Soccer outside Europe has gained in popularity in recent years, with David Beckham making a high

latest FIFA tournament, the African Cup Of Nations, has failed to catch the public's imagination.

With the New Year come and gone, it's time to start looking forward to the 2012 season. Soon the
training camp will open and all of the Timbers players will once again resume training ahead of the
2012 season. More than that, though, there are still more than a few open positions available on
the Timbers roster so it will be interesting to see who comes in and who goes (if anybody).

The Cameroonian Football Federation banned captain and star forward Samuel Eto'o 15 matches for
his role in a players' strike last month. Eto'o can appeal the punishment over the course of the
next two weeks, but if it is upheld, the ban could signal the end of the 30-year-old Eto'o's
international career, considering the length of the ban and the bad blood between player and
federation.

One report that grabbed my attention yesterday was that of Didier Drogba apparently being offered a
deal to join Samuel Eto'o at Anzhi Makhachkala.
Now it may not seem like a headline maker but when you hear that he was offered MORE MONEY than
Eto'o to move there (approx £10m per season) and he has apparently turned it down, I find it
staggering.

Just under two months after shocking the soccer world and signing for Russian side Anzhi
Makhachkala, Samuel Eto'o is being linked with a return to Inter Milan — on loan.
Eto'o left the Italian giants in late August, but when the Russian Premier League season takes a
break in January and February, meaning Eto'o could potentially return to Inter for a Serie A as
well as Champions League fixtures.

Roberto Carlos recently hinted at Anzhi's interest in more world-class European players.The former
Brazilian full-back and current joint-manager of Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala has revealed he
would like to bring Arsenal center forward Robin Van Persie to the club during the January transfer

Just four games into the new season isn't really time to judge the season end trophy winners,
but any season that starts with players considering strike action is bound to affect initial

and making him the highest paid player in the world, Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala are
planning a couple other eyebrow-raising transfers.
