Peter Beardsley! The more I watch Benayoun the more I'm convinced that he is the current Liverpool
team's version of Beardsley.
Beardsley was an absolutely superb player for Liverpool, and anyone who had the privilege of
watching him play during the Dalgish era will know what I'm talking about.

Well, what a bloody day. Sometimes, it's worth getting up at 4am.
Travel to and from the match went without a hitch (for me and Garantia and least, EII very
nearly missed kick off due to the implosion of the underground or something).
We took our seats, all separate and Garantia managed to bag herself a move from a 22nd row seat
to a third row one by swapping with some man so he could sit beside his son (she would move again
at halftime as we talked some weird woman beside me to swap an 18th row seat for a third row one so
we could sit beside each other - yes, I actually had to convince her, and when I asked at first she
said 'maybe at halftime - seriously!

Good from the Arsenal. I'm popping online about 5 hours after the match, and none of the blogs I
read have updated.
Van Persie scored the opener. This match was available stateside in HD. ESPN is doing a good job
with their EPL coverage - much better than they had done with their CL coverage.

Liverpool were eliminated from the League Cup due to a 2-1 loss sustained at Arsenal's Ashburton
Grove home, but Rafael Benitez has insisted that the defeat will not dilute the feel-good factor
that engulfed Anfield following the Manchester United win at the weekend.
Pass-master Fran Merida opened the scoring in the first-half with a long-range effort, but the
visitors levelled the game with an equally impressive shot from Emiliano Insua.

Doesn't a head butt on Ljungberg count for anything? It's bad enough that Silvestre plays for
the Arsenal given the fact that he's a <insert vile swear word insinuating oddities about his
sexuality here> but to give him the captain's armband? That simply is stretching it.
Monsieur Wenger, you know I have been a vociferous fan and that I've never EVER spoken ill of
you.

I didn't put up a Weekend Round-up yesterday because I figured with the midweek round tomorrow,
it would be pointless to update everything twice. So we'll dive in straight to Goals of the Week.
Not as great as last week, but still some good goals, especially Daniele Mannini's one-time volley
vs.

See below for match highlights followed by Arsene Wenger's post-match
interview.
Tuesday's match with AZ Alkmaar was full of deja vu on so many levels. Arsenal created a similar
amount of chances to most of their other matches this season. Also, our inability to take our
chances and kill the game off with the second goal was reminiscent of last season.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has admitted he was focused on the inflatable beach ball during
Saturday's loss to Sunderland having lost sight of the real match ball.
Darren Bent's winning goal, which deflected off a ball thrown onto the pitch by a fan, was allowed
to stand by referee Mike Jones which meant Liverpool slumped to their third consecutive loss and
fourth of the season.

Jonny Evans had a great opportunity to score for Manchester United at the weekend but Jussi
Jaaskelainen did well to keep it out. This isn't the first time Evans has come close though, with
him rattling the woodwork following a diving header against Villarreal early last season.
The 21-year-old defender regrets his miss and feels he's doomed to never scoring.

AEK returned to the winners circle with a much needed but largely unimpressive victory over the
team from Komotini at OAKA.The visitors actually took the lead in the 26th minute when Majstorovic
got turned "inside out" by their striker Buval in the box and he left Saja clutching at air with a
nice finish.

Another multi-goal margin of victory. Another "more than two goals" tally. Another soft goal
conceded. Arsenal have seemingly picked up where they left off before the international break.
Birmingham's visit to North London proved to be an entertaining match that is open to
interpretation.

I watched the replay. The ref waved play on 5 times when Brisbane players were brought down in the
box. At least 2 were no argument penalties. Even the Fox commentators who were going on and on
about how bad Brisbane were admitted this.
There were Gold Coast and Brisbane fans on my bus on the way home and the only conversation was how
bad the ref was.

Chonburi FC have been ordered to play their final home game of the season at a neutral ground after
crowd trouble in the Thai Premier League this week.
Second-placed Chonburi drew 2-2 with relegation strugglers Chula United at Sirindhorn stadium on
Wednesday.
Their fans were furious that referee Chaovalit Sananwai disallowed a goal for off-side, a move that
dented Chonburi's chance of winning the title.

Sigh. International breaks are so boring. Not too much going on in the lead up to the games over
the weekend, but a few things have popped up so I thought I'd do a roundup/link dump of what's been
going on this week.
First, Adebayor said he "regrets" stomping on former teammate Robin van Persie's face last
month.

After the Texans finished polishing off the Raiders I decided to check in on the Orange. What
was the first thing I saw? It was Cam Weaver making an aggressive tackle and receiving a red card.
Well, I was watching a Spanish channel so he actually received a roja card. But don't worry, I'm
told it's the same thing as a red card.

Unless you are a die-hard New York Red Bulls fan or a San Jose Earthquakes fan, chances are you
missed their game last Saturday night, which means you probably didn't see Arturo Alvarez draw what
wound up being the match-winning penalty converted by Ryan Johnson.

Manchester United face Barnsley away in the next round of the League Cup, which is good news for
all of us who have been dragged in to the automatic cup scheme in order to apply for away
tickets!
United last faced Barnsley in the 97-98 season, where we thrashed them 7-0 in the league, thanks
to goals from Cole, Giggs, Scholes and Poborsky, but then were knocked out of the FA Cup by
them.

John has been sick. So he has asked me to update his blog.
There are two questions from this game:
1. were Perth prepared to cheat to win?
2. does Chris Beath have the skills to referee in the A-League.
Dad and I watched the replay on tv and it was pretty clear that the Roar, while making some bad
defensive mistakes ( is Bob Malcolm good enough to play in the A-League), dominated the game.

Javier Mascherano has escaped disciplinary action following his clash with Jermain Beckford at
Elland Road on Tuesday night.
The Liverpool midfielder appeared to strike his Leeds opponent with his arm as they tangled during
the Carling Cup third round tie, which the Reds won 1-0.
However, the contact has been deemed accidental and Mascherano will not face a ban for the
incident.

Arsenal Striker Eduardo: Heading for the Olympics?
If he's not, he damn well should be.
I despise people who dive in matches, so much so that I'd happily shout abuse at one of my own
team who decided to take a tumble, and have before resorted to shouting 'Get up you nonce' at them
down the pub.

Thanks to Eduardo, diving has once again risen to the summit of football's trendy topic
list.
Whatever the rights or wrongs of the UEFA charge and its subsequent overturning on appeal, the
majority view was Eduardo purposely exaggerated the challenge and the ensuing penalty was harsh on
Celtic (even Arsene Wenger admitted as such).

If you believe what you have read recently then you would think that Arsenal are a load of cheating
bastards. Not the type of bastards who cheat on their missus but the type who cheat on the football
pitch.
Say you came from Mars, just landed in England and developed an interest in football you would
probably reckon that Eduardo invented the dive and that Eboue thinks he is the new Maradona.

A lot of people, particularly Chicago Fire fans, are asking what exactly referee Mark Geiger saw
when he awarded the penalty that lead to the Columbus Crew tying the game and leaving Chicago with
a sort-of-deserved point. At full speed, the replay looks very much like Steven Lenhart kung-fu
kicking Wilman Conde.

The ex-UEFA Cup is planning on adding two referees to the games today. One on each on the goal-line
as a sort of 'human camera' to have a close eye on the action.
Soccer's governing bodies have approved the move to head off repeated calls for
referees to get help from video technology. There have been several recent incidents of balls
clearly crossing the line, but the goals not counting because the three officials couldn't see
it.

Well well well. Football is a funny old game, eh? We played well at Old Trafford and lost, last
night we played genuinely badly and won. For all the pain of having to sit through a performance
like that I know which I prefer at the end of 90 minutes.
In all my years of watching Arsenal I can't remember us starting a game quite so disastrously so
quickly.
