Finally something to smile about……………………

Avenell Road 19 November @ 03:32 AM EST

Two bits of good news were announced yesterday, one is that Kieran Gibbs has not suffered any break to his ankle he just has some bad bruising and won't be out for long. I don't expect we will see him at the weekend, but back in time for The Chavs I hope. Silvestre ‘should' be able to cope against Sunderland on Saturday but The Chavs are a bit of a different story.

Club vs Country Crisis Averted: Cristiano Ronaldo Officially Out of World Cup Playoffs

WorldCupBlog 11 November @ 08:10 AM EST

This seems almost impossibly unimportant following the sad news of Robert Enke's passing, but Cristiano Ronaldo will now definitely miss both legs of Portugal's World Cup 2010 playoff vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (November 14th and 18th). The story had been steadily building into the club vs country smackdown to end all club vs country smackdowns, with Real Madrid insisting their player was injured and unavailable (and doubly so since said ankle injury is a direct result of C-Ron playing for Portugal last month when not fully fit) and Portugal maintaining it was there right to call up whoever they want.

Sad news from Germany this evening: goalkeeper Robert Enke of Hannover 96 and Germany committed suicide by diving under a train in the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge near Hannover. He was 32 years old, had won eight caps for Germany and would have been a strong contender for one of the goalkeeping positions in the German squad for the finals: he leaves behind a wife and an adopted eight month old daughter.

Sad news from the U-17 World Cup. Those damn Italians knocked out our brave young American team 2-1 in the second round.
Missing a penalty kick? Unacceptable. That kid is banned from the national team.

Like I predicted a couple days ago, and like he deserves, Chivas USA's Zach Thornton was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Click to continue reading...

News Round Up

The Offside - Bolton Wanderers 29 October @ 11:34 PM EST

First, and most importantly, there is some sad news for the Wanderers World. Our dear Jussi is retiring from his international career. His Finnish team failed to make South Africa 2010, and Jaaskelainen announced his retirement earlier today. He was first capped in 1998, and has earned 55 since. Jussi, pure class as ever, came out with this statement:

"I have considered this decision long and hard, and I believe that it is now the right time to give younger Finnish goalkeepers the chance to play on the international stage.
