If there's a bigger name in the history of English football I'm yet to hear it. Legends like Bobby

contenders...
How many senior team mates has Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs had during his 20 year career at
Old Trafford? It's a question that I've asked myself many times but the huge amount of time...
16 months after retiring as the Football League's oldest player at the age of 42, Manchester
United and Spurs great Teddy Sheringham is returning to football with Beckenham Town in the Bulmers
Cider Kent League the 9th tier of English football. So, unlike many professional athletes, he's
definitely not coming out of retirement for the money.

Well if you're going to start a series like this, there is only one person to start with in my
opinion, Sir Stanley Matthews, the wizard of dribble. Matthews is a name that will always be
mentioned as one of the greatest footballers of all time, never mind a legend of the English
game.
The marathon of the Champions League Final is over, and what an ordeal it was. Frankly I'm
embarrassed by what I witnessed. Embarrassed because of the lack of sportsmanship shown by both
sides. Embarrassed because this was supposed to be the final that provided an entertaining example
of what English football can be.
The New Yorker has an article on Tim Howard who will be in the cross hairs in the upcoming match
against England, the second time in 60 years that the two sides are meeting in a World Cup.
The first time of course produced the 1950 miracle that was The Game Of Our Lives when an
unheralded US team took on the might of Sir Stanley Matthews and England and prevailed one to

SO who are Blackpool, the team I support... because next season you could see a team you have
hardly heard of and an invasion of tangerine on your TV.
Stoke once again have compounded the critics and not only avoided the dreadful "second season
syndrome", but actually improved their points and placing from last season. It's a fantastic
achievement for the club and its passionate and noisy fans. I have to say that as an away fan at
either the Brittania Stadium or the old Victoria Ground, listening to the Stoke fans regal you a
blast of "Delilah" is an experience you have to witness.
Butler-like, with my black coat and my serious frown so perfectly in tune that a violin bow

attention to the following items of note:

Legends of English Football by Paul Bestall gives us a timely reminder of the icons that emerged in
England while the sport still retained an innocent joy among its millions of followers.
Jamie Carragher was no doubt awash with adrenalin and relief when he claimed his team-mate Steven
Gerrard was the best player ever to pull on the red shirt of Liverpool. He had, after all, just
watched Gerrard destroy Napoli with such single-handed authority and power he might have been a
combination of Batman and Roy of the Rovers.
In 1991, some 30 years after the Ballon d'Or was first awarded to Sir Stanley Matthews, FIFA
commenced the awarding of their own award. The FIFA World Player of the Year.
The award uses a Borda Count system to tally votes. Simply put a Borda count
involves voters ranking their candidates in order of preference.

A message board posting reminds me that today, ex-QPR, Ivor Powell turns 92. Still active as a
coach, Powell was recently honoured by the Queen. Powell played for QPR between 1938 and 1948 (with
a big gap in the middle!) was awarded the MBE. See below for background. Also [Ivor

Apologies for the lack of posts; the wife and I are sick as dogs and life at TOR Towers is not
unlike that inside a leper colony. Except in the leper colony they probably still don't have to go
to work.
Hopefully I feel better soon so that I can make down to SoHo tomorrow evening for what's swiftly
becoming "Steve Nash's Soccer-Basketball Mutual Appreciation Society All-Star Rich Guy
Fest".
