It's about time we shone our Jeu du Jour spotlight on Auxerre as we look back on Week 11. The only
team never to be relegated from France's top flight started off this season as though that might
all change, but after a defeat in each of their first three games, they now find themselves
unbeaten in eight and up to fifth in the table. Click to continue reading...
Two weekends ago, Liverpool thought they had reached the turning point of what has been a
frustrating campaign on all fronts. A 2-0 win over Manchester United seemed to silence the doubters
and catapult them back into Premier League contention. Now, though, after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Fulham (and the League Cup loss to Arsenal), it's back
to panic stations for Rafael Benitez and his men as they look to resurrect their Champions League
campaign. Click to continue reading...

French Ligue 1 have become one of the strongest leagues in Europe during the last few years and
it is constantly justifying its reputation. Round 10 this season was supposed to bring us the
biggest derby of French football but the OM-PSG derby was postponed because two
PSG players had contracted the swine flu.
France doesn't have a lot of local rivalries like England for example, since Lyon-Saint Etienne
and Lille-Lens do not really portray all the elements of the derby. However, this country has a
derby between Olympique Marseille and Paris Saint Germain, a fierce rivalry that
doesn't go such a long way.
Ligue 1 continues to delight and mystify in equal measures. Last weekend's matches saw Bordeaux
lose for a second successive match after such a long unbeaten run, and new leaders Lyon lost too
but remained on top of the table. Lyon's lead is down to just a single goal, never mind points. Their main challenger in second spot
is Montpellier, a team that finds itself back in the top flight for the first time in five years
and looking determined to make it six. Click to continue reading...
There were plenty of upsets yesterday, could we see more today? On paper Manchester United, who
have struggled as of late, could be expected to slip against CSKA after a long trip to Moscow but
CSKA has not been performing well either. I am not expecting a feast of football from that match
and the real drama lies elsewhere in the schedule.
French Ligue 1 returns into action after the international break and Olympique Lyon are
leading the title race at the moment. Bordeaux and surprise package
Montpellier are just behind the leaders, while Marseille and PSG are slowly falling
behind. Monaco and Lorient are also exceeding expectations at the moment, while Toulouse, Nice and
Lille are not doing as well as last season.
Hi Insiders, what with the International break there is not alot happening on the news front
today. Couple of things through firstly Arsenalinsider has moved to it's new home alongside our
other sites in the "Insider" brand. You can still find us at www.arsenalinsider.com and now also

As we've been reporting recently on Jeu Du Jour, each of the main contenders for the Ligue 1 title
this season have been losing their unbeaten records one by one. Going into last weekend's games,
only two were left and one of those, unsurprisingly, was the seemingly unbeatable Bordeaux.
Unbeatable, that is, until Saturday when Saint Etienne, of all teams, handed out a 3-1 beating at
the Stade Geoffrey-Guichard knocking the French champions off the top spot. Click to continue reading...
Saint Etienne started this season just like they ended the last one, with poor
performances and they quickly found themselves in the relegation zone. Seeing that the team have
taken the wrong path, the club management decided to act and brought a couple of very good players
in the dying moments of the transfer window, but it was Argentine striker Gonzalo
Bergessio who stole the spotlight in the last few weeks and he certainly looks like the
man that can turn things around for Les Verts (The Greens).
In a weekend which saw a total of 35 goals scored in 10 fixtures, this really was an occasion
for the strikers rather than the defenders of Ligue 1! Â Several matches finished with more than 4
goals scored between the two sides and there was a minimum of two goals scored in every game
played.
You know what they say about title-challenging teams: if you can play badly and still win, you've
got what it takes to be the champions. The question is, does the reverse apply for
relegation-threatened teams? Grenoble are challenging the theory at the moment, that's for sure. Having played five and lost
five so far this season, they've played well more often than not and yet still won nothing for
their efforts. Click to continue reading...
Thomas Vermaelen may be Arsenal's sole purchase during the current transfer window as
Saint Etienne's valuation of star midfielder Blaise Matuidi differs from Arsene Wenger's, and the
Gunners' boss is not prepared to pay £8 million for the player he deems to be a new version of the
talismanic Patrick Vieira.
by CARL ELDRIDGE Arsene Wenger is anything but impetuous. So can someone explain why today's
papers are suggesting that the Gunners chief is ready to renew his interest in Saint-Etienne
midfielder Blaise Matuidi?
The argument is that because Cesc Fabregas has a hamstring injury, AW has realised just how
short he is of players who could be considered suitable replacements and so has put Matuidi back on
his radar.
Sometimes getting rid of your best player makes you better and other times it does not. But for
Lyon getting rid of striker Karim Benzema might have been the best thing that they could have done.
During the summer the super talented striker traded Lyon for Real Mardrid. The transfer fee was
priced at €35 million with the fee rising to as much as €41 million based on incentives. Click to continue reading...

The French Ligue 1 began this weekend with a full set of matches. Reigning 2008-09 champions
Bordeaux and runner-up Marseille were both victorious in their first matches while other teams
struggled. Overall, it's a long season and not much can be drawn from the first week of matches.
Here's a recap of Week 1, video highlights, and the latest league table.
Murmers abound: Arsene Wenger may be planning a move for old Arsenal stalwart Patrick Vieira.
This is either the perfect plan or a complete waste of time. I haven't figured it out yet.
The Vieira who once helped lead Arsenal through the glory days of trophies and titles could
be what the Professor needs right now.
Lucho Gonzalez injured his left shoulder in a pre-season friendly against
Saint-Etienne.
Lucho is expected to be out for 3 to 4 weeks.

This transfer window is over for Lyon after the club signed Saint Etienne's Bafetimbi
Gomis for a fee which could rise to €15 million. The powerful striker
will sign a five-year contract with Gerland outfit and he is set to partner Lisandro
Lopez in newly shaped attack.
