Blanco to the rescue againNow that the Hex has drawn to a close, we know the three teams that are moving on to South Africa,
and which one still has some work to do. CONCACAF always gets a bad rap, from within and without,
in regard to its level of play. Regardless, this has been the most competitive hex since its
inception in 1998: 5 teams were still alive with 2 matches to go.

Tal es la importancia que le dan a la Selección de El Salvador en Washington DC, Virginia y

The U.S.'s 1-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago was hardly the only news coming out of CONCACAF
tonight, as two other (and equally important) World Cup Qualifiers took place. Mexico-Honduras was
the high-profile match of the evening and Mexico took the honors, defeating the Hondurans 1-0 at
Estadio Azteca.

With two relatively straight forward fixtures this week, the United States National Team is
almost guaranteed to be leading the Hexagonal after this international break. But this will
guarantee nothing, as the one time magic 15 point mark for World Cup qualification from CONCACAF is
almost sure to be exceeded by four nations this cycle.

Carlos Costly proves his last name right against the Ticos
With Honduras thrashing the Ticos, 4-0, Los Catrachos move ahead of the US on goal difference.
The Ticos retain the top spot with 12 points. Mexico find themselves in fourth place.
The Ticos are looking a bit vulnerable here and will be looking to regroup in San Jose for a
huge encounter against Mexico next month.

DCÂ United and Toronto FC are both on the road tonight for pivotal second-leg matches in the
CONCACAF Champions League and both have some serious work to do.
Toronto FC meets the USL-1 Puerto Rico Islanders tonight (8pm, Fox Soccer Channel) and must
erase a 1-0 first-leg deficit and do so in Puerto Rico against an Islanders squad that is coming
off a semifinal run in last year's Champions League tournament.

In the spirit of DC United recently, I'll be saving myself for more important articles in the
future by doubling up my previews for the next two matches so I can take this weekend off. It's
really a good time for rest too, as the previews are pretty simple affairs to break down. DC will
get hammered in Houston and drop the deuce in San Salvador three days later.

I don't look too far outside my window much - not since Simon Le Bon told me it was a world of
dread and fear. But let's look at the CONCACAF standings for a second.
World Cup Qualifying - CONCACAF Fourth Round
Code: GP W D L P Costa Rica 5 4 0 1 12 United States 5 3 1 1 10 El Salvador 4 1 2 1 5 Honduras 4 1
1 2 4 Mexico 4 1 0 3 3 Trinidad & Tobago 4 0 2 2 2 What it will look like Wednesday, if Honduras
wins:
Code: GP W D L P Costa Rica 5 4 0 1 12 United States 5 3 1 1 10 Honduras 5 2 1 2 7 Mexico 5 2 0 3 6
El Salvador 5 1 2 3 5 Trinidad & Tobago 5 0 2 2 2 And, if there's a draw between Honduras and
Salvador:
Code: GP W D L P Costa Rica 5 4 0 1 12 United States 5 3 1 1 10 El Salvador 5 1 2 3 6 Mexico 5 2 0
3 6 (unless Mexico beats T&T by more than 3-0) Honduras 5 2 1 2 5 Trinidad & Tobago 5 0 2 2 2 .

So, um, yeah... Where does Saturday's win over Honduras leave us. Much like with the draw in San
Salvador, the character, heart, grit, etc., seemed to return but another bizarre team selection and
almost certain destruction in the Confederations Cup seems to overshadow the win in my mind.

awful loss to Costa Rica.

Mexico's lackadaisical performance thus far in the World Cup qualifying has most fans of the Tri at
Defcon 3. Poor showings on the road and at home, coupled with the marked improvement made by teams
in the region have put the Tri squarely on the hottest of seats. Of course that can all change
tonight if Mexico manages to take the full 3 points at San Salvador tonight.

It was all smiles and sunshine when Mexican President, Felipe Calderón, visited Mexico's
training centerConcacaf has become more of a home team region, which makes points on the road now worth their
weight in platinum. Not one team has yet to win on the road in the Hex. Mexico hasn't even won on
the road in CONCACAF since they beat Guatemala back in 2005.
