It’s Over: USA vs Belgium

It was tough to sit and write anything about the US crashing out of the World Cup. Not because I have nothing to say, but rather I'm having trouble reconciling my feelings. Brimming withcontradictions, my head pulls me to the negative and my heart lifts me to the positive. The rational and the emotional.

Know Your Enemy: Belgium – We are Underdogs Again

We did it. We survived, when no one told us we could. But hold the celebrations, business is far from finished. The last time these teams met was just over a year ago in a friendly that ended with a 4-2 Belgium win. People are going to want to use comparisons between the two games, but don't. Both lineups look different, especially considering Klinsmann was still experimenting with lineups at that time.

Adios Chile

Chile were helpless to dispel pre-match predictions as Brazil ran out comfortable winners in Johannesburg. With their gung-ho style suiting Brazil's electric counter attacking football and Dunga's immaculate and ruthless record against Marcelo Bielsa's side to date, Chile were largely un-fancied despite the enterprising football that has won the hearts of football purists across the globe and a well deserved place in the second round but Brazil's professionalism shone through to not give Chile even a sniff.

The hype over this match is incredible. The number two FIFA ranked team in the world in Spain and the number three ranked team in Portugal. It's unfortunate that this match isn't happening deeper into the tournament. This Round of 16 match-up should be one for the ages.

Paraguay could not have predicted a better scenario. Not only do they help to knock out the defending champions, Italy, from even qualifying out of the group, but Paraguay won Group F in the process. Most expected them to be the second team out of the group, so winning the group was just the icing on the cake.

It is a beautiful sunny day in Durban. At 4pm, this afternoon Netherlands will take on Slovakia for a place in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Holland's best performance in the World Cup have been two trips to the final in 1974 and 1978, led by the Dutch legend Johan Cryuff.

When we were finally only 30 minutes from Johannesburg, the car died.

On paper this may look like a gross mismatch, but that's why football is played on grass instead. The talent level on Brazil is absolutely extraordinary. On the other hand, many football fans would be hard-pressed to name even a few of Chile's starters.

The Netherlands and Slovakia are two teams on the opposite side of the talent spectrum. It seems that the Netherlands at times can have too much talent. They have some trouble getting all their great players equal playing time, and it has shown at times when they are trying to figure out when to make substitutions.

Redemption. Revenge. Whether they want to admit it or not, those are the two key words the United States are focusing on. When Landon Donovan scored that was redemption for everything they went through in the group stage. Two clear goals were taken from them, and it took a stoppage time goal in the dying seconds of their match against Algeria to advance.

WOW ! Some great match-ups including a repeat of last season's final with Inter Milan facing Bayern Munich. The match-up that will likely garner more press is the Arsenal v Barcelona. The two clubs play similar styles though Barcelona is still the better side for my money. It's not impossible to think Arsenal could pull an upset but I remain unconvinced of their back 4 and they do not have an undisputed number 1 goalkeeper.
