FC Dallas and Ferreira officially break up

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

On Monday afternoon, the first shoes officially started to drop with the FC Dallas off-season as the club announced it would not be picking up the options on Erick, David Ferreira and Ramon Nunez for 2014, three pretty easy decisions to say the least. Here's a look at each player:

David Ferreira Ferreira served this club well in both 2009 and 2010, when he was MLS MVP.

Could we see some of these players in the final two matches?

Now that FC Dallas has officially been eliminated from playoff contention, maybe it's time for head coach Schellas Hyndman and the organization to get a look at some players who might not normally get a look with the first team, especially at this time of year. So, who can FCD supporters expect to see in these final two matches?

Ramon Nunez: It’s Been a Frustrating Year

When FC Dallas decided to add Ramon Nunez to the roster during preseason, we all saw the move for what it was, a low-risk addition that could deliver a huge payoff. Nunez was of course coming off knee surgery during his stay in England and if he could rebound from that procedure and return to fitness, then the conventional thinking was that he would be able to contribute sometime after the early part of the season.

FCD Numerology: No 9, true greatness indeed

Just mentioning No. 9 as being the number worn by Jason Kreis alone makes that digit one of the most famous in the history of the Dallas Burn/FC Dallas. Of course, that number was also worn by the likes of Hugo Sanchez, Jeff Cunningham and even Blas Perez, guys that aren't exactly pushovers in the least.

The FC Dallas reserves trailed Toronto FC 1-0 after 24 minutes but FCD responded for three unanswered, two of which were scored by local product Ramon Nunez, his second two-goal game for the reserves in six games, and Dallas handed TFC a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday morning.

The Reds drew first blood when Kyle Bekker scored 24 minutes in for the visitors, giving TFC a 1-0 advantage.

FCD Coach discusses Jackson and Nunez

Two of the more intriguing players currently on the FC Dallas roster are midfielders Jackson and Ramon Nunez. Of course, Jackson has been here since the 2010 season and while he has shown flashes of greatness, he has been wildly inconsistent, much to the lament of Hyndman and his staff.

"We'd all like to see more consistency out of him, right?

Zach Loyd as the lone expiring contract for FCD

3rd Degree at related • 0 views

During a brief conversation with FC Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo early last week, he confirmed that right back Zach Loyd is the only current member of the FCD roster whose contract will expire at the end of the season.

Loyd and the club did not reach terms on a contract extension during the off-season and it is club policy under Clavijo not to do extensions during the season.

FCD Numerology: 21 truly a mixed bag

The No. 21 has had an interesting history for the Dallas Burn/FC Dallas. On one hand, such names as Ramon Nunez and Greg Vanney have donned those digits. However, others like Johann Noetzel and Alvaro Sanchez, definitely forgettable names in club history, have also worn No. 21. Homegrown defender London Woodberry currently wears these digits for FCD, taking the number earlier this year when he was inked to a pro contact at age 21.

Ramon Nunez struggling to find spot with FCD

When FC Dallas decided to take a flier and sign Ramon Nunez during preseason, most just saw the potential upside with such a move. Of course, this was the W.T. White High School's product second stint with FCD but first under current head coach Schellas Hyndman, who also coached him as a collegian at SMU.

FCD Numerology: perfect 10s

As Buzz Carrick so eloquently put it in his fine piece from several weeks ago about the lineage of soccer numbers, the No. 10 will always hold a special place in the lore of the beautiful game. And it's no different in the history of the Dallas Burn/FC Dallas.

David Ferreira, who won the MLS MVP in 2010, has worn those storied digits since arriving in Frisco in 2009, but he's one of several big names to wear the number over the past decade-plus.

And while some of these additions can be directly credited to him, others cannot. But for the sake of conversation, here is a list of everyone who has been added under the former Rapids head coach:

Hyndman questions Nunez’s place in squad

Ramon Nunez nearly netted an equalizer in the waning moments of Saturday's 1-0 loss by FC Dallas to Stoke City FC of the English Premier League with a free kick that was denied by a great diving save at the far post by the Potters' backup goalkeeper.

Of course, this is Nunez's second stint with the club and while he recently battled fitness issues, he did net a pair of goals in the FCD Reserves' first win of the season last Tuesday but it remains to be seen how many minutes he will play in the near future, especially given what Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman said after last night's loss to the Potters.

Remember the last time FCD faced Chivas USA on the Fourth? Ramon Nunez does.

The only other time FC Dallas has hosted Chivas USA in Frisco on the Fourth of July came in 2007 under then head coach Steve Morrow. Dominic Oduro and Ramon Nunez hit the back of the canvas for FCD in a 2-0 win over the Red-and-White.

Nunez's goal, one where he went upper 90 from beyond the top of the arc, came in the 41st minute of what was then a scoreless affair.

In the 85th minute of Saturday's 2-2 draw at Colorado, Ramon Nunez officially began his second stint with FC Dallas when he entered the game for Fabian Castillo. Nunez, who had previously played for FCD between 2004 and 2007, returned to the club during preseason after a knee injury ended his season in England last fall.

If Ferreira can’t go, could Blas Perez fill in as FCD’s No. 10?

While it remains to be seen whether or not David Ferreira, who left in the second half of a 1-1 draw with Portland on Wednesday night with a hamstring injury, will be able to play on Saturday night against DC United, one has to wonder if indeed the 2010 MLS MVP can't answer the bell then who would fill in for him?

FCD undecided on where biggest need lies in midfield

Last week, a story was written about FC Dallas looking to add a potential high-profile midfielder once the summer transfer window. Of course, many thought that meant that FCD would be adding someone it envisioned as a starter and someone who could be a Designated Player.

After training on Tuesday, Dallas technical director Fernando Clavijo confirmed that the club does indeed have sufficient room under the salary cap to add such a player that an additional roster move wouldn't be necessary.

While for the most part, FC Dallas is a relatively healthy team, there are currently three major exceptions. Midfielder Ramon Nunez, whoisn'tyet officially on the FCD roster, continues to recover from knee surgery last fall in England. Rookie defender Walker Zimmerman, Dallas' top pick in the 2013 draft, is still being bothered by a groin issue that has kept him from training with the team thus far and last year's captain Ugo Ihemelu remains on the shelf after suffering a concussion in a May 2012 loss to Colorado.

Schellas Hyndman: Ramon Nunez Logical Choice to Back up David Ferreira

Since FC Dallas decided not to bring back Ricardo Villar, the club is pretty much heading into the 2013 season without a viable backup for No. 10 David Ferreira, the 2010 MLS MVP. Of course, this won't be an issue unless "El Torito" gets injured, which he did in 2011 and then proceeded to miss the next 14 months with an ankle injury.

With the current dip in form from David Ferreira at central attacking midfielder, a drop off that is clearly due to him again being the league leader in fouls suffered, which has led to the 2010 MLS MVP currently battling both an ankle and quadriceps injury, both of which make "El Torito" a game-time decision for this weekend's match with Real Salt Lake.

When FC Dallas acquired Je-Vaughn Watson from a trade with Houston back in February, the initial thought was that Watson, who had seen regular minutes with the Dynamo over the past few seasons, was brought in to provide some much-needed depth at holding midfield.

However, FCD Head Coach Schellas Hyndman has come to realize that maybe the best spot for Watson isn't in the middle.
