Fulham manager Martin Jol has surprised everyone by exchanging all of his first team squad
except Bryan Ruiz for Sheffield United's 2011 FA Youth Cup runner-up team.
"At first we looked at the Man United squad. They were the winners of that tournament, after
all, and I am not stupid.
Of all the issues that's been plaguing this club for years (age, changing of managers, the
Michael Jackson statue) one that has been overlooked, or brought up and then seemingly forgotten
whenever we go after the next shiny new transfer acquisition, is lack of speed from the wings.
Now, that's different from creativity from the wings.

Well that was no fun. Despite outplaying Fulham, luck was not on our side today, and we dropped two
important points at home. Credit goes to Schwarzer in particular for keeping them in it, while
RvP's prowess around the goal finally let him down today. Vermaelen was the goat for his howler of
an own goal, but he gained a measure of redemption with a header to level things late.

Other things:
Mark Schwarzer seems to be back to something like top form very impressed
Nice how Stephen Kelly has won people over another good game from him. It's a shame about
Zdenek Grygera though. He's looked a fine defender and this doesn't look like a minor injury, so
our thoughts are with him.

There's a bit of noise about how the defence isn't so good now.
People are really pleased with AJ's form.
Under Roy Hodgson we never had these problems in defence.
But the forwards really suffered.
All of the above is not a coincidence!
Under Hodgson we rarely committed men ahead of the ball.
I'm not trying to make one of those posts that exist solely to generate pageviews, but I'm
seriously wondering if it's time for Riise to start the next game on the bench.
What is he offering at this point that is so unique that different looks through Briggs or Baird
or Kelly can't provide?
In case you thought this list wasn't big enough, two more loaners to be added to the list.
Bjorn Helge Riise recently joined Portsmouth on loan until the November 7. And
turns out this fella named Richard Barroilhet joined Finnish club Vaasan
Palloseura until October 31 way back in August.
Nothing from me I was at Dad's for his birthday. Saw the MOTD highlights and it looked like
perhaps we were a shade unlucky: Kasami flagged offside (he'll get his first goal soon, eh?) when
it looked touch and go, Ruiz hitting the post from close in when a goal seem more likely. Really
though you wouldn't have expected us to unlock a Roy Hodgson defence away from home and 0-0 was to
be expected.
True or False: Damien Duff did not complete a single pass in the second half on Sunday.
Okay, that's a trick question. He didn't even attempt one.
Here is yesterday's passing chart. I don't know if the Guardian staffer fell asleep or it really
was that atrocious.
What may be worse than the sheer lack of passes is where three of the four completed outfield
passes went to: behind and to his left.
There are several ways to skin a cat. Here are some of Fulham's finest performances in the
last two seasons, and the starting elevens for each:
Man Utd 10/11, 2-2: Stockdale, Paintsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky, Duff, Etuhu, Murphy,
Davies, Dempsey, Zamora
Spurs 10/11, 4-0: Stockdale, Paintsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Salcido, Duff, Sidwell, Murphy,
Dempsey, Dembele, Johnson
Juventus 09/10, 4-1: Schwarzer, Kelly, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky, Duff, Baird, Etuhu, Davies,
Gera, Zamora
Basel 09/10, 3-2: Schwarzer, Smalling, Hughes, Kelly, Etuhu, Riise, Murphy, Greening, Gera,
Zamora
Liverpool 09/10, 3-1: Schwarzer, Paintsil, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky, Dempsey, Greening,
Baird, Duff, Zamora, Kamara
Man Utd 09/10, 3-0: Schwarzer, Paintsil, Hangeland, Hughes, Konchesky, Duff, Murphy, Baird,
Dempsey, Gera, Zamora
It's a team game, no?
A nice enough evening stroll for the men in white. It wasn't especially pretty or effective,
but a 7-1 aggregate win is emphatic enough.
The goals were all fairly routine and made us wonder why there weren't more of them. For 1-0 AJ
slipped through, and calmly finished, for 2-0 Senderos sent Duff scampering clear, and he calmly
finished, then Zamora scored at the far post to make it three, then Sidwell overcame a serious case
of finishing yips to make it four.

It sounds from here as if our opponents experimented in the second half, when they got the
goals. So that's not good is it?

The Norwegian national team, currently ranked 11th in the world, will be
placed in the top seeded pot when the qualification groups for the 2014 World Cup are drawn,
meaning that the Nordic country will avoid strong nations such as England, Germany and
Netherlands.
As I'm sure everyone is well aware the Premier League is jam packed with foreigners from all
corners of the globe. This practice has filtered down to the lower leagues, so I thought I'd begin
a series on foreign XIs in the Football League with this one on "Scandanavian" players in the
Championship.

Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal wrote an interesting story about the beneficial nature
of second-half subsitutes when a team is down. Citing the "Decision Rule" of Bret Myers, a
professor of management and operations at the Villanova School of Business, Diamond wrote:
[Myers] concluded that if their team is behind, managers should make the first substitution
prior to the 58th minute, the second substitution prior to the 73rd minute and the third prior to
the 79th minute.
