Expansion Draft List: DC United

WVHooligan 16 November @ 06:41 AM EST

Luciano Emilio and DC United have a lot of question marks. (Getty Images)

The 2009 expansion draft is only a week and a half away here. Today we move forward in our look at each club's potential protection lists with DC United. The Black-and-Red are still without a head coach so don't be shocked if somethings here could change depending on who takes over this club.

RIVER OR LIFE: Attacking midfielders

DCUMD 08 November @ 07:54 PM EST
We've covered the forwards, and we've covered the front office. Heck, our front office results actually have been 100% correct so far, with Tom Soehn leaving the team and Kasper and Payne set to return. We'll have to wait a while to find out if our forward results are correct, but in the meantime, let's see what everyone has to say about our attacking midfielders. Click to continue reading...

DCU News: Payne Talks, Soehn Waits, Players (Move?)

The Offside - DC United 28 October @ 10:07 AM EST

As always, Mr. Unprecedented Access, Steve Goff, has a sit down with Kevin Payne and Tom Soehn over on his blog. Some big quotes...

"We don't want to play like Colorado or New England, which most of the season sat with eight or nine guys behind the ball. How many people go to watch Colorado or New England play?

Award 9: The Etchy

DCUMD 24 October @ 05:44 PM EST
By defintion, the Etchy Award goes to DC United's most valuable player. The winner of the award should be the player who United can least afford to live without, and who gives the team the best chance of winning. I'm going to present this award a bit differently because I want to give you more choices and less bias. Click to continue reading...

MLS game #30: DCU @ KC Wizards

Behind the Badge 24 October @ 09:50 AM EST

The playoff scenarios are mind-boggling.

It is actually possible for United to find its way into the MLS Cup playoffs regardless of win, loss or draw tonight, but the likelihood is very slim if the Black-and-Red come away with anything but a victory in Kansas City. The Wizards cannot make it to the post-season, but will certainly come out hoping to put on a show for their fans in the last home game of the year.

MLS game #29: DCU vs. Columbus Crew

Behind the Badge 17 October @ 10:06 AM EST

By now, everyone knows what need to happen tonight - D.C. United needs to win to keep its playoff hopes alive.

The team will have to do it without several key players, as Bryan Namoff (concussion), Josh Wicks (dislocated shoulder, MCL sprain), Santino Quaranta (ruptured plantar plate), Ben Olsen (red card suspension) and Chris Pontius (yellow card accumulation) will all be watching from the sidelines.

Benny Award 7: The Harkesy

DCUMD 16 October @ 08:41 PM EST
By definition, the Harkesy Award should go to the DC United player who has been the strongest leader for our team this season. On-field leadership is important, but for this award, it isn't everything. And that would be evidenced by the fact that Ben Olsen won the award last year after playing only 15 minutes. Benny Award 6: The Freddy

DCUMD 13 October @ 08:50 PM EST
By definition, the Freddy Award goes to the biggest story for DC United this year. This award should go to the individual who has created the biggest stir around DC this season. The award's namesake Freddy Adu wasn't only the biggest story in DC when he was on the team, he was also the biggest story in MLS. Click to continue reading...

USSoccerPlayers 13 October @ 07:30 AM EST
DC United forward Santino Quaranta will miss several months recuperating from surgery on his left foot. Quaranta ruptured his plantar plate during practice on Friday. Quaranta sidelined for 4-6 months

Behind the Badge 12 October @ 03:58 PM EST

The club received bad news this afternoon when it learned Santino Quaranta is out for the season and will likely be sidelined for a total of 4-6 months after rupturing the plantar plate in his left foot's first metatarsal. The 24-year old injured the foot at training on Friday and was evaluated by a specialist today.

America, where football players have to get naked to get noticed

DC United lose to Chivas USA, 2-0

DCUMD 04 October @ 10:45 AM EST
This was clearly a match between two teams going in different directions. Chivas was starting guys like Maicon Santos, Jesus Padilla, and Yamith Cuesta - all who joined the team in August and have already claimed starting jobs. They haven't been afraid to bench their veterans like Razov, Galindo, and Marsch and have instead sought out better players. Click to continue reading...

DC United win vs Marathon, 3-0

DCUMD 24 September @ 10:38 PM EST
This win was exactly what we needed. Nothing will inspire confidence in a team fighting for playoff position like a multiple goal victory in which we were clearly the better team.
The offense is clicking, and oh yeah, that's 3 shutouts in our last 4 matches. With a makeshift backline at that. Click to continue reading...

CCL group B game #4: DCU vs. Marathon

Behind the Badge 24 September @ 08:31 AM EST

United faces a near must-win tonight at RFK Stadium when it faces Honduran side CD Marathon in its fourth CONCACAF Champions League match. After last week's win in Trinidad & Tobago over Jabloteh, D.C. finds itself in third place in Group B, three points behind tonight's visitors. A win for the Black-and-Red would draw the team even in the standings and put it in a position to advance into the knockout stage of the tournament heading into the final two games of group play.

CL: Gomez PK Propels United To Road Victory

MLS Daily 16 September @ 05:18 AM EST
Needing a win to avoid falling completely out of touch in Group B of the CONCACAF Champions League, DC United rode an early Christian Gomez penalty kick to a crucial road victory against Trinidadian side San Juan Jabloteh on Tuesday evening. The result was especially encouraging, considering that DC was missing several regulars through injury or a decision to rest, including Jaime Moreno, Santino Quaranta, Fred and Josh Wicks. DC United lose to Seattle Sounders, 2-1

DCUMD 12 September @ 09:05 PM EST
Feels like I just wrote that same headline 2 weeks ago. I don't mean to try to use this as an excuse, but it's worth pointing out that the last match Seattle played was here in DC on 9/2. In the mean time, United played two other matches during that week and a half that the Sounders were resting.
After a terrible start from United, I felt similar to the way that BDR felt earlier this week - like this match could have easily gotten out of hand. Click to continue reading...

Football Americana Week 25: Revs stall at home

DC United tie at FC Dallas, 2-2

DCUMD 06 September @ 12:20 PM EST
So my DVR inexplicably taped nothing but a black screen, and calls to Comcast expectedly got me nowhere (their proposed solution: turn it off and turn it back on). So this reaction will be based solely on MLSnet highlights and comments in the Insider.

Seattle Sounders Add First Silverwear as 2009 US Open Cup Champions

Inside Minnesota Soccer | Inside Minnesota Soccer - Uniting Soccer Fans in the S 03 September @ 07:25 AM EST

The Seattle Sounders defeated DC United 2-1 last night in one of the better US Open Cup Finals in recent history.

The pace of the game was fast, the attacking was decent with plenty of chances and there was excellent goalkeeping as well. The 2009 US Open Cup Final seem to have it all.

DC United win at Chicago Fire, 1-0

DCUMD 29 August @ 10:55 PM EST
This is the best our team has looked in quite a while. DC United just worked harder in this match, which is great to see. We won most of the 50-50 balls tonight, which has been rare the past few months. The team's first win against an MLS opponent since 7/18 couldn't have come at a better time.
The only thing I didn't like about our performance was the number of fouls given in close range. Click to continue reading...

DC United lose to Toluca, 3-1

DCUMD 26 August @ 11:42 PM EST
I had my doubts about this lineup going in because it just seemed way too defensive. I'm in favor of continuing with the 4-4-2 formation for the duration of this tournament, but my vision of a 4-4-2 involves attacking wingers, and maybe a creative attacking central midfielder. McTavish and Allen aren't really what you think of in terms of attacking wingers, and Andrew Jacobson isn't really the most creative CAM either. Click to continue reading...
