By Graig Carbino - ALBANY, NY (Nov 19, 2009) USSoccerPlayers -- As someone watching a soccer game
from the perspective of "analyst," it would be nice to always come up with spellbinding ideas of
what worked and what didn't. We'd all like to have our own unique take on what just happened, why
and why not, and all that.

Following the controversial decision to allow France's goal to stand as Thierry Henry clearly
handled the ball prior to assisting William Gallas, it is only normal to have increased complaints
and ever growing displeasure at the level of refereeing.

The TV ratings are in for the last round of Premier League games on ESPN2 and Fox Soccer
Channel. For ESPN2, it's a tale of two cities as they had an impressive number of viewers for the
Tottenham against Sunderland game (259,831) but a very disappointing number of viewers for the
Monday match between Liverpool and Birmingham City (182,138) the second lowest viewing figure all
season long on ESPN2.

One of our connections on the jersey/menchadise side of the soccer game tells us that adidas say
FCD will be wearing the adidas Stricon jersey in 2010. Stricon is a new style that will not
available until 12/25/09. FCD, obviously, will be wearing a version that has horizontal stripes.

David Beckham promised himself that he would play for every England national
soccer game. With over a hundred games played Beckham now holds the record for most games played
with England. However his commitments with England will have to be on hold now that the LA Galaxy
have made it to the Western Finals in the MLS.

I did not know that the MLS was a giant holding area for players seeking addiction
counseling.
Through the Revs vs Fire match, Sullivan and Bretos in their verbiage sprinkled the word
"intervention". Even in their word salad, that word stuck out. Whereas Bretos usage was confined to
the more physical aspect of the game when a defender cut off a pass or cleared a corner, Sullivan's
was a bit more cognitive when he said that Jeff Larontewicz's "intervention" pushed Shalrie Joseph
to play better.

For those of you who TIVO'd the Real Salt Lake vs. Columbus Crew last night, a warning:
STOP! For the love of God, don't try and watch this match. Don't even risk trying to erase it. I
recommend that you yank the box out of the wall, go out back and burn it.

A few times over the past few years I've noted the obvious word play, "The Roar purred." I guess it
would have been used more if it was true more often, but even when they were really getting it
together, like toward the end of last season, it didn't quite work as a metaphor.
Yesterday against Perth at Ballymore the Brisbane Roar Women purred.

So OK, let's get this one out of the way up front:
Does Onstad throw his shoulder at Montero? Obviously yes.
Does Montero drop to the ground like he just took a .50 cal round to the head? Obviously yes.
Does Onstand then do the "I'm checking to see if my face is bleeding" act like he's Chuck Wepner or
something?

What a great trip I had to Chicago this weekend. I got to see lots of old friends (like
Steve Pastorino, Nico and Coz), see some team
handball, work a terrific soccer game with people I like and eat food I can't get here in the
desert. Oh, and I met Willie the Northwestern Wildcat (above).

It is one hell of a night for a stadium finale.

both and the final soccer game at Giants Stadium. New York fans might feel some sense of nostalgia
as this long-time home for soccer closes, but TFC fans only care about one thing.

This is not the sort of morning that I'd relish watching a soccer game ... but two of my
intrepid housemates (applesrisp in hand) will be heading to Lewiston momentarily to watch the
Bobcats tangle with the Panthers. Would be so nice if Bates could defeat Middlebury ... and while
it's probably in the unlikely category, what I love about sports is that "it could happen.

Call it Rafa's Last Stand.
When Manchester United travels to Anfield on Sunday to take on Liverpool, the defending EPL
champions will have a very real chance of beating the struggling Reds and pushing Rafa Benitez one
step closer to the exit door.
Liverpool has already lost four matches this year in the EPL, and dropped more points in
Champions League at mid-week, making Sunday's match a virtual must-win for the under-fire Spanish
manager.

Can't stand the suspense or the scenario-crunching? Here's what will happen this weekend in MLS,
chronologically:
Toronto at New York, 7:30 p.m.: A lot of people seem to be assuming Toronto will

final game of a magical era -- the interim coachship of Richie Williams.

If you play soccer or are a fan, you know why it's called the Beautiful Game. Soccer is a global
language that has the power to unify people. Last weekend, a group of players got together in Los
Angeles so that others around the world can have the opportunity to play as well.
The event, called Play Soccer So They Can, was organized by Opportunitas Aequas (Latin for
"Equal Opportunity), a non-profit, grassroots organization that uses soccer to build stronger
communities for youth affected by war and violence.

Some random thoughts from RFK.....
DC soccer fans are among the best in the nation. My only previous experience
seeing a soccer game at RFK was when I saw Norway play Mexico in the 1994 World Cup, so last night
was my first chance to see the DC soccer fans in action.

I don't want Prairie's banner of Charlie Davies off the top yet, so here it is again.
You can't separate out the emotional aspects of this week, because the emotions caused and
overwhelmed the actual events.
Another of Andy's pictures is worth more than a thousand words, because most of the words are
misleading or inadequate:
There's a lot going on there, and I'm sure when you saw Landon with that particular banner you felt
a whole bunch of conflicting emotions.

Well, Costa Rica, you just got owned by Jonathan Bornstein. Marinate on that for the next four

Either way, that is about as sour a result as you could possibly have in the final minute of an
intentional soccer game.
