Attention book nerds, there is a new American soccer tome on the block. It's called Soccer Made in
St. Louis and it's about the secret history of Toledo, OH's underground Polish badminton
leagues.
OK fine, it's about the obvious --St. Louis soccer-- and you should check it out.
Simon Kuper's 1994 book 'Football Against the Enemy' hit just the right note in
English-language football literature just at the time the English game was beginning to open up to
the world.
The sports-travelogue cum cultural study tapped into a widespread desire for intelligent and
wide-ranging football writing that had yet to be properly satisfied by publishers.

I'll admit it, I'm not a big reader. While back in the day I used to devour books of any topic,
nowadays I tend to sluggishly skim through books, mainly because the ones I read are uninteresting
to me. So, I decided that it was time to change that, and to get some books I would read, enjoy
reading, and learn something from.
Imagine an alternative reality where the USA victory over England in the 1950 World Cup was not
only noticed by the general public, it sparked a soccer boom in the United States.
In this reality, the top US professional soccer league, second in popularity only to American
football, not only follows the FIFA international calendar, it regularly develops, maintains and
retains world class talent.
Picasso without Velasquez. Family Guy without the Simpsons. Robinho without Garrincha.
Unthinkable? No. Sadly, we live in a world that obsesses over the present and increasingly pays lip
service to the past. Yet not Junito. Thanks to Youtube, old soccer books, and the art of oral
storytelling, I have turned his little world into a land of famous head fakes, jukes, goals, and
saves.
