It may well be the preserve of Thursday nights and Channel Five, but the Europa League, now ready for the knock-out stages is still peppered with some of Europe's big guns. Probably the biggest in the competition, Manchester United, will face another all-time European great, Ajax, in the last 32, a tie which has more than a hint of glamour.

Jozy Altidore and Sacha Kljestan have both enjoyed individual club success this season, which in turn has led to their teams turning in strong results both domestically and in Europe. All of that will come to a head in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32, when their two teams will square off.

After 45 minutes it seemed that an unlikely conclusion was in prospect for our latest venture into the Europa League. With Spurs leading and 10 man Rubin Kazan losing to Paok, it looked as though we may turn over the three point and five goal deficit.

A 1-1 score line in Salonika eventually made anything we did irrelevant but our 4-0 win included debut strikes for Steven Pienaar and Harry Kane and a second goal in a Spurs shirt for Andros Townsend.

Chasing a huge goal difference swing and needing POAK to beat Rubin Kazan elsewhere, the odds were against Tottenham making it through to the knockout phases last night, but they held up their end of the bargain by racking up an impressive drubbing of Shamrock Rovers at the Tallaght Steven Pienaar, Andros Townsend (a real beauty, well worth watching the highlights for), Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane all bagging a goal apiece.

The business end of the 2011-12 Russian Premier League season began this weekend with the sixteen teams split into two groups of eight. Why Fulham shouldn't expect a Bale out at the Cottage today

Tottenham Hotspurs failed to present a gift for their coach, Harry Redknapp, who has just had an operation, after the Lilywhites' second string got beaten by Rubin Kazan in the latest Europa League group stage tie.

Meanwhile, Stoke City continues their excellent run in Europe by picking up another victory against Macabi Tel Aviv, proving their ability to compete with foreign teams in the competition yet still pretty competitive in the league.

Tottenham have more immediate concerns than the Europa League. Their manager Harry Redknapp's health, usurping Arsenal and Chelsea as the top team in London and qualifying for next season's Champions League. Why, though, is the Europa League so far down their list of priorities?
