a bench warmer for Hiddinks team in 2006 - he came on with
explosive impact and now just five years later his international career is less secure.

The A-League is back - the Young Socceroos have played their World Cup - so how many of our young
guns are flying around the league on the opening day of the season? Or come to that the next group
of Young Socceroos?
Steven Lustica - hard to believe a Young Socceroo couldn't get TWO full games with the Gold Coast
over the last two seasons, walks into a four year deal with Hadjuk, has played a number of crucial
games in the centre mid position already.
Love Mile Jedinak and all he's achieved but to take the Socceroos to the next level we need a
better, more skilled midfielder.
Neil Kilkenny is not it.
Carl Valeri has done a fantastic job for Australia over the last couple of years, like Vinny Grella
and Jason Culina at their peak in 2006, his contribution has perhaps gone undervalued.

Do you remember when we used to make hard work of Oman?
With Harry Kewell, Brett Emerton, Tim Cahill, Vinny Grella all English based in the line-up.
Three times we played them in the last four years - three times we struggled - really
struggled.
This time with a bunch of so-called lesser names, younger boys, we waltz it.

It's brilliant the lads have got us through the whole of the off-season and now they are starting
to fire. Harry, Holger, Socceroos, Olyroos, they are all over it - and the W-League as well.

The Capital doesn't have an A-League team, the FFA don't want the Capital, it can't be maintained
with the Brumbies and Raiders and now GWS in the city.
You've heard it all before.
But when you step back from the emotion it's Canberra's intelligence that can and needs to get it
over the line.
Two Canberrans Josip Simunic (Dinamo Zagreb) and Steven Lustica (Hadjuk Split) took to the European
football stage on the weekend. First v Second - massive crowd, massive atmosphere.
Interesting Lustica was rejected by Gold Coast United at the end of last season. He's now played
against Barcelona, started 3 league games for Hadjuk, including this top of the table clash.
Football fans label Coaches crap or brilliant.
Jose Mourinho used to be brilliant, now he's second he's well...less so.
Alex Ferguson is always brilliant - he always wins, whereas Neil Lennon is crap - he comes second -
add in Vitaslev Lavicka - season 1 brilliant, season 2 crap.
Ange Postecoglou is now brilliant and despite losing heaps of players in Season 1 and beginning of
Season 2 if he's not top of the league after three games he'll be.

We'll need a squad to see us through to Brazil, a big squad. So no problems for all you Tim Cahill
fans, he'll be there to the end.
But is Tim a certain starter in the Australian football team?
Not in my book - not anymore. Now before I get smashed by all you Timmaay fans let's take a look at
my reasoning.
All the so-called experts and many fans on football forums denigrated Australia for their recent
World Cup Qualifier against Thailand.
Why?
Because we allowed Thailand to score first, we didn't pass with fluency, we launched the ball high
into the box too many times, or maybe because we didn't win 6-0.

And answer to the quiz question: How many Roar players or former Roar players in the Socceroos
squad - it's right in the poddie just three minutes in so go for it!

And why we despise the silly Rebecca Wilson and of course Aussie Football, Harry, Socceroos,
Harry's impact, Harry's position, Harry's groin, Harry's wife, Harry's house, Harry's kid, Harry's
greatest goal, Harry's worst game, yes it's Harrytime plus Brett - did we forget Brett!
With the A-League teetering along last year football was heading back to the future.
Despite the move into Asia, a successful Asia Cup campaign, the rise of the Matildas and the
increasing number of Young Guns pushing into the Socceroos and starring in the A-League moving to
Europe and Asia, football still lacked any sense of security or money for our A-League clubs to
survive, never mind to move ahead.

Harry's position, Harry's groin, Harry's wife, Harry's house, Harry's kid, Harry's greatest goal,

And answer to the quiz question: When did Harry first play in Thailand - no not in 2007 with
Arnie's Socceroos, or with Leeds but as an U13 with Marconi on his way to Europe for a Marconi
tour!
Cashed up and paranoid AFL have another wee problem to solve.
Delighted when they assisted to sabotage the World Cup bid, ecstatic when the recent growth of
professional football was halted; if A-League crowds and failing teams/owners is anything to go by;
the all powerful AFL must have thought they'd thwarted football expansion.
Harry Kewell is back to play in Australia, in the A-League and I like most other football fans are
delighted.
Sure on Twitter, The Australian's Ray Gatt and surprisingly The Age's Mick Lynch, have been
defending the so-called "opinion piece" from Sydney Morning Herald writer and Fox Sports
Commentator Mike Cockerill on Harry's return - oh how Mike despises Harry.
The medical community of Melbourne are collectively licking their lips. For the first time in his
professional career Harry Kewell is playing club football in Australia. Melbourne Victory have
beaten supposed interest from Sydney FC in securing his signature on a three year deal. Since
emerging from the Leeds United academy in the late 90's [.
Everyone else has had their say on Harry Kewell, so I don't see why I shouldn't. I am absolutely
delighted that one of our best ever Socceroos, and one that is still playing and having an
influence at the national level has decided to join the A-League. It will be a crowd booster not
only [...]

Jan Versleijan and Han Berger have been slated by many over the last few weeks for their team
performances at the various World Cups.
Versleijan as manager of the teams, and Berger for laying down the 1-4-3-3 revolution, with a
little help from Rob Baan the former Dutch Technical Director.
Michael Lynch - a man who's family is from the far end of the Curragh (Irish Racecourse) we're just
a bit closer, but further away. Got it?
Lynchy is a much respected Aussie footy writer - but on his player development focus written in the
Age I reckon he has a couple of points wrong or at least is unaware of what is coming.
Canberra Club members may have an opportunity to assist Australian player development. If history
in the local clubland is anything to go by, there is no guarantee they'll do it -at least not
without a fight!
Along time ago I was good enough to take on Mark Viduka and Craig Moore in football.
