Beyond the nation's borders, Italian football has certainly faded into the background in recent years. Last night Man United striker Wayne Rooney pulled out of the England squad to play Belarus after picking up a calf strain. Rooney played the whole 90 minutes for England in their 1-0 defeat to Ukraine and there were no signs of an injury then.
