Over a one month stretch, Sammy Ochoa and Seattle Sounders FC will face three teams from Mexico.
Two of those matches are merely preseason tuneups for the more significant two-leg CONCACAF
Champions League matchup against Santos Laguna. For Ochoa, in his first preseason with Seattle, he
has a little extra motivation to succeed against teams in a league where regular playing time and
success were limited.
While the marquee game of the weekend, Sunday's African Cup of Nations final between Zambia and
Ivory Coast, is not being widely televised throughout the United States, there is still plenty of
top-rate action to catch.
This weekend has the potential to be a landmark one for a number of Americans looking to make
their mark on the European game.
Week six of the Mexican Apertura is going to feature some key games in the fight to stay in La
Primera. Some teams all of you may be familiar with are in really bad shape while others are
mid-table waiting for that spark to put them at the top. After the break, we give a short preview
of when and where you can watch the games this weekend along with a Fire/MLS connection where
applicable.
Looks like we have some catching up to do. The Seattle Sounders have sold about 14,000 tickets
for the March 7 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against Santos Laguna. With a month left
before the game, that's a perfectly respectable total, but it's also about 25,000 fewer than
Toronto FC has sold for their quarterfinal against the LA Galaxy the same day.

Landon Donovan's time with Everton is nearing its end and while he may want to make an impact in
all of his remaning games with the club, this weekend's match might be at the top of his list.
Everton are set to face Chelsea in a match that will pit Donovan against the likes of John

table after five games, with Morelia in 9th. Gomez has been coming off the bench for Santos,
subbing on in the 76th last week in a win over UNAM Pumas, not playing in the 3-1 win over Tijuana
the week before that, and subbing on in the 73rd in a 1-0 win over Jaguares on January 21st.

Continuing their preseason tradition of a Community Shield match to raise funds for charity
partners, the Seattle Sounders today announced that their opponent in the Feb. 29 7 PM match will
be Jaguares de Chiapas of the Mexican Primera. In a new twist, the match will be free and seating
on a first-come, first-serve basis, but the club will be accepting donations at the door.
Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna stay on top, Michael Orozco and San Luis continued their slide
towards the bottom, and Jose Torres was involved in a thriller with Pachuca.
Now with a stunning 1-1 draw in the books against the Vancouver Whitecaps the Seattle Sounders
announced five preseason scrimmages in their "Florida" phase of training. Florida in quotes because
the key note match will be against Atlante FC behind closed doors in Cancun, Mexico on February
22nd at 4PM Pacific.
Sigi Schmid's Seattle Sounders FC took the pitch in anger for the first time. While it may only
be preseason anger, the number of cards (10 yellow, 1 red) and the puncture wound on Mike Fucito
indicate that emotions were high and form was off. While the game ended with both the Vancouver
Whitecaps and Sounders netting just one goal apiece, the point of these matches is not to win, but
to prepare to win meaningful games.

A year ago, the Seattle Sounders opened their season on March 15. This year, they will

The Seattle Sounders have played in three U.S. Open Cup title games and three MLS Cup playoff
series, but the match against Santos Laguna in the CONCACAF Champions League on March 7 may be the
biggest match in franchise history. Not to be too much of a shill, but if you're enough of a fan of
this team to be reading this blog, you probably should plan on being at Century Link Field that
day.

Tigres are the new champions of Mexico following their 4-1 aggregate victory over Santos Laguna
in the Torneo Apertura (Opening Championship) final.
Tigres had finished in third place in the regular season table with a record of seven wins,
seven draws and three defeats from seventeen games, before going on to defeat Pachuca CF and
Queretaro FC in the play-offs on their way to the final.
