The Screamer in Sudan

Football Is Coming Home 19 November @ 05:08 PM EST

In case you missed the goal of the World Cup playoffs. Here it is. Antar Yahia's screamer in Sudan.
Relive the goal. Relive the celebrations. Be in no doubt: This is for 1982. This is for the players with the peppery hair and tears in their eyes. This is for the players who were robbed.

Don’t write them off; Barcelona are still the best in Europe

SoccerLens 26 October @ 10:52 AM EST

What a shocking couple of weeks it had been for the Catalans.

They have torn through all and sundry in La Liga up until their hosting of Almeria at the Camp Nou on October 4th. They may have come away with the result but it's a sign of the times that ONLY a 1-0 win for Barcelona is considered a bad performance.

Brian Potter: A Life In Professional Football

Twohundredpercent 25 October @ 05:51 PM EST

Today, October 25th, is the fifteenth anniversary of the second and most famous of the three appearances of Brian Potter's senior football career, and this site has very kindly indulged me by allowing me to write a tribute to the great man. You've almost certainly never heard of him, and mention of his name usually makes people think of Peter Kay, but no, it's not that one.

Writing this crap can have an effect on the soul. It's a sorry state of affairs when the highlight of the season thus far has been a riot.
There has been precious little to cheer. Any cause célèbre (Cole's screamer against tottenham) has swiftly been negated (Cole's mesmeric through-ball to Defoe), and the only home win, albeit against Millwall, was a defeat until the 87th minute. Click to continue reading...

Torneo Apertura 2009: Round 7 goals

Hasta El Gol Siempre 05 October @ 05:58 PM EST
The goals from the seventh round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura are online now, and they include some crackers. Watch out in particular for Pablo Toranzo's screamer for Huracán against Racing, and Juan Román Riquelme's equaliser for Boca against Vélez which was a far better goal than the improbable 40-yard header Martín Palermo scored [. Beşiktaş’ wings clipped again.

Turkish Football Report 30 September @ 01:34 PM EST

Beşiktaş would travel up to the cold confines of Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Looking to rebound from a disappointing loss to Manchester United in match day 1 of the UEFA Champions League, the Black Eagles needed some sort of spark to rejuvenate their Champions League campaign. The question was which Beşiktaş would show up, the league version, or the team that gave Manchester United a run for their money before losing?

Goals of the Week: Giornata 3

Some nice goals this week. We're still very early into the season, but two possible goal of the year candidates were scored this weekend. Samuel Eto'o's strike vs. Parma and Giandomenico Mesto's screamer vs. Napoli are joys to behold. Goals of the week after the jump.

RoM Reacion To Spurs Victory

Republik Of Mancunia 14 September @ 04:30 AM EST

Like a lot of reds, I was fairly aprehensive about our trip to White Hart Lane yesterday, given that they were yet to lose a game and Jermaine Defoe is in great form. Whilst Spurs' opposition teams before this weekend haven't been world beaters necessarily, they have seen off Liverpool, and every one knows that this is the year they are going to win the league again.

Man Utd for the title. Ha, don’t make me laugh, they didn’t beat us we beat ourselves

Avenell Road 30 August @ 04:47 AM EST

A fixture at Old Trafford so early in the season was a good opportunity to show that we had learned the lessons of last season. It was regarded as our first real test of the season and judging by the fixtures we've had so far I would have to agree.

The focus of our new style of play is our work rate and what we do without the ball.

Match Report: Barcelona 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

We're having mixed feelings about this match. On one hand, Barca were victorious, and we've won the UEFA Supercup: after also securing the Spanish Supercup, this marks the best cap-off to the splendorous yesterseason, as well as a great way to kick off the coming one; and just an all-around spirit-lifter for the team and fans. Burnley owner Brendan Flood has revealed the club failed to sign up a young Michael Essien as club policy prevented them paying his £60-a-week wages.

Athletic Bilbao - 2, Barca - 2

All About F C Barcelona 17 August @ 02:29 AM EST

FC Barcelona looks like they will be al set to add their first silverware of this season at Camp Nou next week after securing a 2-1 away victory at Sam Mames. With two away goals and a goal lead, it looks pretty unlikely that Barca will falter in winning the title. Athletic Bilbao went ahead towards the end of the first half but second half strikes from Xavi and Pedro secured Barca a deserving victory. Click to continue reading...

Pre-Game: AIK vs. IF Brommapojkarna

US AIK 07 August @ 02:28 PM EST
I've described the derbies against our true antagonists Djurgården and Hammarby as the Battle Ryales of Swedish soccer. A derby against Brommapojkarna never truly reaches the same levels of anticipation and hysteria. This is a instead a game that I've dubbed the Novelty Derby. It's a novelty because it's a rather new derby as Brommapojkarna is only playing their second season ever in Allsvenskan. Click to continue reading...

Match Report: Barcelona 2-1 LA Galaxy

How huge did this match turn out to be? The Rose Bowl was nearly completely filled, with over 93,000 filling the stands – the largest attendance ever in the United States since the World Cup final in the same stadium back in 1994. FC Barcelona: are we epic, or are we epic?

FC Barcelona eased past the challenge post by Al Ahly in their second match of the Wembley cup. The 4-1 victory but wasn't enough for them to grab the inaugral Wembley Cup. Gameday 5 Recap - GFC v. Rai Internationals...

The Grimsby Football Club 23 June @ 08:30 PM EST
I always struggle with the late games. 815 on a Sunday night is really no time to be playing football. I'm still digesting dinner, I'm winding down from a busy weekend of standing in the rain coaching 13 year old girls, I'm really just about ready for bed if I'm honest. So whether I liked it or not, I still had to drive way the hell out to Heritage Green and get to work. Click to continue reading...

Lass and Higuain - Florentino’s Chance for Redemption

SoccerLens 21 June @ 08:40 AM EST

The second coming of Florentino Perez should not be judged on what big name stars he brings to the Santiago Bernabeu. His ability to attract the world's best has never been an issue of debate. Neither has his ability to generate capital for the club. Rather, any lessons the man claims to have learnt since departing the Bernabeu in disgrace back in 2006 should be judged on how he treats the less famous, yet equally important, members of the squad.

Race on for Lyon hotshot?

According to reports Manchester United are locked in a transfer battle with Real Madrid and Chelsea for Lyon's in-demand forward Karim Benzema, after Carlos Tevez is set to leave Old Trafford after rejecting a new five year contract. From what I've seen of him in the Champions League and in the French league he could certainly cause plenty of problems in the Premier League.

“I’ve Told Fabio To Take Welbeck To World Cup”

Republik Of Mancunia 01 June @ 05:46 AM EST

Danny Welbeck has made a good start to his Manchester United career, from the screamer he scored in front of the Stretford End on his league debut to the further twelve games and two goals he finished the season with.

Sir Alex Ferguson has predicted that Fabio Capello will be taking Welbeck with his England squad to the World Cup next summer, which certainly indicates our manager expects to give Welbeck a lot more time in the team this season.
