Will San Jose lose one of their players in the expansion draft? (Getty Images)
Today is the final day in our expansion draft coverage/speculation/etc. as we look at three
clubs. First up this morning is the San Jose Earthquakes. Later on today I will have Seattle
Sounders FC and Toronto FC to round out the lists.

Ryan Johnson was one of the few bright spots for San Jose in 2009. (Getty Images)
It's hard to decline as a club after being an expansion team in 2008 but the 2009 version of the
San Jose Earthquakes did just that. They became the first team to lose more in their second season
than in their expansion season.

A very deep Chris Leitch free kick caught Chivas USA completely napping, Yamith Cuesta guilty of
letting Ryan Johnson stay all by his lonesome at the far post and head the ball over Zach Thornton
(who appeared partially out of position, too) for the 58th minute go aheqad goal.

It's a slow news week for the Dynamo so I'm piecing together some stuff.
The inaugural Charities Cup match versus Mexico's Monterrey is this weekend. Is anyone going? I
wonder how many starters will see action for this one. Probably not many considering Holden, Rico,
and Ching will be in Honduras with the national team.

Jeff Cunningham will have to continue his MVP form tonight in San Jose.
You want some playoff type drama? Good because tonight's midweek clash between San Jose and
Dallas offers just that. Win and continue on in a the little hope of reaching the playoffs, lose or
tie and you season is pretty much over.

Unless you are a die-hard New York Red Bulls fan or a San Jose Earthquakes fan, chances are you
missed their game last Saturday night, which means you probably didn't see Arturo Alvarez draw what
wound up being the match-winning penalty converted by Ryan Johnson.

San José Earthquakes sigue último en su división, pero volvió a ganar gracias al aporte de un
salvadoreño. Venció 1-0 a New York Red Bulls -ya sin Alfredo Pacheco- por un gol de penal de Ryan

This weekend had set itself up really nicely for DC United. After losses by Seattle and RSL, and
ties by Colorado, Chivas, and Toronto, DC United only needed a home victory against the worst road
team in the leauge in order to move into 5th place. But the underdogs continued to impress. Not
only did United lose, but they really deserved to lose.

There is a caveat to this post: we don't have it near as bad as Red Bull fans have it. True,
they have a new stadium coming, but that team is a disaster from top to bottom, with little hope of
immediate recovery. Now that I've cleared that up, this is a bad time to be a United fan.
The breadth of this experience was on display Sunday afternoon.

Just as the playoff race gets hot, the goals of the week get hotter. Something about a playoff
race that makes the goals just a little bit better if you ask me.
Order of goals: Jamie Moreno, Ramon Sanchez, Ryan Johnson, Sacha Kljestan, Juan Pablo Angel,
Dwayne De Rosario, Chad Barret, Brian McBride, Jeff Cunningham, Eddie Gaven, Fredy Montero, and
Shalrie Joseph.

And just with one weekend the playoff race really cleared up in my eyes. I may end up being
wrong about a team or two but for the most part I have a pretty good feeling about six of the clubs
that should be in the playoffs this season.

D.C. United coughed up yet another lead and allowed the previously winless on the road San Jose
Earthquakes to come into RFK and take away a potential playoff killing win over the Black and Red.
United has now lost two consecutive home matches after going the first 11 matches of the season
without allowing a loss.

The Rapids made their only appearance on ESPN this year on Friday night, and it will be quickly
forgotten by most neutral observers. A pretty lousy game that is pretty forgettable even for fans.
The game didn't start well, with San Jose getting an open look at Burpo's goal, only to put the
shot off the far post.

Imagine the array of emotions for Ryan Johnson on Friday night. The San Jose Earthquakes striker
scored his team's only goal in the eighth minute of a 1-1 tie against the Colorado Rapids. Then the
24-year-old committed the foul deep into extra time that produced a penalty kick for Colorado and
the Rapids' only goal.

Fantasy EPL 31 July @ 06:42 PM EST
It is a difficult time to be playing MLS fantasy as the NY Red Bulls don't play again for two
weeks. So one can't just load up on whomever is facing them. Though to be honest, that didn't
really work out so well for me last week. Cummings did get an assist, but Kimura came on as a sub
so he didn't earn the clean sheet points.

It was a dream start for D.C. United on Saturday. With a hectic schedule looming, a Christian
Gomez brace had United out to a 2-0 lead at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Missing
midfielder Clyde Simms through injury and Santino Quaranta still on Gold Cup duty, it was a
promising first 21 minutes of the match.

We had plenty of goals scored in week number 19 in Major League Soccer. A few PKs, own goals and
a lot of nice one touch shots. The best in some folks eyes will probably be the midfield bomb by
KC's Claudio Lopez though. I would be shocked to see another goal pass that one up for goal of the
week.

Well, that was hard to watch. After taking an early lead off a Christian Gomez brace, United let
in a goal by the Earthquakes' Ryan Johnson in the 36 minute, while a handball in the box in the

game (8/1 vs.

Here are my votes in the media balloting for the 2009 Major League Soccer All-Star team:
GOALKEEPER (1)
Kasey Keller, Seattle Sounders: Although he doesn't have the best stats in the
league, he's having the best year.
DEFENDERS (3)
Chad Marshall, Columbus Crew: Scores goals, shuts down opponents, plays clean.

I love a good holiday weekend. That's why these previews are coming today instead of it's usual
Friday timeslot. Even with the holiday comes loads of extras for me to be doing and sitting in
front of my laptop isn't going to be one of them.
After a couple weekends of SuperLiga play breaking up the flow of the season schedule the
majority of the MLS clubs are back in play this weekend.

Not as much to glean over on a Monday morning after a light serving of play on Saturday. The
Superliga provided some quality entertainment on the side, especially with Brian McBride's
scintillating finish for the Fire.
Surveying the rest of league play, a couple of draws, maddening red cards and poor defending
returned to mar the weekend.

...because that's what it looks like from where I'm standing! I'm sorry, Nick
Garcia, what was that you were saying? Nothing. Exactly. Perhaps if you concentrated a
little more on your defending assignments instead of mouthing off at other players pre-game, you
might not leave attackers wide open to head on goal.
