Soccerblog 14 November @ 09:33 AM EST

From the NYT's "The Lede"

Coca Cola invokes the infamous 1989 match between Algeria and Egypt as part of their present ad campaign. Its all about marketing emotions and Coca Cola brings it up without any reference to the violent underbelly of that encounter.

Soccerblog 05 November @ 11:46 PM EST

I weep for the Newcastle fans who have to put up with this execrable name. How about MikeAshleydumbass@StJames'Park while we are at it?

I remember living in Miami when they renamed Joe Robbie stadium, home of Miami Dolphins as Pro Player Stadium which I thought was soulless but inoffensive.

World Cup could generate about $5 Billion for the USA

Soccerblog 01 November @ 11:24 AM EST

Nice bit of stimulus. 65,000 and 100,000 total new jobs would be created in the various host cities during the preparation and operation of the tournament in the year of the event. If the USA does get awarded the 2018 or 2022 World Cup, one of the goal will be to generate immediate tangible effects.

Soccerblog 30 October @ 08:46 PM EST

...and remembers some of it's predecessors fondly...
The technical side:A new PowerSpine technology is supposed to give the Predator X an unprecedented increase in shooting power of seven percent in comparison to its predecessor. Ball velocity tests in the adidas laboratory demonstrated that the new PowerSpine enables the Predator X to reach a velocity of 110 kilometres per hour which, when compared to other boots, makes a speed difference of almost three metres per second.

Arsenal: Enough talk of a "major trophy"

Soccerblog 26 October @ 12:09 AM EST

Talk of a bunch of self entitled players. This team will not get a "major trophy", or even a self titled piddling little one. For the second match in a row, Arsenal decided to "wing" it.

Wenger's memos of bravado do not seem to be filtering down to the players. At the very least, one would expect some positive response to such a bold and unequivocal statement.

Who will tell Maradona the Truth?

Soccerblog 07 October @ 11:39 PM EST
The sad part of it is that it has actually gotten to this point and he's still the coach. Argentina's messed up politics are so intertwined with its soccer, that even now Maradona's head is still sitting on his shoulders.
And the players? What can they say or do besides "supporting the coach"? Click to continue reading...

Turkish tobacco: Rooney was the spittoon

Soccerblog 18 September @ 11:20 PM EST

The Wayne Rooney flare up where he slammed his boot to the ground and everyone thought it was because he was reacting to being substituted. Juicy Carlos Tevez redux?

Nah, it turns out that he was reacting to Besiktas fans who were spitting upon him. Yes, Rooney was the spittoon for all that Turkish tobacco.

Meanwhile there is the MLS ........

Soccerblog 16 August @ 04:30 PM EST

Last evening I caught a bit of the RSL and Houston Dynamo game and I was reminded of the incessant verbiage of Max Bretos and Christopher Sullivan who have the attention spans of fruit flies. Their attention to the match waxes and wanes as they offer their diatribe on what the match should look like which bears little resemblance to how the match is actually playing out.
