Out of the gym, onto the field

0
Someone pointed out to me the moment he knew the U.S. was going to defeat Brazil for the gold medal.

It was during the break for the overtime periods, when Brazil's players fell to the ground to rest, exhausted. The U.S. players were obviously fitter, and a tired Brazilian defense would probably give up chances. Click to continue reading...

National past time

0
I went to Dodger stadium to cover Chivas USA's Claudio Suarez throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. I needed quotes for my SuperClasico preview, plus I thought a pic of Nomar and Claudio would look good on the blog. I didn't intend to stay for the game, but it turns out that I parked in the wrong spot. Click to continue reading...

Singaporeans sign up for Canberra

1
The potential for overseas sign-ups for the Canberra and Region A-League team is, I believe, significant.

Overnight Razif Bahari from Singapore, left Canberra 5 years ago, only failed to sign-up as he got an error message. But the email he sent to his friends, (see below) all ex-Canberrans, from other countries is interesting. Click to continue reading...

Essential Olympic Soccer Web sites - & a Trivia Challenge

7

Even though the men's and women's Olympic soccer tournamanets are already under way, the games proper begin Friday.

Before we get to some suggested Web sites to maximize your Olympic soccer experience, here's a trivia question for you: what percentage of the 18-player U.S. Men's Olympic roster has ties to Southern California?

Wizards @ United Game Day #18

2
Greetings from RFK Stadium, home of D.C. United. The stadium is old but comfy for the home side usually, but they've struggled recently at home.

Will Daniel is in town for this match again. If you don't recall a story from earlier this year, check it out here. Daniel first met Jimmy Conrad back in 1997 when Conrad was a member of UCLA's NCAA Final 4 team. Click to continue reading...

MLSnet Launches Pub Section

1
I must say after seeing a list of pubs across the land, I want a drink, preferably a Sam Adams. Anyways, I thought this was worth passing along to you all because I know how much some of you probably drink before, during, after and in-between soccer games. MLSnet, the one and only, has launched a [.. Click to continue reading...

Definitely noticed

0
There may have been only a few people who bothered to read all the way through the comments on my post about Toronto fans at the MLS All-Star Game. One major point of contention was whether or not very many people were actually watching the exhibition match (the implication being that it didn't matter how the fans behaved because few saw it). Here's a link to an interesting survey on the Sideline Views Blog. I would encourage all who are interested to respond and please post your responses here to and maybe we can get some dialogue going. My answers are listed below.

Whaddayathink?

1
Someone is working on a U.S. Soccer project (it's not the federation, it's a scholarly venture), focusing on the men's team and sent me a list of questions, wanting my perspective. I know what I think, and usually people don't have to ask twice for my opinion, but I'm well aware that there's a world of different thoughts out there. Click to continue reading...

Dealing With Overly Helpful Soccer Parents

2
Although it is massively important that the soccer parents attend their children's soccer games and soccer training in order to offer support and encouragement, it can become very annoying when they start getting overly helpful. This can become very disruptive and contribute to upsetting the well laid out plans that you have worked hard on [. Click to continue reading...

Olympic Games Soccer Web Site Launched

3

NBC has unveiled what looks the most comprehensive Web site I've seen yet that covers the men's and women's soccer tournaments at next months Olympics.

Hey, you'd come with something like that as well if you'd invested jillions of dollars for the rights to the Olympics

Check it out here.

On the seventh day he....worked some more

4
Well, work in my position doesn't exactly require any heavy lifting, so i don't want this to come off as complaining, because i'm not.

After a long and fruitful night promoting the Red Stars at the Fire game* at Toyota Park Saturday, i put in 12 hours today, but it was all good and fun.

This morning i left for Judson College at 10 am for the WPSL game between local FC Twente3 and Chicago Red Stars WPSL affiliate MYSC Lady Blues. Click to continue reading...

Soccer fans will be well-served by NBC during Olympics

21
The days of plausibly live matches, commerical interruptions and tape delay seem gone, as NBC has teamed up with two major cable companies to create four special all-Olympics channels including an all-soccer one. One channel will be devoted exclusively to carrying men's and women's soccer games 12 hours a day, while a second channel will carry [. Click to continue reading...

Rolling out on streamers

0
I've been waiting to see how this plays out...

Throwing streamers at the opposing team has become the cool thing to do at soccer games in the US. Why? I'm not sure, but it opened a dangerous door. American soccer fans used be upset about things being thrown at our national team players in Central America, now American soccer fans are throwing streamers, beers, etc. Click to continue reading...

I hate penalty kicks!

0
I thought for my first post that I would start this off by talking about the one thing in the modern game of soccer (I am American therefore I call it soccer, why I don't really know) that really bothers me the most and that is the use of penalty kicks to end a game. Nothing has ruined more great soccer games then penalty kicks. Click to continue reading...

Protecting the Egoal

0
"Ego defensiveness" is apparently what is behind raging soccer parents. (Nothing implied about Martin, here, it's just coincidence he's now a new dad.)

I have to laugh at the coping strategies, though. Sucking on a lollipop? Picturing Elton John? Of course, if it works, I have no complaints. Click to continue reading...

Some fun on-line soccer-related video games

8
Bend it like Beckham
One of the better free kick flash games I've played.

Virtual Foosball with Premiership teams
Fun, but not very hard

Stan James original free kick challenge
Probably one of the most unique and original plays on free kicks. Not easy.

Rooney on the Rampage
Very little to do with soccer other than it uses the likeness of Wayne Rooney, who gets the idea to head butt his opponents by watching Zidane in last year's World Cup. Click to continue reading...
