Farewell To White Hart Lane

Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of my first visit to White Hart Lane. Spurs beat Sheffield United 2-0 with goals from Greaves and Saul. It's kind of the club to lay on a celebration for me. Join me why don't you.

My second match was nearly the FA Cup Final. This was the final home game before the FA Cup Final.

Spurs: Bottlers Can Bore Off

Half a dozen beginnings to my NLD blog and no endings. Writing enhances my pleasure and understanding of watching Spurs, this time it couldn't add a thing. One of the great days at the Lane, treasure it. Wrap up the memory in the softest tissue paper, tie the box with navy blue and white ribbons and keep it safe.

Belief and Faith and Fight.

Bill Nicholson's words ring White Hart Lane as a forceful reminder not of faded glory but that Tottenham Hotspur stand for something which transcends winning and losing. They are a call to arms for fans and players alike, where inspiration from our past becomes aspiration for our future.

Those hopes, that ambition will come with us from old ground to new.

Semi-final? Bring Them All On As Son Leads the Way

So the FA Cup is an irrelevance, a tiresome interlude between the real business of busting a gut to not win anything in the League. Yeah right. Nobody at White Hart Lane yesterday recognises that description of a competition still dear to the heart of football fans. Full-bloodied, no respect for status, both teams going out to win it and a distinct edge in the air.

Mane A Tear Has To Fall But It’s All In The Game

Last May Southampton came to White Hart Lane and deflated Spurs' end of season celebrations with a 2-1 victory, arguably the best performance from an away team that year. Midfield grafter Steven Davis scored both goals but the star was Sadio Mane. There were rumours at the time he was going to a bigger club but I couldn't see what the fuss was about – until then.

We Suffer With Spurs, Now Go Again

Random thoughts. Not incoherent but no coherence. Chaotic floods of emotion on the day, the aftershocks still carooming around my head the morning after. It's a semi-final, I was there so don't ask me what happened. To the uncommitted, one of the best semi-finals of recent years. To us, 90 minutes of Everest peaks and ocean-bottom troughs.

Kane The Master As The Future Calls

Ledley King, Spurs captain and leader, introduces himself to our new signing Edgar Davids, who is sitting quietly in the training ground canteen. Davids shakes his hand, looks him in the eye. There's not greeting. His first words are, "Can we win anything?"

Ledley told this story at the SpursShow live event before Christmas.

The Agony of Winning

A minute left and the ball drops from the sky. My eye has been drawn left following the ball as Middlesbrough mount a late, final attack. So it turns out has the Spurs back four. It falls to 14, unmarked, who appears suddenly it seems, but he's been waiting there a for a moment or two, just as Boro had been waiting for a decent opportunity all game.

Spurs Are Diamond Fabulous

For something in which so many invest so much commitment and emotion, football is remarkably fickle. We fans put everything we have into supporting our team, yet they let us down more often than not. We arrive in hope, leave in disappointment. Modern football is even harder to love. The cost, the travel, the time, the distance between club and fans.

Spurs Sweet Victory Up There With the Very Best

Last night my heart nearly burst out of my chest, I was so proud of my team. Spurs took on the champions-elect and outplayed them in every aspect of the game. Two headers from Dele Alli either side of half-time, put away with the power and finesse of a master amidst the frenzy of this derby . He's a natural.

Praise Be to Hugo’s Knee. All Hail Wanyama’s Toe

For the second league game in succession, Spurs toiled against well-organised and determined opponents, failing to score or, worse, seldom seriously looking as if they would. The defence did their bit though, so another clean sheet, another point and still unbeaten but there's an infuriating itch in a spot that you can't quite reach.

Spurs Have Individuals To Thank For A Point As The Going Gets Tough

Spurs had every reason to be optimistic as they went to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. With confidence high after good league form and that fine away win in Moscow, Pochettino was calling this a must-win game. Not really but it was a welcome statement of assertive intent.

We could have won it in the first half but by full-time we were hanging on grimly, grateful for a point but rocked back on our heels by our failure to take precious chances or defend as a team.

Kick Anti-Semitism Out of Football. But Don’t Start With Spurs Fans

Last week I went to a seminar on anti-Semitism in football. Over a couple of hours, we heard from representatives of the Jewish community, journalists, the chair of Kick It Out and a Jewish footballer, Joe Jacobson who currently plays for Wycombe Wanderers. Ranging beyond Britain and the Premier League, it revealed the scandalous inaction of governing bodies in Britain and Europe.

A Good Week For Pochettino. And For Spurs. Same Thing These Days

Tottenham On My Mind at related • 0 views

Mauricio Pochettino expresses himself in the dressing room rather than in the media, then he lets his players do the talking for him. It's an old-fashioned attitude from a thoroughly modern manager and long may it be that way. When he does speak, and he has been more forthcoming in press conferences over the past few weeks, he gives voice to the intensity and passion that fire his footballing imagination, recognising in the next breath that the club means as much to him as it does to supporters.

Spurs, Wembley and Fears For The Shape of Things to Come

Tottenham On My Mind at related • 0 views

This has been a decent week for Spurs fans. Two thumping victories, one of which was the most one-sided Premier League match ever, statisticallyat least. The 8 goals were the product of a return to the flowing attacking football that was a feature of last season's success yet has often eluded us this time around.

Winks Melts Hearts of Stone

Tottenham On My Mind at related • 0 views

Modern football's greed and rampant consumerism threatens to drive fans away from the game they love but if any of those departing paused to look back over their shoulder, Harry Winks' goal celebration on Saturday would melt the hardest of hearts. Janssen's fierce shot was beaten away by the keeper and up Winks popped to thump the bouncing ball home from close range, whereupon he dashed joyfully to the touchline and into the arms of the manager who had given him his chance.

Spurs Roll Back The Years To The Bad Old Days

Tottenham On My Mind at related • 0 views

Those of us of a certain age are fond of rolling back the years to the glory glory nights, where memories are rich and warm, where the lights were bright but none shone as brilliantly as the stars in all white. Against Bayer Leverkusen, Spurs went back in time to a reality most of us prefer to shift out of the way to gather dust in a dark corner, the cupboard under the stairs of the mind.

23 Days, 7 Games – Spurs Next Challenge

Tony Pulis comes in for his fair share of criticism but when it comes to Tottenham, he gets it right. It's as if he works towards these two games each season, the defensive drills peaking in time for Spurs. I imagine the dressing room, a hush descends as the players hang on their manager's every word.

Thoroughbred Spurs Ease Into Top Gear

Games such as this give context to progress. Tottenham battled through a tight opening quarter then turned on the style to dominate as Stoke were routed. Spurs' stuttering start becomes a gradual progression through the gears. Unbeaten after four games, chances now being made and taken, players easing their way into the groove.
