Win FIFA 10 For Xbox or Nintendo Wii

EPL Talk 05 November @ 07:59 AM EST

For the past week, we've been giving away a copy of FIFA 10 the new video game from EA as well as soccer books. I just took a look inside the treasure box and I still have several copies of FIFA 10 that I need to give away as well as Barney Ronay's book, The Manager. So even if you don't win today, be sure to keep on checking back each day for your chance to enter and win the contest.

I think headaches should be outlawed on Wednesdays. I mean, you are as far removed from the most recent weekend as you are from getting to the next one. That's enough misery. A headache on Wednesday is overkill. I vote "no" on Wednesday headaches. What say you?#1 - Chivas USA netminding monster Zach Thornton was tabbed as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year for a second time today. Click to continue reading...

Former USWNT superstar Mia Hamm has pulled a Chili Palmer, becoming a movie producer to adapt Harvey Araton's Alive and Kicking: When Soccer Moms Take the Field for the big screen. That's all fine and good... but I still wanna see her throw a stuntman down restaurant stairs. What can I say? I'm just like that. Click to continue reading...

Why be a Soccer Fan Prt 2

Football Down Under and Beyond 12 September @ 02:43 PM EST
This entire post follows on from the comments on my last piece.
When I first read your comment, Ed, I had to go back and re-read my article. I didn't realise how much it came across as so dark on the A-League. When I sat down to write I had in mind a bit of a comparison of the two soccer experiences of the day, highlighting the simple joys of junior and amateur league soccer. Click to continue reading...

I am feelin' you right now, Diogenes, and I don't even know where Sinope is...#1 - Former Wake Forest strike star Cody Arnoux has made a scoring debut for Everton Reserves. The 21-year old (on the right in the above picture, with fellow new American Toffee Anton Peterlin) came on late to nod one home in a 3-0 win over Burnley Reserves. Click to continue reading...

Down but not out in Georgia

No Short Corners 26 July @ 09:57 AM EST
Waiting for Grant Wahl's magnum opus, I have been devouring Outcasts United by Warren St. John. The format is familiar - an embedded reporter follows a team for a season, inviting the reader into the family with engaging off-field human stories. The club in question are The Fugees, a team of asylum-seekers from warzones worldwide planted by the UN into a conservative Georgia town unused to foreign Click to continue reading...

While preparing for Gold Cup quarterfinal foe Panama, the USMNT took a break to boot field goals with Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers. With the USWNT set to face Canada twice in four days, century seekers Abby Wambach and Christine Sinclair compare notes (warning: this audio seemed quite loud, so maybe start with the sound low). Whatchutalkinbout, Wilis?

Oh, this is droll. Says David Beckham of Landon Donovan remarks in Grant Wahl's forthcoming book:"In every soccer player's eyes throughout the world, it would be unprofessional to speak out about a teammate, especially in the press and not to your face... I will be speaking to Landon either this evening or over the next couple of days. Click to continue reading...

I know I've kinda overlooked MLS the last couple of week, with all the USMNT and transfer happenings, but today I will make up for that. And, of course, the new MLS Club Ladder is up at S365...#1 - President Obama received a signed Samba Kings shirt and then some stick from his Brazilian counterpart at the G-8 Summit, but apparently concluded the meeting by insisting that will not happen the next Click to continue reading...

Letter from London

No Short Corners 05 April @ 07:39 AM EST
At Wembley this week with 85,000 others I watched David Beckham slip further off the MLS radar as England, mirabile dictu, recorded their fifth straight win to maintain a 100% record in their 2010 World Cup qualifiers, downing Ukraine 2-1.The LA exile looked sharp, slicing the Ukrainian backline open a number of times with the spinning crosses which have become his speciality in his twilight Click to continue reading...

I really have nothing to say in this post, apart from: I gotta have this Jeff Carlisle book! Yup. Those who know my club affiliation will be thoroughly unsurprised that I have read this book - but don't make the mistake of thinking the glowing endorsement that follows has been colored by the scarf I wear on Sundays. In a nutshell: one of the absolute premier soccer writers going, Simon Kuper, takes us inside the heart of a strange story. Click to continue reading...

Living the dream in Soviet soccer

‘Comrade Jim – the Spy who played for Spartak', is an amazing soccer story. Jim Riordan was not a spy but an Englishman studying communism in Moscow in the 1960s. Writing a dissertation on Russian sport, he made friends with Spartak Moscow's full back Gennady Logofet, who invited him to join a training session in 1963. Click to continue reading...
