USSF TOA decision
It has been widely reported that the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) will be meeting this
weekend in Seattle, Washington to make a decision concerning the breakaway TOA league and their
request for a new 2nd division league in the US. Of course parties from the USSF and Major League
Soccer (MSL) (who are often one and the same) will be in Seattle for the MLS Cup final which takes
place on Sunday evening.

As the Henry business slowly and painfully dies away, I just want to cap off my soccer journalism
post from Wednesday. I finished with offering one or two reasons why the traditional long-form
journo model may in fact not be dead, and speculated on what the introduction of an across the
board pay-wall for newspaper on-line editions would mean.

Yesterday, Toronto FC midfielder Dwayne De Rosario was named into this year's MLS Starting XI. It
is the dynamic Scarborough native's fourth time on the year end honours and the third club he has
done it with. Most notably, his appearance is the first for any TFC player.
While De Rosario is enough of a fan favourite, mostly from being local, it is fair to say that his
star has yet to rise to high enough levels in Toronto.

Three more World Cup spots will be sealed on Saturday, and with the tournament held in the same
continent, desperation will be at a maximum as African qualification finishes. Two spots are
already held by the continent's two best teams, as Ghana and the Ivory Coast have both safely
secured a place in the World Cup.

In the Champions League Group Phase, considerable analysis is possible at the midway stage as all
the teams have played each other once.
This allows proper analysis of form and the fundamentals, and allows us to determine if any of the
events are 3 for 3 or 2 for 2 scenarios (teams sharing the points over the two games).

Things took a wild turn in the MLS playoff race last night as the team with the least amount of
points heading into the day, Real Salt Lake, was the only team to end the night with a playoff spot
clinched.
Real Salt Lake got into the 2009 edition of the MLS Cup Playoffs in the same exact way they got
into the 2008 postseason -- by defeating the Colorado Rapids in the last game.

With two playoff spots remaining and six teams in the hunt, things could get a little dicey in
MLS this weekend.
Colorado (40 points) is the only team that controls its own destiny and if they get a win at
Real Salt Lake tonight (9 p.m. on FSC) they will clinch the 3rd or 4th seed in the Eastern
Conference.

I'm not going to lie, I've given up on trying to figure out how the different scenarios for this
weekend's matches need to play out for Toronto to make the playoffs. The numbers are too much for
me, so I'm going to just sit back and hope for a TFC win against New York and everyone else to
lose. I guess that's not entirely possible, but at least we know that if Toronto wins, they have a
much better chance of making it in than if they lose!

Seven teams, three berths, endless combinations.
The tiebreakers for MLS playoff berths go in this order:
1. Head-to-head (points per game if more than two teams tied)
2. Overall goal difference
3. Overall goals scored
The list below shows all seven teams, their final opponents (all times ET) and their head-to-head
records (U.

One might think with only two games remaining (for all teams except Chivas USA, who has played 27,
and New York, who've played 29) in the 2009 season, the playoff picture would be fairly straight
forward. If you happened to think this, however, you'd be wrong - things are not very clear at all
and the standings are tight.

The Rapids just sent out a press release with the header, "A Special Message From Conor Casey."
Swear to God, I thought it was going to be him rapping, "Tell me, how my ass taste?"
Also sent out today - a press release reminding the world that nine teams are still vying for the
playoffs.

That is the good news heading into the final WC qualifier against Uruguay on Wednesday
night.
Argentina's WC qualification does not depend on the result of another game.
Argentina has complete control over its World Cup qualification.
Even if Argentina gets a tie against Uruguay, Argentina will still have a chance to qualify to
the World Cup no matter what happens in the Ecuador game.

Here we go, two hours left before kickoff.
Argentina is playing its next to last WC qualifier today.
Argentina will have yet another different lineup today.
There are different mathematical possibilities and different qualifying scenarios. But I do not
have the mental energy to take all of this on.

By the end of the weekend, we'll probably have a much better idea of who will joining the
countries who have already qualified for South Africa, who will be in the play offs and which (if
any) of the major footballing powers will be watching England on TV. Here's a quick guide to the
various scenarios that will be played out around the world today:

It all depends on your point of view, either as a partisan or a neutral observer, but there are a
couple of scenarios that would settle everything in the Hexagonal or leave everything in doubt
until Wednesday night. We are practically down to four teams that will finish within any of the top
four positions.

I haven't written about too many comedy songs here. That's because they tend to wear out their
welcome if you listen to them too much. When I interviewed Jonathan Coulton three years ago (was it
really that long ago?), I asked him about that, and he spoke about the importance of creating
two-dimensional scenarios and using subtlety for that very reason.

In 55 years of competitive football, Liverpool have never lost a game against Hull City. Let's hope
this record continues at Anfield this weekend.
There is no reason why Liverpool should not emphatically win tomorrow's game, is there? At the very
least, last season's infamous home draw must not be repeated.

Barcelona started off their Champions League campaign away from home against Italian Champions
Inter Milan with a 0-0 draw. It is fair to say that Barca had the best chances to win the game
creating three great opportunities within the first 10 minutes. However they were unable to break
down a resolute Inter Milan defence.

I knew it was too much to ask for for our players to get through an international break without
getting injured, and I was right. Andrei Arshavin, who had to come off injured with a groin injury
against Manchester United, rushed back too early to play in yesterday's game against Wales. Guus
Hiddink, being the loyal Chelsea man he is, made sure Arshavin played all 90 minutes, and of course
he re-injured his groin, and will now miss our next two matches the league fixture against
Manchester City and the Champions League match-up with Standard Liege.
