Soccerblog 01 November @ 04:03 PM EST
The MLS playoffs have been engrossing and so far the upstarts have given the finger to the
favourites.
This time it was the Revs taking it to the Fire who had all their big named players while the
Revs have been without Twellman and Ralston. But the Revs African contingent stepped up admirably
as Sainey Nyassi, Emmanuel Osei, and Kenny Mensally had a huge game.

By Graig Carbino - ALBANY, NY (Oct 8, 2009) USSoccerPlayers -- Show of hands, who remembers where
they were on September 3rd, 2005? Not sure? Think Ralston and Beasley, a close-range header and a
smartly executed corner kick routine. Memories jogged hopefully by now, this fateful day just so
happens to be the last time the United States National Team qualified for a World Cup.

Week 30 (10/07)
Last Week's Ranking in Parenthesis...
- Columbus (1): The Crew finally lost @ home, but still lead the race for the
Shield.
- Chivas USA (3): Preki's Goats got a huge W @ RFK and have the most
games left.

1) Shalrie Joseph for MVP? It seems like all the forces are converging and settling on him after
his player of the week performance. Today alone, there were three articles touting his candidacy
from Ives Galarcep (Soccer By Ives), Ridge Mahoney (Soccer America), and Kyle McCarthy
(Goal.com).
He has a lot of things going for him.

So, no points in New England. It happens. Everyone got all excited when we went ahead, but when
you're relying on world class goals (and damn, that was amazing), you're going to come up
short.
As for the Revs, I can't see New England going very far in the playoffs, especially if Ralston's
badly injured.

The Houston Dynamo are not the only ones suffering through a run of bad form in recent days. I need
to come in out of the fog as well.
Three weeks ago, I was swimming along with a .452 prediction rate at 70-85, feeling pretty good
about myself at 19 games above just throwing darts blindfold at a board.

Happy August Everybody!

I guess it's to be expected as the league gets bigger and bigger, but this year's rookie class is
on pace to equal or break a record. What is it? The most rookies who started at least half of the
regular season games. The record is 10, and already 9 rookies this season are virtually certain to
hit that mark (15 starts):
- Darrius Barnes (NE)
- Matt Besler (KC)
- Sam Cronin (TOR)
- Stefan Frei (TOR)
- Omar Gonzalez (LA)
- Jeremy Hall (LA)
- Chris Pontius (DC)
- Rodney Wallace (DC)
- Steve Zakuani (SEA)
Breaking the record is going to be hard, as some less hyped players will have to lock down a
starting role.

When New England defender Emmanuel Osei received a red card in the 31st minute of last night's game
between KC and New England the cheers from the crowd were joined with a few groans. As I've
mentioned earlier, the Wizards have struggled to score when they're a man up. Last night, the
Wizards finally did it, taking advantage of the man up to score 2 more goals and defeat the
Revolution 3-1.

Steve Ralston converted a highly controvesial refereeing decision into a game-winning penalty kick
in the 90th minute ending D.C. Uniteds seven match unbeaten streak in MLS.

The Rapids started hot, again, and gave up the tying goal instead of going for a second, again. The
game started well, with Conor Casey putting a looping header into the back of the net off a Jordan
Harvey cross in the 3rd minute. As is typical with the Gary Smith-led Rapids, the team could not
hold the 1 goal lead for more than 20 minutes.

The winner of this past week's player interview poll was the Wizards' right back, Lance Watson. Out
at practice yesterday, Thad from The Back Post and I were able to speak with Watson for a few
minutes. Watson talks about being in the starting lineup now and his contribution to the team. He
talks about winning the ball back after he loses it, relating it to his former play as a
midfielder.

Prior to yesterday's match, Sean Donahue and I made our predictions, as is our custom. I believe he
said Kenny Mansally would score more goals than Taylor Twellman, but wouldn't be surprised if it
ended 0-0. I stuck with my previously published prediction of 2-2, and offered that either Mansally
or Sainey Nyassi would score.

Who doesn't love a giant-killer game? Despite being at home, the Rapids were the dogs on Sunday
and they knew it. They had to shut down Blanco and McBride, and they did it. That's going to (or at
least should boost the confidence). It should also help that this was our first back-to-back win
all year.

New England and Chivas USA are down to the wire tonight to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions
League group stage. They were unable to get results on the road, and are now left to prove their
strength at home.

I've been watching from the start, but had some connection problems.
4 - DeRo from distance, off the post.
6 - Announcers discuss Igwe, correctly asses that Jay Heaps was unjustly suspended from the final
in the Atlante scrum.
8 - Joseph with a scorcher from distance. High.
10 - This game has had a ton of intensity from the start.

MLS Rumors 20 July @ 09:54 PM EST
Three words Columbus:Sort. It. Out.
We got several reports about incidents at the Crew friendly with West Ham but decided to sit on
them until tomorrow morning. We are so often accused of being anti-Columbus and biased against Crew
fans, so why rush to spread more bad news?Well the following story is going out over the AP Wire so
if you Columbus fans think we're biased for running this then we suggest you take up your protest
with the Associated Press and save your breath here.

a list that included Juan Pablo Angel, Pat Onstad, Dwayne DeRosario, Jim Brennan, Pablo Mastroeni,
Edson Buddle and Christian Gomez.
