United's newest attacker should make his debut on Saturday

D.C. United takes on the Philadelphia Union this Saturday in their second preseason game, the first with the addition of attacker Yamil Asad. It will also give us the first insight into Ben Olsen's plans on how to fit Asad, Zoltan Stieber, Paul Arriola, and Luciano Acosta into an attacking trio, and that is before he decides how to structure his defensive midfield with Russell Canouse, Junior Moreno, Ulises Segura, Ian Harkes, and Chris Durkin.

D.C. United has a defensive midfielder around which they can build for years

Of all of D.C. United's midseason acquisitions, Russell Canouse was the one with the most mystery surrounding it. Paul Arriola was the big splash, Zoltan Stieber had the pedigree of a player who could reliably produce in Major League Soccer, Deshorn Brown was the MLS veteran, and Bruno Miranda was the flyer on a promising young talent.

This transfer window wasn't just a fluke

Stepping back for a second and looking at a hectic two weeks that saw D.C. United get attached to World Cup veterans (Nigel De Jong, Gary Medel) and club players with national team experience in Europe (Marcus Olsson, Krisztian Nemeth), they eventually "settled" on adding a Young Designated Player from CONCACAF with Liga MX experience (the United States' Paul Arriola), his US youth teammate (Russell Canouse, recently with Hoffenheim and Bochum in Germany), a teenager with caps for a CONMEBOL national team (Bruno Miranda), and a left wing with experience in UEFA competition (Zoltan Stieber) over the course of the last five days of the secondary transfer window.

D.C. United focuses on youth, potential with roster overhaul

No MLS team was busier at the tail end of the secondary transfer window than D.C. United.

Two players left the club while four new ones came into the fold. They took a roster filled with old, familiar MLS names on the wrong side of 30 and replaced them with younger players brought in from foreign leagues that many fans may not recognize right away.
