Only a couple more clubs left to preview here for the expansion draft. Now we turn our attention
to a previous expansion club, one that has set the standard for all expansion clubs to come, the
Seattle Sounders FC.

Everyone knew going into the 2009 season that the new kids on the block would make a splash.
Just the kind of splash the league needed in some folks eyes. The Seattle Sounders FC came into the
year not as a typical expansion club.

Add another award for Zach Thornton on the season. Today the league named Thornton it's Comeback
Player of the Year. At the same time the league also announced Fredy Montero as the Newcomer of the
Year.
Montero was one of the league leaders in goals scored this year. His 12 goals on the season blew
away any other newcomer in that category.

The 2009 MLS regular season saw overall average attendance drop to an average of 16,037. Down from
last years 16,459. It did, though, see a new record for attendance set by the expansion Seattle
Sounders FC, who averaged 30,897 over the course of the season. Here are the averages of all the
teams in the league this year.

One more weekend of action and we will be in the conference finals here. One club is already in
and three others will move on this weekend. After last weekend's play the pressure is on a couple
home teams to rebound while one just has to keep on doing what they do best in front of their
fans.

The second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs has the two higher seeds in each conference hosting
their opponents from last week's match-ups. In the four matches from last week, the home teams
either tied or won leaving the seeded favorites with work to do if they hope to advance to the
conference finals.

The playoff version of the SuperClasico got off to a bang with a 2-2 draw. (Getty Images)
Some could say the results we saw in the first week of the playoffs were fairly expected. The
SuperClasico ended in a draw that I think most folks expected to get; Real Salt Lake found a way to
get a win over the Crew at home; Seattle and Houston battled it out to a scoreless draw; and maybe
the only real shocker of the weekend was the Revs beating Chicago 2-1.

What was Pat Onstad thinking? How could he lose his cool so suddenly in the most important game
in the Dynamo's season? A dangerous cross came through the penalty area, just out of his reach, and
continued over the byline. Sure, replays show Fredy Montero obstructing the goalkeeper, but not in
any way dangerously.

In a match that featured intense physical play, defensive dominance and a near-brawl, the
Seattle Sounders drew 0-0 with the Houston Dynamo on Thursday night at Qwest Field. Seattle
defender Patrick Ianni, a last-minute replacement in the starting lineup, came closest to scoring
by hitting the crossbar, but the home side also needed a few clutch saves by Kasey
Keller to salvage the draw.

The Major League Soccer playoffs began on Thursday, October 29, 2009 with the Seattle Sounders
FC hosting the Houston Dynamo. It was a sold-out and very loud crowd of 36,000 at Qwest Field in
Seattle for the match. Here's a full recap of the match along with video highlights.

Houston visits Seattle in MLS Cup playoffs
Our reward for enduring through 32 weeks of regular season matches is a fascinating final four
in the Western Conference playoffs. While the Chivas USA versus Galaxy doubleheader in Los Angeles
stacks up to be a tough defensive struggle for both squads, expect fireworks from the Houston
Dynamo and the Seattle Sounders FC.

If you've been anywhere near Major League Soccer this season you will have heard of the Seattle
Sounders FC, the league's newest club. Not so much for what they've done on the field--this being
MLS most clubs do pretty much the same thing--but for the attention they've attracted locally.
The team is a massive hit in the Pacific Northwest, where it has become a pop culture phenomenon.

The Major League Soccer regular season is finished and the playoffs are starting this week. It
was an interesting regular season which included new franchise Seattle making the playoffs and
leading the league in home attendance. Other clubs such as the New York Red Bulls struggled all
year and were the worst team in the league.

second straight season WVH got to participate in the league's media vote for the season awards.

I'll have to admit some awards were tougher to vote on than others but I tried to span the
entire season's body of work as much as I could for these awards.

For most folks out there the Coach of the Year debate is a three person race. Depending on the
how the final week goes we could include one or two others into the discussion.
Some coaches have lead their clubs from loads of draws early to the top of their conferences,
one has lead an expansion club to the playoffs for the second time in league history, while others
have just done what they always do.

The Major League Soccer Power Rankings for Week 31 are here with not many changes at the top.
The Columbus Crew, Los Angeles Galaxy, Houston Dynamo, and Chivas USA are in the top four spots.

rest of the rankings are very close as there are a number of playoff spots left going into the last

Chivas USA and Seattle Sounders FC both have guaranteed themselves a spot in the 2009 MLS Cup
Playoffs. They are joining defending champions Columbus Crew along with Houston Dynamo and LA
Galaxy.
That leaves 3 positions up for grabs on the last weekend of the year. Those 3 spots that are up
for grabs will have 7 teams possibly still alive to grab one of them.
