Anti and Syphoning: Pay TV option is good bargaining chip but you don't want it to be our only coverage

John: Watching the roar wasn't much fun Saturday
Informed Source: I'll bet. They seem to be in a big low.
John: Bob Malcolm caused 2 goals and looked like he wasn't even playing, so did Moore in the 1st 20 mins.
Informed Source: Malcolm may well know that he's unlikely to be part of the main mix from here on in. Click to continue reading...

Danny Tiatto: Same back to you mate!

Football in the Capital 04 October @ 03:47 AM EST
I saw you Danny putting your finger up to me on the big screen.
Well i did it back louder and longer.
Robbie Kruse v Tiatto and co, great stuff. Fozzie might not have liked it, but Bozzo loved it...me to.
Great game, particularly that first half, and great to see Danny Allsopp out of the Victory side. Click to continue reading...

Would a "PLAY-OFF" system sustain the league?

BoLASEPaKO - a simple view on Singapore Soccer 28 September @ 10:35 AM EST
Click on the "envelope" for a bigger view
Scribed this on the back of an envelope.
Please don't be confused by those "arrows" and the hideous handwriting (it was a scribble-on anyway), allow me to explain with some helps from the "wiki" pages on the subject.
As you can see for yourself on the top of the envelope, I scribbled "Top 8 (AFL)", while at the lower half of it, you should noticed the words - "Super League (RL)". Click to continue reading...

Celtic: Best away supporters in Brisbane.

Football in the Capital 12 July @ 06:03 AM EST
Well unique at least, and bring colour and atmosphere wherever they go.
31,000 turned up to see Celtic trounce the Brisbane Roar 3-0 today at Suncorp. And a Kiwi Chris Killen got two for the Celts.
And with Fulham and Wolves pulling in around 20,000 and 11,000 this weekend across the wide brown land clearly the Scottish Champions have slightly more fan power than the English Premier League clubs; no surprise there. Click to continue reading...

Man Utd: He's not Nicky Carle

Football in the Capital 04 July @ 09:56 PM EST
Man United lost Ronaldo, the freak goal-scoring machine. Let's face it, United aren't a one man team, but without him and his goals, no championships and no Euro finals in the last three years in my view.
So they've spent their money on who.
Michael Owen...and even he was free! Bet the fans can't wait to see Owen in that new Rugby League shirt. Click to continue reading...

Brisbane RFC: Bomber puts 'em back on track

A seat at the A-League 22 June @ 07:03 AM EST
I was concerned about Brisbane RFC announcing that it didn't need FFA money and was going it alone. To be honest, I liked the idea of a new major investor and new dollars and the prospect of a new direction. Perhaps a guest player.
However, more than the announcement that former Channel 9 sports commentor Chris Bombolas is to be the new Roar Chair was the photo. Click to continue reading...

Email-gate

A seat at the A-League 22 June @ 06:53 AM EST
For a none story this has had quite a life. Tim didn't help himself by ignoring the questions of the Socceroos major sponsor - FoxTel - after the Japan game. Then Mark Bosnich made matters worse by claiming solidarity with Tim for being betrayed by someone close to him. Then there was a supposed email from a Socceroo of 10 years - yeah right, just had to send it to loser NRL journo HQ eh? Click to continue reading...

The Confederations Cup - A (Very) Rough Guide

Twohundredpercent 13 June @ 08:52 AM EST

For some people, the end of the football season in years that end with odd numbers means a return to the real world. For two and a half months they become normal people, spending time with family and friends, allowing their sofas and their wallets to recover from the arduous few months that have just passed and giving every impression of being normal, well-rounded human beings.

Daily Telegraph kicking football: But why?

Football in the Capital 10 June @ 06:27 PM EST
What are News Limited afraid of? Some very strange articles are appearing out of that newspaper regarding football.
They, clearly, are deliberately running the game down, using non-football language and generally abusing anything non-Australia.
Pim is un-Australian, the Bahrainians players names are mocked. Click to continue reading...

Japanese newspaper in Sydney

Football in the Capital 10 June @ 07:08 AM EST
Interesting to see the Japanese national newspaper advertising at the ANZ Stadium last night...guess that doesn't happen in the AFL or Rugby League.

Australia off to the World Cup

Football in the Capital 06 June @ 10:03 PM EST
Great job Pim Verbeek and ignore the criticisms we're off to the World Cup and that is all that matters.
It wasn't that long ago this country and its sports fans would never have expected us to get there or have any real belief we could.
And this time we did it the hard way. 14 matches across Japan, Iraq, Uzbekistan and China to name a few. Click to continue reading...

Toffee For A Day!

Arsenal Insider 30 May @ 02:00 AM EST

Ah, FA Cup Final day. Love it! I'd love it a lot more mind if we haven't stood well and truly on our collective crank whilst wearing the spiked golf shoes against <?xml:namespace prefix = st1> Chelsea in the semi-final.

Still, we were second best on the day. I couldn't complain given our defensive errors.

Canberra: All codes united.

Football in the Capital 27 May @ 01:34 AM EST
Great to see a plan for a 26,5000 stadium, a football stadium, one with real atmosphere, close to the pitch, built for the future here in little old Canberra
And isn't it great to see a World Cup bid, unlike the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which will leave a legacy for football.
From the Canberra Times:
The second rectangular stadium would be purpose-built for soccer, rugby league and rugby union.

Sponsorship creep?

Football in the Capital 21 May @ 06:30 PM EST
From today's SMH:
Sponsorship consultant William Bourke of Sponsorship HQ predicted the sport (Rugby League) would face difficulties in keeping existing sponsors and attracting new ones.
"There are so many options out there for sponsors," Bourke said. "I think soccer and the AFL will be the primary beneficiaries, mainly because they are national sports that don't attract that level of controversy.

Young Aussies shine across Asia

Football in the Capital 20 May @ 06:15 PM EST
Watching Ben Kantarovski last night was awesome as the young Jets player strode across Asia.
I could see the Green and Gold shirt on this young man for years to come. Another gem I'm sure.
But I also noted the impact of Jason Hoffman, Brodie Mooy, Adam D'Appuzzo, and in recent games Sean Rooney and Marko Jesic. Click to continue reading...

Are we far from instant replay?

MIKE JACOBS 10 May @ 01:07 PM EST
After seeing their UEFA Champions League dreams come crashing down under referee controversy, Guus Hiddink feels that technology and instant replay should play a role.
Hiddink has seen sports such as NFL and rugby league successfully adopt video technology and he feels referees should be given assistance for crucial decisions. Click to continue reading...

Technology In Football: Common Sense Must Prevail

EPL Talk 08 May @ 09:26 AM EST

The fall out from Chelsea v. Barcelona on Wednesday night continues unabated today as PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has called for the use of technology in football to assist referees. Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We are putting referee's in too vulnerable a situation with the conspiracy theories that abound that UEFA would not want an all English final, it was an accident waiting to happen.

Barcelona to Sydney?

My headline got changed on The Roar site..personally think mine is way more interesting, and indeed my ending...now it's more mouse than roar.
EPL clubs to play pre-season matches in Australia.

Lessons from other sports: Union on the brink

A seat at the A-League 26 April @ 01:00 AM EST
Rugby union in Australia consolidated and then expanded. Mining money from Western Australia, reputed to be backed by South African expats, formed the Western Force. In doing so, stripped some of the best players and the young up-and-comers from the other 3 Australian teams. Result, Australian club teams are not competitive in the Super 14 and there is barely life in the domestic (local teams only) competition. Click to continue reading...

Weekend of upsets

Soccerphile World Cup Blog 28 September @ 07:47 PM EST
Last weekend's string of unpredictable results in the English Premier League has been mirrored in Australia proving the A-League remains as competitive as ever.

Which Adelaide Football Club is known in Japan and Asia?

Football in the Capital 23 September @ 04:35 PM EST

AFL v A-League: Trade Practices Act anyone?

A seat at the A-League 05 September @ 08:28 PM EST
The AFL is Australia's most successful and commercial sport. It has been steadily grinding other sports into the dust over the last 30 years. The next 20 years will see whether rugby league and rugby union can survive the onslaught.
The battles have been played out in the union and league heartlands of Sydney and Brisbane. Click to continue reading...

At the same time, the FFA decided not to charge Mark Bosnich for his un-carded professional foul on Massimo Murdocca. Click to continue reading...

Hull City

Albion Road 01 September @ 04:00 PM EST
By winning promotion to this season's Premier League Hull City can finally put to rest a title they have unhappily held for many years - the largest city in Europe never to have hosted a top division club. Any idea who is the new recipient of this dubious award? After years and years of muddling along in this rugby league hotbed, a new stadium and solid financial backing have catapulted Hull City up the ladder of English football. Where would you rather be?

A seat at the A-League 01 September @ 05:52 AM EST
In 2008, Australian sport has undergone turmoil. Basketball hit the wall with at least 3 teams disappearing. Women's basketball struggled against the rise of trans-tasman netball. CEO John O'Neil declared rugby union financial dead and 'boring'. Rugby league has 'grabbed the table' in its 100th year, with fans and players deserting on mass, and government redirecting money away. Click to continue reading...

Mike Cockerill wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald that Harry Kewell did what?
The 29-year-old scored for his new Turkish side, Galatasaray, in an opening-round win over Denizlispor last weekend, and has suggested part of his motivation for moving to Istanbul was to cut down the travelling time when he plays for his country in Asia.
