- S.League Match - Hougang Utd 2-1 Etoile FC (4/9/11)

Hougang Utd upstaged defending champions Etoile FC 2-1 at the Hougang Stadium.
In this rescheduled fixture, the Cheetahs took the lead through Vitor Borges in the first half
before Selim Kaabi leveled in the half.
The beauty of the Cup competition lives on in the RHB Singapore Cup as the "Final Four" - Etoile
FC, Home United, Albirex Niigata (Singapore) and Hougang United fought till the very end to see the
emerging of the Protectors and the White Swans for the 19th November date at JBS.

first leg fixtures of the "Final Four" saw both the Stars and White Swans agonizingly forgo their
lead in the dying moments of those matches to see their respective opponents - Home United and
Hougang United crawled back to level terms to square off the encounter.
Wasn't able to attend any of the Singapore Cup matches over the few days until today due to work
commitments and ultimately saw the lack of update of the blog until this.
As the result of the concluding matches played over the past few days saw the emerging of the
"FINAL FOUR" for one of the holy grails in Singapore football.
Now safely ensconsed in the Deltras hot seat, new coach Jorg Steinbrunner, formerly of Woodlands
Wellington, Sengkang Punggol, Etoile and Medan Chiefs, is wasting no time bringing in a couple of
familiar faces.
Former Woodlands and Medan Chiefs Abdelhadi Laakkad is a Moroccan striker who scores goals, as
opposed to Chamakh who is a Moroccan striker who gets pushed off the ball way too easily.
As I was filing my match report for the earlier 3rd-4th placing match between Home United and
Tampines Rovers that I wasn't paying much attention during the League Cup final match between
Hougang United and Albirex Niigata (Singapore).
But what I did realize was Canadian winger Jordan Webb was the man of the night for the wrong
reason when he came so close to end the trophy drought of the under-achievers in the dying moments
of the second half of the extra time, before agonizingly saw his spot-kick saved by White Swans'
keeper Yoshito Matsushita that gifted the Japanese their first ever title since joining S.
I know the general perception in Singapore is that their football is shite but then most of them
sold their soul to the EPL a decade back and pine for queen and empire once more.
But the SLeague continues to be one of the most exciting leagues in the region.
Not like Thailand where Buriram PEA had won the TPL before the season had kicked off, allegedly, or
Indonesia where much depends on outside factors.

Jorg Steinbrunner is not put off Indonesian football after his short spell with Medan Chiefs where
he was given the heave ho for refusing to accept interference in team affairs. The German who also
coached Woodlands Wellington and Sengkang Punggol is reported locally to interesting Divisi Utama
side Persikabo who are already looking ahead to the new season.
Tanjong Pagar are a club with a proud history. They were runners up in four of the first five years
of the SLeague and the one year they missed out on second place they won the Singapore Cup.
The 1980s were their time though, before the advent of the SLeague. They won the National Football
League twice, the old domestic competition at a time Singapore still competed in the Malaysia Cup,
and won the President's Cup on four occasions.
