Football match or riot police training video?

The gents of Pelotas and Gremio at least the latter, judging by the shirts enjoyed a prematch on-pitch brawl on the weekend as they attempted to get a little closer to their heroes, one would imagine. Many sticks then came out and one shirtless chap even had a large gun pointed at his head, which is exactly what one wants from an afternoon of leisurely, recreational football viewing.

Derbies are, by nature, torrid affairs. Some might say the same of most South American games, which is rather complimentary.

At first glance, the footage of Man City fans clashing with Madrid police may look like a throwback to the bad old days of English football nastiness. However, it does seem as though it's the police who are to blame for the trouble.

The camera phone video, which was shot ahead of City's Champions League clash with Real last week andposted on Youtube by blogger David Dubas-Fisher along with his graphic blog account of the nasty and largely unprovoked (beer was thrown) skirmish entitled 'The Ghost of Franco Returns to Haunt Manchester City'- shows the local riot police wading in to a crowd of City fans, hitting them with batons.

The Athens derby between the two strongest sides in Greek football, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos, had to be abandoned with eight minutes left after sadly predictable rioting broke out amongst the crowd (populated solely by Panathinaikos fans as, ironically, no Olympiakos fans were allowed to attend for fear of trouble)Â though, in actuality, the match was beset with violence and stupidity which began several hours before kick-off when hundreds of youths attempted to make their way into the stadium without tickets.

AEK fans celebrate cup win by ‘setting Greek football back 100 years’

By some grotesque strain of logic, it only seems natural that a season already wretchedly scarred by the "derby of shame" and PAOK fans hitting AEK players with flares would include a cup final that "set Greek football back over a hundred years," according to Atromitos president Giorgos Spanos.

His side lost to AEK by a score of 3-0 in a Greek Cup final in Athens' Olympic Stadium on Saturday that was cut short when AEK fans stormed the pitch and fought Atromitos and riot police with broken seats, advertising hoardings and whatever else they could turn into weapons.
