Much is made of the global appeal of football, with FIFA justifiably proud that there are more
members of its organisation than there are of the UN: over 200 countries enter the World Cup
competition.
What's perhaps not quite as well known is that many of these nations who enter quickly exit the
competition and it's not surprising that many of these countries are Caribbean islands or
micro-states.

What a game! What a colossal group effort! We won and in dramatic fashion against the second
ranked team in the world! Where do I start this post?
This is one of those few times in life where it feels so good to be wrong. I tipped 2-1 to the
Netherlands before the game started and to be honest after such weak showings against Hungary, San
Marino, and Finland I think I was justified in doing so.

Ukraine, the world's number one ranked team, Holland stuffed perennial losers

Spoilers: Everybody came out of this set of internationals fit and unscathed and ready to take
on Stoke on Saturday. Except perhaps for Martin Skrtel, though any damage he picked up is going to
be of the mental variety. In any case, September's international break is over and done with, which
means no more worries about Liverpool players getting injured in borderline meaningless games.
I might as well start with the bad news because there is plenty of it at the moment. We are
currently tied at 18 points with Hungary for the second place in group E and while Hungary have
only one game left (and that is Finland at home), we have two to go and one of them is Finland away
and the other is the Netherlands at home.

Holland's Euro qualifier against San Marino was a bit like shooting ducks in a gallery.

Robin Van Persie managed to finish a game for the Netherlands for a change without succumbing to an
injuries and scored four goals in the 11-0 win against San Marino. However the goals did not come

With the drama of the past few days behind us, focus begrudgingly shifts towards the meaty part
of the international break and a full slate of matches for Liverpool's internationals. It'd be nice
if the end of the window was closely followed by a match for the club it's not a completely
new-look squad, but it has the feel of some sort of fresh start, and a chance for renewed optimism
after a relatively disappointing end to the summer's activities.
On this coming Friday, the second of September, the Swedish National Football Team has a date
with destiny. Over a period of ninety minutes, interrupted only by a 15 minute half-time break, our
to be or not to be at next years European Championship will be decided. We will be meeting a very
game and up for the fight Hungary who also have to win to have any real chance of making it to the
summer party.

The first international of the 2011 fall is nearly upon us and I wanted to have a quick look at
whom we are bringing, the opposition, and what the meaning of this game is anyway. For starters we
are playing Ukraine for the second time this year. Don't get me wrong I am not a big fan of playing
the same teams over and over in a year or two, but since Ukraine is a team of just about the same
quality as ourselves, it will be a good test of our preparedness for the important games coming up
in September.
