Whaaaaaaat?! 2 posts in 2 days? What's going on?
Yeah, as soon as I make my triumphant return to blogging, some big news drops 2 hours after I
update and post. Oh well. The Quakes released their protected list last night and some interesting
names are on the list and off the list. We'll look at the lists after the jump.
Andres Ramiro "Manga" Escobar was once again a transfer target of the Philadelphia Union,
according to Italian news outlet Il Secolo XIX.
The 20-year-old Colombian winger originally popped up on the Union's radar when reports out of
Colombia placed Philadelphia and the Portland Timbers as possible landing spots for the under-20
international, back during the 2011 MLS preseason.
While Palo Alto and Stanford Stadium hosted an impressive 4th of July fireworks show, albeit on
July 2nd, the match itself also had its share of fireworks. The Quakes came off as a bit more
feisty and had the majority of fouls on the night, resulting in Bobby Burling picking up 2 yellows
and being forced out of the game.
Colombian newspaper El Pais is reporting that Andrés Ramiro 'Manga' Escobar will stay with
Deportivo Cali, in Colombia, for the remainder of the season.
The 19-year-old left winger was not able to to finalize an agreement with MLS or one of its
teams in order to move to America. Helmuth Wenin, Escobar's agent, decried the wall of time that
his client was up against to complete a transfer.
Earlier today, the Brotherly Game identified a report from the Colombian news outlet El Pais
that claimed young midfielder/forward Andres Ramiro "Manga" Escobar could be on his way to the
Philadelphia Union.
I've dug up a few more tidbits on Escobar from that article and elsewhere. Here's the most
interesting snippet from the El Pais report:
Colombian newspaper El Pais reported today that striker Andrés Ramiro Escobar is set to have
his future decided by the "start of business on Friday." The just-turned-20-year-old (his birthday
is today) will go to either the Portland Timbers or Philadelphia Union, according to the
report.
Escobar is currently with Deportivo Cali in the Colombian top league, Categoría Primera A.
Luis Moreno has struck again, and this time he chose an opponent. The Panamanian defender
currently plying his trade in Columbia with Deportivo Pereira faced widespread condemnation back in
February after fatally booting an injured owl off the field of play. The mascot of their opponents
and hated rivals Junior Barranquilla, the owl had landed on the field and was struck by a pass.
