Some readers might recall the blurb that was posted about the launch of the first episode of the
Pitch Invasion podcast last month. Pitch Invasion Editor and former Section 8 Chicago Chairman Tom
Dunmore interviewed the former head of Supporters Direct, Dave Boyle.
Boyle is currently preparing to travel to Portland for the Independent Supporters' Council
meeting.
On a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon a contingent of Fire fans about 150 strong returned to
Toyota Park for the Section 8 Chicago Annual General Meeting (AGM). While the Men in Red themselves
were in Florida for pre-season, Section 8 along with many other Fire fans also began preparations
for the upcoming 2012 season.
If you have been to a Fire game in the past few years, you have probably heard the steady pulse
of the bass drum coming from Section 8. The man behind that beat is long time Chicago Fire fan DJ
Racis. DJ has been a dedicated part of Section 8 for almost a decade. Among many other things, he
is infamous for running for every Section 8 board position at the Annual General Meeting.
Chicago Fire Soccer Club owner Andrew Hauptman opened up to a small group of reporters following
Thursday's partnership announcement at Quaker Plaza. Despite the fact that all of his official
business was already taken care of, Hauptman was still around after the media had interviewed
players, Frank Klopas, and MLS personnel.
If you just can't get enough Chicago Fire action with 17 home games, the option to travel to an
away game is always there. Section 8 Chicago, the Independent Supporters Association for the
Chicago Fire Soccer Club, has a part of their website dedicated to Away Trip planning and
discussion. Once the season gets closer, Section 8 is the place to go to purchase away tickets and
for some games, away game bus tickets that depart from Chicago.
Back in November, Major League Soccer revealed they are shifting back to an unbalanced schedule
for the 2012 season after using a balanced one for the past couple of years. Eastern Conference
clubs will play seven of their conference opponents three times each (21 total games) and the
remaining two conference opponents twice each (4 games).
Founded in 2006 by Tom Dunmore, Pitch Invasion remains the cream of the crop of independent
football writing on the internet. It has been packed to the brim with quality for five years, which
is precisely why a "Very Best of Pitch Invasion" book was compiled by Mr. Dunmore. As an Englishman
from Brighton who moved to Chicago to get his PhD at the University of Chicago, Tom has since taken
to MLS and even became the chairman of Section 8, the supporters group of the Chicago Fire.
Section 8 Tifo Build this Sunday 12/18 - Holiday Party and Virtual Food Drive Reminders
If you are handy with tools and even if you aren't, head on over to ChiTown Futbol (2300 S.
Throop) at 4:00 PM this Sunday, December 18th. Section 8 Chicago is working of those great tifo
displays all off-season long.
Chicago Fire games at Toyota Park are all done for the 2011 season. The MLS Playoffs roll on
without cf97 (the Columbus Crew and FC Dallas are already out so things are looking up!). There are
many changes and tweaks that will have to be made to the team before the sun rises on the 2012
campaign.
It's been over 24 hours since the U.S. Open Cup Final ended but after so much wind-up, there
needs to be some wind-down. Somel thoughts on the final separated by pressing topics and
personalities.

The legend grows.
- As you know, I'm a huge supporter of MLS fan clubs (with a special affinity for Chicago's
Section 8). Here's a great article from ESPN on the rise of the MLS fan clubs. I've also updated
the fan club links on the main page.
- Tell me if this sounds familiar, MLS based US defensive midfielder loses head, acts out, gets
sent off and puts team in bad position.
With the first positive impression of MLS on NBC from their promotion of it during Sunday Night
Football there can be speculation about how much they are going to run with it. Sure, MLS doesn't
have strong ratings (~300k viewers on ESPN2, ~70k on Fox Soccer) to merit strong promotion.
But there's a reason that NBC Sports will promote Major League Soccer in ways that the sport has
never been promoted before 2012.

The Fire played a good, competitive match yesterday against one of the world's best teams. In
fact, they actually controlled large parts of the first half and hung in there in the 2nd half to
put in a valiant effort. It was great to see Soldier Field so full for a game that involved the
Fire (61,308 officially in attendance).
Ahead of our game this evening, Guillermo Rivera from Chicago Fire Confidential has taken time
to answer a few questions for us.
Scott the Red: Are you excited about the game?
Guillermo Rivera: I'm excited about the game because it's an opportunity to have one of the top
clubs in the world come into Chicago to play against the local side but the feeling isn't one of a
big match since it's really not much more than a warm up for United and an exhibition friendly for
the Fire in the middle of the season.
The Chicago Fire may have a lot of trouble winning MLS Regular season games but the roots of the
proverbial tree are strong as the system itself churns out victories. First we turn to the Chicago
Fire U-23 PDL teamthat have two games left and are tied at the top of the standings with the
Michigan Bucks.

Kickoff for the Chicago Fire vs. New York Red Bulls Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal has
been changed to 5:00 p.m. CT due to a power outage at TOYOTA PARK. The match originally scheduled
for 7:30 p.m. CT was impacted by a severe thunderstorm that took place Monday morning and left over
817,000 customers in the Chicagoland area without power.
I'm on vacation this week so unless Big Name Player X signs with the league expect very little from
me other than BBQing, beach bumming and generally lounging around. Before I go though check out
this superb fan-made video on the Fire's prior U.S. Open Cup glory. Good stuff from the men & women
of Section 8.
A group of students at DePaul University created a film chronicling Section 8, the Chicago Fire
supporters group. It's a great film and hopefully we'll start to see more films like this about the
growing soccer supporters culture in the United States.

Marlin Kolev, Ethan Faure and Heather Eidson for Documentary Production 471 at DePaul University,

Monday's have kinda becoming "supporters' day" at FBM HQ and so it's with great pleasure we present
this documentary short about an American supporters group, Chicago Fire's Section 8.
The FBM can trace its origins back to Wisconsin and in our youth we took in many Fire matches.

There are some talented individuals jumping and singing in sections 116-119 at the Harlem end of
Toyota Park. Check out this rough cut of a film produced by Ethan Faure, Marlin Kolev, and Heather
Edison for a documentary production class at Depaul University.
Nicely done!

One of the best supporters groups in Major League Soccer have finally got some recognition they
deserve thanks to a video documentary produced about Chicago Fire's Section 8, which was created by
three DePaul University film students.
The senior MLS Chicago Fire team may keep drawing but that doesn't mean other Chicago soccer
teams aren't pulling off victories. Follow me after the break for the latest on the Chicago Fire
PDL's run in the U.S. Open Cup tournament and this weekend's playoff schedule for the Chicago Fire
U-16 & U-18 Academy teams.
In the off-season the Chicago Fire made the promise to Section 8 Chicago that if Section 8 had
over 800 season tickets before the season started, the team would cover the fan buses for the
Columbus road trip. The board, volunteers, and other friends of Section 8 all came together to not
only match that mark but get the Section over 1,000 season tickets.
The Chicago Fire set up the Wall of Honor in 2008 to honor the passionate fans that have helped
build the traditions of the club. Today on June 4th, 2011, the Wall of Honor will induct another
distinguished member, Al Hack.
June 4th Induction - Section 8 Chicago
"I am writing to let everyone know that the Chicago Fire will be honoring our dad/husband this
year by inducting him onto their Wall of Honor.
The best stories of Chicago soccer in the past couple of days are after the break. Victor Pineda
scores in Portugal, Jeff Crandall goes All-In with Jim Curtin, the deadlines for the Section 8
buses to Columbus & Kansas City are coming up, Fire Academy and PDL stories all after the
break.

Are YOU Going to KC?
I won't pretend to be an expert on the various MLS supporters have displayed over the years, but
I have to imagine that Saturday's nine-parter from ECS has to be among the most impressive. Best?
I'll let people that pay a lot more attention to that than me make that call. That Mario
Bros.-inspired one that the Chicago Fire's Section 8 did last year was pretty cool (although I
still don't get the relevance).
The Chicago Fire supporters have finally admitted they have a rivalry with the Columbus Crew on
a new website imploring fans to travel to Crew Stadium to relive the glory of the last good Fire
team in 1998:
You're invited to come and help us renew a real regional rivalry with years of
history.
The Chicago Fire are currently facing flight delays and cancellations getting out of O'Hare
International Airport. The team was originally supposed to depart all together (as they customarily
do) but that flight was cancelled around noon. Team Communications Manager Brendan Hannan had to
leap into action to get the team on three different flights.
As the title suggests, we have over 30 links covering everything from the upcoming Section 8
Watch Parties, the Fire practicing in the community, Chicago Red Stars news, FIFA bribery
allegations, MLS Cup in Los Angeles, and the list goes on. It's your latest Chicago Soccer
Smolderings.

Section 8 Watch Parties for May 2011
The Fire are out of town for two games in a row in the middle of May, but Section 8 Chicago has
planned some great watch parties to help meet your Fire (and beer) needs.

of them haven't returned their questionnaires yet (you know who you are!).

Section 8 Chicago will hold their monthly board meeting at 7:00 PM tonight at the regular spot;
The Abbey Pub at 3420 W. Grace Avenue in Chicago. There are a couple items on the agenda and some
Section 8 news after the break including a new high mark...
Before getting into the Section 8 board meeting, HTIOT wants to congratulate them on breaking
the 1,000 season ticket holder mark.
The Chicago Fire are traveling to Colorado to take on the Rapids this weekend so that means Fire
fans across the land are getting together to tune into the action. Your Watch Party Roundup is
after the break and it leads off with a new watch party out in West Chicago.
A Section 8 fan has alerted us to a new watch party at the Cairo Bar & Oasis Cafe at 2009
Franciscan Way in West Chicago, IL.
