Examining the state of MLS's youth development, Part 1
Heading into Year 4 of Major League Soccer's Homegrown Player Initiative, we are starting to see
real signs of progress. Here's part 1 of my look at the state of youth development in MLS.
What do you say to this?
Holy @#$%.
Incredibly, everyone from Samsunspor Turkish Super Lig survived and the team bus is the only
thing which netted catastrophic damage. And as evident from the video, no signs/warnings appeared
that, ya know, a train was steaming in.
Someone's likely to see a change in employment status for this.
Keeping up with the many moves that have taken place with regards to D.C. United's roster over the
last couple of weeks is no small task. Each day it seems as if United are releasing another press
release regarding a new player signing or the release of a player. Instead of posting each
individual press release here is a recap of the roster moves from the past week up to today.

Several Union players talk about preseason training at YSC SPorts last week. The team landed in
Orlando on Sunday.
Danny Califf, acknowledging that only he and Brian Carroll are the only players remaining on the
Union who are older than 27, tells MLSsoccer.

Viteslea Lavicka is leaving!
Well is he leaving or was he dumped? Guess it doesn't matter.
Has a manager in Australia, in Sydney, ever been given such an easy ride.
The media in Australia all write and tweet about the guy being a lovely bloke but what about his
coaching, how will he remembered?
Blackburn
Position 18th, 4-6-13 (18 points, -14 goal differential)
Away Record: 1-6-4, -6 goal differential
Recent Form: WLWDL
Last Meeting: Blackburn 4 Arsenal 3 (September 17, 2011)
Back in league action tomorrow as we square off against mighty Blackburn (hey, lately, any team
playing against us looks pretty mighty).
What a load of rubbish! Arsenal supporters are planning to put black bin-bags over empty seats
during Saturday's match against Blackburn to highlight dwindling attendances at the Emirates. One
point from their last four games has seen the Gunners drop to seventh in the table. A protest group
is now aiming to draw attention to [.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his regret at selling Ryan Shawcross to
Stoke four years ago, conceding that the decision to offload the promising center-half was down to
a preference to develop Gerard Pique at Old Trafford.
Pique has since returned to native Barcelona, leaving Fergie frustrated at the manner in which
Shawcross had to depart United.
Martin Rennie looks to have built an offensive juggernaut. (Photo via Vancouver Whitecaps)
With the news of Sebastien Le Toux joining the Vancouver Whitecaps on a trade today. It has to,
no, it must be pointed out exactly how stacked these Whitecaps are on offense.
Just look at these names currently on the roster (and in camp):
- Camilo
- Eric Hassli
- Atiba Harris
- Omar Salgado
- Darren Mattocks
- Davide Chiumiento
- Lee Nguyen
- Long Tan
- Sebastien Le Toux
- Etienne Barbara (not currently signed)
Holy smokes.
Most Spurs fans will be grateful for an early weekend kick off as a chance to get back to the
football after a mixed week at the club. Watford will host us in our fourth round FA Cup tie and
one player almost certain to feature is the versatile Jake Livermore.
Jake has appeared regularly in the cup competitions, even filling in at right back against
Cheltenham and has therefore underlined his potential to the club in more than one area of the
pitch.
Lets get the rant out of the way. Lescott should have been sent off for intentionally elbowing
Kaboul in the head, and Balotelli should have been sent off for intentionally stamping on Parker's
head. Turns out that the "loveable rouge" Balotelli who buys petrol for people, signs signatures
for kids at an impromptu visit to schools and so on and so on, is actually just a nasty little ****
who would stamp on a fellow professionals head.
The Arsenal winger Theo Walcott is, like Robin Van Persie, approaching the final year of his
contract this summer. Although all Arsenal fans are anxious that the Dutchman signs an extension to
stay at the Emirates, there is not the same sort of urgency regarding Walcott. The Englishman
started the season in excellent form but [.
David Beckham signs new two-year contract to stay with LA Galaxy, ending PSG speculation
Telegraph.
Former England and Man Utd midfielder David Beckham today signed a new two-year contract
with the LA Galaxy of the MLS, ending all of the bogus press reports linking him with every club in
the Western world and Greater Asia.
Hard to believe it but the Philadelphia Union are close to selling their biggest star, Sebastien
Le Toux.
The Philadelphia Union are preparing to sell star striker Sebastien LeToux to a European club.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of striker Papiss Cissé from SC Freiburg on a
five-and-a-half-year contract, and this is just fantastic news for Newcastle fans everywhere.

Let's be honest here, and I have said it before, the whole situation with the transfer saga of Gary
Cahill has us all wondering what the hold up could be. I cannot remember Chelsea agreeing a fee
with a club and then literally taking weeks to conclude the terms with the player. It's a sign that
times are a changing at Chelsea, or have they already?
George Mason University and the New York Red Bulls announced this week that former Mason soccer
player Jonathan Borraja has signed with the MLS club:

The result last night has really put the cat amongst the pigeons with Chelsea now sitting eight
points behind Tottenham in the Premier League. The remit for Saturday's game now is simple, we have
to win and get the three points and the performance doesn't matter. We have to get on a run of
results and keep picking up three points week in, week out and anything else will be a disaster!
Chicago Fire Rumor Mill: Pavel Pardo Re-Signs
Iván Cañada is reporting that the Chicago Fire have re-signed Pavel Pardo and he will be
playing with the team next year.
"Pável Pardo permanecerá en el Chicago Fire al menos para la siguiente campaña. El mexicano
apenas renovó su contrato con el club de la MLS.
Word has begun circulating that Chelsea are expected to close the signing of Gary Cahill in the
next 48 hours. More, after the jump:
English Recruits
So, this one looks like it'll finally be finished. The worst-kept secret of the winter is coming
to its final hours, after an apparent break-through in negotiations took place Sunday evening,
during which Chelsea representatives were able to reach a consensus with Cahill's agent.

Many of Spurs' fringe players have been linked with a move away from the club and generally
speaking, rumours about possible departures for the likes of Vedran Corluka and Steven Pienaar have
been met with a clear ‘no' from Harry Redknapp.
That hasn't been the case with Gio Dos Santos however and after the manager is believed to have
vetoed a last minute move in the summer, it now seems that he is finally prepared to let the
Mexican go.
First I just want to wish everybody a happy New Year and I hope everybody got home safe last
night. If you're reading this now then I'm also happy you're not suffering from a severe hang over.
Seriously, kudos! I managed to escape one myself!
In any case, with 2011 now officially over I thought it might be a good time to relive some of
the year's more interesting moments.

The 2012 Generation adidas class is a little more than half way there. Before Christmas we had
Darren Mattocks (Akron), Chandler Hoffman (UCLA), Andrew Wenger (Duke) and Sam Garza (UCSB) sign
their GA deals with the league. It appears one more can be added to that list in the form of UCLA
midfielder Kelyn Rowe.

While the economy in Italy lurches from one crisis to another, there is an export market which
shows no signs of a slump. Across Europe, it seems, there is a prized product of the peninsula
which never sees demand dry up. An unerring rule of the football market appears to have been
established: if you seek success and tactical acumen go out and hire a Italian coach.
Yu Darvish is the most sought after pitcher on the free agent market this offseason. The native
of Japan hasn't pitched in the MLB but he already has front offices drooling. After posting a $51.7

If Yu Darvish signs, his team in Japan the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters will get $51.

You know what they are going to do. You don't like it and wouldn't play that way if it meant 80
points a season, but that's what they are going to throw at us and if we're not prepared, it's down
to us.
I don't like it but I'm not going to go on about it because then I'll end up like Arsene
Whinger, always complaining about injustices that his precious little angels have to face when they
play those awful big boys from up north.
The Sun more specifically, English media in general is at it once again. Peep:
CHELSEA last night confirmed their players are under orders to involve Andre Villas-Boas
in their goal celebrations.
No words needed. Just Dave Chappelle and a microphone.
The two teams of Manchester unceremoniously crashed out of the Champions League on Thursday and
luckily for you Matt Pottinger has written a few brilliant words about it. Empires don't
collapse overnight, they crumble over time. The Manchester clubs limping out of the Champions
League group stages marks a footnote in footballing history.
Their Words To have the chance to play in the Premier League at a club like Aston Villa is
fantastic. I can't wait for the challenge. For me, I just have to step in now and do a job. Aston
