Senior Unemployed English Major CorrespondentsFor today's
entry, we bring you the top ten things Ricardo Clark's 97th-minute winner against Venezuela made us
completely forget. 1. The entire 2010 World Cup, obviously. Welcome back Rico, all is forgiven.
FOX Soccer has a new face. Rob Stone, who began at ESPN in 1992 and returned to the network in
1997, will be the new lead studio host for FOX Soccer, as well as the face for soccer coverage on

This is our last installment in a series of post setting out the top business stories in
American soccer from 2011. We have looked at Portland and Kansas City while also discussing NBC's
entry as a soccer broadcaster and FOX's big play for World Cup television rights. We will set up
a vote to select the top story early next week.
Changeover at ESPN and Arlo White being hired to be the new voice NBC Sports soccer coverage has
raised some interesting discussions on just what exactly makes for a good television announcer in
Major League Soccer coverage. Debates over what matters, how credibility is earned and why an
accent can make a difference have all been waged.

Philadelphia Union
Deportivo Saprissa president Juan Carlos Rojas has confirmed in an interview with a Costa Rican
radio station that the Union has been in contact with the club about Josue Martinez, saying "I
would not go into much detail but there has been interest from Philadelphia [in Martinez].
Today, NBC confirmed reports that they have hired Arlo White as their primary play-by-play voice
for their brand-new Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer coverage. As many of you know, White has
been the voice of Seattle Sounders FC, and ...

Injustice. Obscene profits. In this week's list, we're assembling a crew of famous footballing
names to Occupy FIFA. They won't rest until they bring down the soccer juggernaut (and Sharpie a
moustache on Blatter while he's sleeping).
Arlo White has taken a job with NBC Sports to become their national soccer announcer, according
to a report from KING5, the Seattle Sounders broadcast partner. This would be a considerable loss
for Sounders fans, who have grown to almost universally love the British broadcaster.
@KING5Sports
KING 5 Sports@KING5Sports has learned that #Sounders broadcaster Arlo White is moving on.
This just in from Kerith Gabriel at the Daily News:
Tweet No. 1: According to French pub L'Equipe, @PhilaUnion is said to be vying
for the services of @chelseafc forward Nicolas Anelka.
Tweet No. 2: Source within @PhilaUnion camp just confirmed there IS interest
but said it's a stretch given other offers Anelka has received.
As power is starting to make its return to the Greater Hartford area, we thought it would make
sense to recognize the successful front office in Kansas City. As we said last week, Sporting is
our PR Department of the year. In 2010, we interviewed Rob Thomson, the team's VP of
Communications. At the time of that interview, the Wizards were still the KC franchise and
Community America was still the team's home.
While we wait for the power and heat to return to Hartford County, we thought it would be a good
time to take a look at some of the soccer coverage in mainstream media outlets around the country.
We'll start in New England, where the Boston Globe, via Revs beat reporter Frank Dell'Apa, takes a
look at the current state of the Revolution.
With this piece by new contributor Matthew Pentz, TSG kicks off it's African soccer
coverage.
The Forgotten Footie Continent
The African Champions League exists mostly, if not completely, on the periphery of the soccer
world. The tournament blends a strong history, passionate fans, and an up-and-coming class of young
players, however, and its semifinalists each have a bit of the underdog in them.
Tomorrow marks the 42nd anniversary of the debut of
Monty Python's Flying Circus on the
BBC. To celebrate, we've slapped together a side of our favorite Python characters in an
old-fashioned 4-2-4.
GK -- Black Knight -- Like all great keepers, he allows nothing, not
even dismemberment, to stop him from triumphing.
I don't watch ESPN really outside of soccer coverage but apparently they had TT on there the other
day to talk about the scourge that is concussions, which is not to be confused with the issue of
cons cussin'. The former is a big issue on soccer fields the world over while the latter is largely
an issue within penitentiaries.

Over the years we have learned that are readers are savvy consumers of soccer media who use
multiple sources to check soccer news, keep in touch with other fans and follow trends in the
beautiful game. Because a large part of what we cover is the soccer media, we thought it was time
for the first Footiebusiness poll since 2009.

Ooops. Our bad.Last night, the FBM posted some criticisms of ESPN's soccer coverage from
Wednesday's U.S. match versus Mexico. In that article we drew a connection to a local bar, Cuatro's
(that was unnamed in the article), and tried to highlight the difficulty in satisfying the demands
of "mainstream" sports fans and soccer fans.
The Seattle Sounders are at home this weekend after a week's worth of well needed rest. They
play an improving Chivas USA team at the CLink on Saturday. Hopefully, they can build on last
weekend's win at Sporting KC. Also, for those of you who are interested, Pat Noonan talks about the
foul and the flop from Omar Bravo.
Editor's Note: We've published several op-eds on the Free Beer Movement site, but with no
real distinction between what is news and what is opinion. Our editorials are now going to come
with the feature tag "Making the Case", well, because its an awesome beer pun, and we love
those.
NBC Sports Network has replaced FOX Soccer for the TV rights to MLS beginning in 2012.
So many times the US soccer community that supports Major League Soccer have screamed and
shouted for Fox Soccer Channel to improve their telecasts. It looked like they did so for the last
few months with their improved graphics and better coverage showing respect to Major League Soccer
coverage.
We felt like this more or less.

A big weekend for soccer in the United States. The US Women lost to Japan in the World Cup
Final, however there will probably be another of couple days of soccer coverage from the
mainstream media. Appearances on morning and late night talk shows are sure to follow. What
this means for the WPS remains an open question, but for a weekend, soccer was one of the primary
stories in the worlds of both sports and current events.
*U.S. Soccer announced today an 8 p.m. Sept. 2 friendly against Costa Rica at Home Depot Center
that will air on ESPN2.
Tickets go on sale July 15 starting at $20.
It's a rare non-January friendly in Southern California against a Latin American team, which
U.S. Soccer officials customarily attempt to avoid because of their fan support here.

The Canadian soccer writing landscape has exploded over the last few years. It almost feels
redundant to write this, but the number of Canadian soccer sources now available on the web is
truly remarkable.
I don't want to get in a long-winded breakdown of the "history" of online soccer coverage in
Canada, but suffice it to say, before the internet there were one or two newspaper reporters who
owned the soccer beat, and even then, coverage was sparse.
Two weeks ago I wrote an article entitled Why the Gold Cup Final Should Be on FOX, which argued
that the chance of a USA against Mexico Gold Cup Final would have been a potential home run ratings
bonanza for FOX. However FOX stuck to its guns and decided to keep the final on FOX Soccer
instead of putting it on FOX, the broadcast TV network.

As recently reported, FSC FOX Soccer is going through an exciting rebrand in time for the new
EPL season. As exciting as that sounds, FOX is missing a chance to generate buzz right now with
the Gold Cup. The Gold Cup, now in its knockout stages, will have possibly two weekend games for
the US men's national team -- which is a source of very good ratings.

Full power tonight after some downed wires made posting impossible yesterday. Every so often,
we take a look at how various media are covering soccer in the United States. We thought now was a
good time to take a look at some mainstream sports outlets.
We'll start with Sports Illustrated, where the most recent edition of the magazine to hit the
newstands included a four page spread on the Cascadia rivalary.
Grant Wahl is the best-selling author of "The Beckham Experiment" and the head soccer writer for
Sport Illustrated. Earlier this year he unsuccessfully ran to be nominated for the FIFA
Presidency.
In part two of our conversation with Wahl he talks about that run for FIFA's top job, Sport
Illustrated's growing soccer coverage in print and online, beer in Qatar, this summer's Gold Cup,
early impact players for Brazil 2014, and the soccer's growth in the United States.
- Jason Davis Another American Soccer Show, another 80's movie reference. This is what we do. As
usual, we complement our pop culture inanity with some quality soccer coverage. Since we've avoided
bringing up "Mannequin" to this point in the show's history, it looks like we're doing okay. Jared
and I start out talking about the Karate Kid and an impromptu "wax on, wax off" dance the Rodius
does during the open.
The Union's first appearance on Fox Soccer Channel this season was a rather special one, for the
club's first-ever match against the Portland Timbers marked the debut of Soccer Night in America.
It appears to be a two-pronged effort for Fox Soccer: one, to give MLS matches the "marquee event"
status that have come from CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and NBC's Football Night in America, and
two, to give Fox an opportunity to, in a sense, start anew with their MLS coverage.
Leander Schaerlaeckens of ESPN.com writes of how Jason Kreis has made it to the top of the MLS
coaches food chain.
It was January 2010 and Jason Kreis had a problem. His Real Salt Lake players had just won the MLS
Cup and proved them wrong -- the people who said RSL owner Dave Checketts was nuts for pulling his
34-year-old striker off the field and making him his head coach three years ahead of schedule,
without serving an apprenticeship as an assistant.
From the Evansville Courier Press, April 10, 2011
I watched our U.S. national team take on Paraguay in an international "friendly" in Nashville
last week. The U.S. lost 1-0 in a game that typifies and frustrates about the game of soccer all at
the same time — it probably is the only sport where one team can dominate yet lose.
Arlo White pulled the big upset in the 2nd round of the Brock and Salk's Media Bracket. Our
favorite announcer defeated co-host Mike Salk to move to the elite 8 in the bracket challenge. He
now faces Rick Rizzs of the Mariners Radio Network.
The Bock and Salk show is one of the more prominent on 710 ESPN radio.
