The United States gets a chance to avenge its most shocking loss in the history of the Gold Cup
tonight when it takes on Panama at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
Just eleven days removed from the 2-1 defeat the United States are a completely different team,
in terms of attitude and tactics. Bob Bradley made excellent adjustments to his squad for the game
against Jamaica on Sunday, switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation and inserting both Alejandro Bedoya and
Sasha Kljestan in the midfield.
A few observations from tonights 4-0 drubbing at the hands of the World Champions.
The first half showed how much Dempsey, Donovan and Michael Bradley mean to the U. S. The
midfield was a mess, particularly Jones and Edu. Robbie Rogers did not make an impact as well. I
thought Sasha Kljestan was the best of the lot in the first half.
Good Afternoon! A scorcher here in Red Bulls land and the Red Bulls are in action, yet again, @The
Cathedral of Football. I still haven't come down from Wednesday's high. I'm hoping Red Bulls
haven't either and that they come out to crush "The Goats" Chivas are at the bottom of the Western
Conference standings, with 10 points, and will be looking to get a result here.
As previously noted, being a Vice President of FIFA is one sweet gig.
Even when you're not being bribed to the eyeballs in return for your World Cup venue vote.
Or when you're making untold millions of dollars on World Cup tickets you grabbed by the thousands
(and never paid for) and then bundled with overpriced air fares and hotel rooms and had your wholly
owned travel agency peddle them to desperate soccer fans.
US's Strategy
Once again in the tournament, Bob Bradley made surprising lineup and formation changes. Landon
Donovan and Freddy Adu replaced Sasha Kljestan and Juan Agudelo. Donovan and Adu played as left and
right striker respectively as Bradley reverted to a 4-4-2. Throughout the match, Dempsey and
Donovan swapped places.
In front of a sold out Rose Bowl and a largely pro Mexican crowd, the Gold Cup Trophy will be
handed out Saturday night. This is the final everyone wanted from the start. Not only a spot in the
2013 Confederations Cup is at stake, but also bragging rights between the rivals is on the line.
US Strategy Bob Bradley elected to change his tactics after playing a 4-2-2-2 in the three group
matches. Landon Donovan was unavailable to start after arriving late from his sister's wedding.
Consequently, Sasha Kljestan and Alejandro Bedoya were brought into the starting XI to replace
Donovan and Chris Wondolowski.
Few quick thoughts on United States 2-0 victory over Jamaica;
Credit to Bob Bradley for making the difficult and as it turned out correct decisions. Sitting
Donovan due to his early morning return from his sisters wedding was the correct call and a gutsy
one by Bradley. In addition, trotting out a 4-3-2-1 allowed the United States to control the
midfield by spreading out the Reggae Boyz, which also opened up a ton of space.
Canberra United turned in one of their best performances of the season yesterday as they downed
Canberra United reserves, otherwise known as Newcastle Jets, 1-0.
Great to see such loyalty in the women's game with players changing clubs every season in some
cases. Talk about fan loyalty! Kara Mowbray, Sasha McDonnell and Thea Slatyer were just three
Canberra turned Jets who I used to swear undying loyalty towards.
So apologies again for the sporadic posting that has become a trademark at GirlsWithGame. But here
is my compromise, in the lead-up to the W-League, a monthly wrap of all the happenings and then
from November a more consistent focus on the W-League. Heading into next year's FIFA Women's World
Cup, it's going to be a cracker of a season.
So it's finally here, although in such a short 10-week season, it's more like it's already here. I
hold out for a future with at least 14-rounds, so each team can play each-other. But that aside,
let's look at the 2009 Grand Final first, because it's going to be a cracker. While Canberra United
did deserve to be in the inagural decider in the 2008/09 season, the grand final against Roar was a
bit of a fizzer just because injuries robbed United of a real chance to compete.
So the really interesting news will be who the ins and outs are today for each team, particulary
with two suspsended players to replace (Sasha McDonnell at Brisbane and Alesha Clifford at Sydney),
but before then here is a bit more gossip.
At Sydney, Linda O'Neill still seems to be suffering from the flu, see this story
on fourfourtwo where it doesn't look likely she will be able to play much part.
So the details are here for the semi-finals weekend of the 2009 Westfield W-League. With Sydney and
Canberra to meet on Saturday followed by the Mariners and Brisbane on Sunday.
SATURDAY, SYDNEY FC (1st) v CANBERRA UNITED (4th) at Toyota Park (or Shark Park), 3pm.
So Sydney FC claimed the league championship and what is seen to be the easier opponent in
Canberra.
Enter Sasha McDonnell, the first professional woman player who caught my attention, somewhat by
accident a few years ago. One of the reasons I came across her was she's a Brisbane girl, so I was
mightily annoyed last year when she signed with Canberra.
Sasha (second from left) just after her goal
The way I discovered she had signed for Brisbane this season, believe it or not, was Wikipedia,
which also had the W-League table updated before the official A-League site.
So this afternoon the second season of the Westfield W-League will kick off, the same eight clubs,
but new players and coaches everywhere. But shall we just take a minute to think about the first
season? Here girlswithgame takes a look at its top five moments from season 2008.
5. Canberra United's late rush to draw with Perth Glory in Round 6.
Yay, the new season of the W-League is just two sleeps away and finally, the squads are here.
So who's in and out? Probably won't know exactly what will happen until the team's line-up but
certainly some interesting last minute signings. Here are the interesting parts of the previews,
game by game.
Brian "The Danish Sensation" Nielsen made his MLS debut on Saturday for RBNY less than 72 hours
after arriving in country. He started at left wing, showing a fair amount of speed and skill by
getting of a few nice crosses early in the game and even got a shot on goal. But questions still
remain about the former Danish Youth International, chief among them "Who is his favorite
progressive house/trance DJ?
A short weekend in Major League Soccer saw a couple things take place. The Columbus Crew inched
closer towards their second straight Supporter's Shield trophy (and another birth into the CONCACAF
Champions League) and Toronto FC's stumble nearly towards elimination.
So it's the final that I, apologies to Mariners fans here, I think everyone wanted to see when
Brisbane Roar come down to Sydney to take on the Sky Blues at Shark Park next Saturday.
So how did they get there? A sole goal to defender Karla Reuter was the difference and in the end,
a very similar story to yesterday.
A few times over the past few years I've noted the obvious word play, "The Roar purred." I guess it
would have been used more if it was true more often, but even when they were really getting it
together, like toward the end of last season, it didn't quite work as a metaphor.
Yesterday against Perth at Ballymore the Brisbane Roar Women purred.
While waiting for a friend outside Jalan Besar Stadium, I saw a car slowed down along the way.
"Tiket bola mana?" asked the driver of the Johor licensed plate vehicle in Malay, as he would like
to know where could he buy the tickets for the 2014 World Cup Qualifier match between Singapore and
Malaysia.
While I respect Beyonce—she did produce the best music video of 2009—I always get a sense of
foreboding when the Philadelphia Union take the field in their Sasha Fierce outfits. The matte gold
jerseys and socks just don't fit the team or city's personality: too fussy and ostentatious. And
when the team's play doesn't sparkle [.
Sasha Kljestan and Anderlecht aim for a second straight Eerste Klasse win when they travel to Stade
du Pays de Charleroi on Saturday to face Royal Charleroi SC.
The NSC Minnesota Stars fell to the very hot Tampa Bay Rowdies Thursday night by a score of 3-1.
Tampa came out-passing Minnesota early and it wasn't long before they lashed one by goalkeeper Matt
Van Oekel who received his first start in a Stars uniform. The goal came on a defensive break down
which has been a problem for the Stars in recent games.
The Side: The Goats had a decent 2009, but they once again failed to collect
any hardware. Plus, they lost Preki to the cursed Reds, so 2010 isn't exactly looking like the year
they will finally break through. Sure, they still have the silky smooth playmaker known as Sacha
Kljestan (who probably leads the league when it comes to having his named misspelled), but I just
don't think they will make a run this year.
I have struggled with whether I want to continue writing for The Offside. My recent posts
indicate my frustrations, which may appear to be a little acrimonious. The truth isn't as harsh as
I make it out to be, honestly.
A few days ago I contacted the powers-that-be and proposed a new page for The Offside.
Last week we covered that Portsmouth players had not been paid, and I asked whether Sulaiman al
Fahim actually had the money to buy the club.
The answer was no, as Sulaiman al Fahim today sold Portsmouth to Saudi property magnate Ali al
Faraj. Ali al Faraj is a familiar name to Pompey fans as Portsmouth executive Peter Storrie had
told former, former, Portsmouth owner Sasha Gaydamak that Al Farai was interested in buying the
club.
