Police in Southend are warning the public following a number of incidents where bogus callers,
pretending to be police officers, have duped mostly elderly householders into allowing them into
their homes and then stolen money from them.
Incidents were reported on March 4 in Rochford, Eastwood, Leigh and Westcliff where two white men,
aged between 28-50 claimed to be detectives investigating a nearby burglary and needing to check
the home to see if they had been burgled.
Longpier.com is delighted to announce the appointment of another team member. 18 year old Laura

New controls for Southend Airport have been agreed by Southend and Rochford councils, after

expansion plans happen, then operators will be forced to cut the number of night flights by 87%
from a proposed 900 a month to just 120.
Hundreds of residents in Rochford are joining forces to campaign against plans to build 326 new

As the country gears up for election day on May 6th, Longpier.com takes a look at the way the
residents of the Southend borough have voted in the past century.
Thanks to our friends at the Southend Timeline website, we've been able to trace back voting
preferences from 1918, to the last election - in 2005.

Numerous bands and revellers have hit out over the organisation of this weekend's SX Festival in
Rochford.
The two day event - held over 15th and 16th May - was meant to feature more than 80 bands over five
stages, but Longpier.com understands that several billed artists didn't turn up, due to what they
called, "poor organisation".
Barcelona lost. Lyon lost. Both defeats were put down, in part, to arduous journeys across
Europe by modes other than aeroplanes which sapped the energy of the players and left them
struggling through the first legs of their UEFA Champions League semi finals.
There is an element of truth in it but it is largely an excuse.
Within the last few minutes, it's been confirmed that the expansion of Southend Airport can go
ahead.
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government John Denham has said the plans, which
include extension of the runway to accomodate bigger planes, will not be referred to a public
inquiry and therefore work can begin.
It's emerged Southend Council is spending £70,000, over two years, to highlight and promote four
large road improvement schemes across the borough.
You may have seen the 'Better Southend' logos popping up since December on lampposts leading
to and from the roadwork sites at City Beach, Cuckoo Corner, Victoria Square and the Progress Road
junction with the A127.
A vivid splash of colour has sprung up along Southend's High Street, with an array of 40
eye-catching banners helping to highlight all the town has to offer.
The banners are part of a special initiative from the Southend Town Centre Partnership that aims to
promote a variety of themes, including 'Culture-on-Sea' and 'Shopping-on-Sea'.
Thanks to everyone who's been sending in photographs and videos of the snow. We've had scores of

Celia Riley, from Thorpe Bay, is a rare breed. Passionate about her job, she works twice the amount
of hours she's contracted for. For 50+ hours a week, her pay is relatively paltry. Her commitment
to what she does is unfaltering despite the challenging nature of the work involved. Yet, Celia is
slowly but surely raising the profile of a charity that's been quietly helping younger people and
their families living with dementia.
