The USL Announced their Team Of The Week on Tuesday for week 17 of the USL-1
season and Quavas Kirk was on that team for the second time this year. Kirk also
made the team for the 13th week of the season. Both honors have come in games against the league
contender Portland Timbers and both times have been for his newly found defensive skills.

This is our second of four posts in review of the moves DC United has made since the end of last
season. Last week we looked at their acquisitions, today we'll look at the players who departed,
and then later we'll look at their trades.
1. It's hard to imagine how different DC United's season would be had they retained Marcelo
Gallardo in 2009.

Ever wonder what happened to the guys from long ago? Yeah, me too, but that will take a little
more digging. Until then, here's the latest on the latest former Galaxy guys.
After training with Seattle Sounders FC in the preseason, Ely Allen is now
playing for USL's (Premier Development League) Seattle Wolves FC.

You know, we hadn't kicked it with Allen Hopkins in a minute. Looks like dude has been hanging with
Quavas Kirk or at least borrowing his suits. And what else has happened in that long minute? DC
United is back on top, Chris Klein joins the 300 Club, and the Philadelphia starts organizing the
Union.

The big one this weekend is the rematch between
Houston and
New
York, which you can read about in today's USA TODAY or right here.
Houston just seems to go through this every year, and while it was a deflated locker room at RFK
last weekend, no one's too concerned.

Kickoff!
1 - Sully thinks DC's high pressure to deny service will be key to the game.
3 - Quavas Kirk with a shot after DC had a nice run of play. It's Q's first start this season.
5 - Andre Rocha is down and now on the sideline with an injury.

From United for D.C.'s Executive Director, Sara Peterson:
On Thursday, September 11, six members of D.C. United assisted 30
youth from United for D.C.'s United Soccer Club in the "Shop with a Player" experience at
Dick's Sporting Goods. Marc Burch, Quavas Kirk, Bryan Namoff, Clyde Simms, Zack Wells and Mike
Zaher accompanied a group of five kids on a $100 shopping spree throughout the sporting goods store
in Bailey's Crossroads.

Though most Americans have today off to celebrate the last year's worth of labor, United's
players were at RFK for a couple hours with their sights set on Wednesday night's Open Cup final.
Everyone who is healthy played signifcant minutes against New York over the weekend - either in the
first team's 0-0 draw on Saturday or in the reserve's 2-1 win on Sunday - so the team gathered for
a couple of runs, a long stretch and training room treatment today.

WASHINGTON, DC (Aug. 31, 2008) – The D.C. United reserves defeated the New York Red Bulls
reserves 2-1 Sunday morning at the RFK Training Complex on the strength of two goals by Ryan
Cordeiro. With the win, United moves to 5-4-1 (16 pts.) while the Red Bulls dropped to 2-5-0 (6
pts.) in the MLS Reserve Division.

Or at least they are tied with the 2006 team as the worst ever.
By running their winless streak to 10 games with a 2-2 tie Saturday against the New England
Revolution, the Galaxy tied the mark for the longest winless stretch in club history, first set in
2006 when the Galaxy went 0-8-2 from May 6 until June 24.

Prior to D.C. United's victory over the Colorado Rapids I honestly predicted the final score to
be, D.C. United 3 – Colorado 0. Now, it's true that I always predict that D.C. United will
win 3-0, but for the first time since August 5th of last season I was correct. I owe it all to
Quavas Kirk.

A 3-0 scoreline is pretty good, eh? Some in the press box were calling it the most complete
United game of the year and it's tough to disagree. Three goals scored, a shutout and players
working for their teammates all over the pitch. Two absolute stunners from Joe Vide and Santino
Quaranta and a opportunistic Quavas Kirk gets his first career regular season goal.

The DCenters 23 August @ 08:50 PM EST
Given this season, it's probably presumptuous to admit this, but I was fairly confident at 1-0.
United looked like a team in control, like a team that wasn't going to commit some insanely stupid
maneuver and let Colorado back into the match. I was relatively positive at 1-0. The fact that
United then added two late goals, including that great strike from Tino, to get to three goals was
a bonus.

With his one-time shoe-string shot to give the team a 1-0 lead, I could have sworn I was watching
Benny Olsen. Or maybe Benny Feilhaber. But definitely somebody named Benny. Nope, it was Joe Vide.
That goal really made me wish I was listening to Dave Johnson and Thomas Rongen do the broadcast. I
could just hear Rongen saying his usual "Shoelaces.

Despite knocking on wood as often as possible, I hate to admit that I called this. DC United was
consistently crappy early in the year, and was consistently victorious just before the start of
Superliga, but at all other times of the season, we've been horribly inconsistent. The team once
again failed tonight to string together victories.

Head Coach Tom Soehn continues to have to deal with player injuries and absences heading into
tonight's match with the Revolution. Ivan Guerrero is with the Honduran National Team for their
World Cup qualifier in Mexico this evening, while Gonzalo Martinez is serving a one-game suspension
for yellow card accumulation.

We're about an hour from kickoff now, and Head Coach Tom Soehn has named his lineup. The big
change is that newcomer Louis Crayton - who was officially signed yesterday - will get the start in
goal ahead of Zach Wells.
Here's the full squad: Louis Crayton; Bryan Namoff, Devon McTavish, Marc Burch, Gonzalo
Martinez; Fred, Clyde Simms, Santino Quaranta, Ivan Guerrero; Jaime Moreno, Luciano Emilio.

So the main question posed throughout our series in review of the player acquisitions, departures,
and trades made by DC United since the end of last season is whether or not the club is actually
better off now than they were last year. Let's review, position by position.

I've been accused of being thin-skinned, and I probably am in certain respects. Perhaps, then I can
relate a bit to Neven Subotic.
I'm not surprised that Neven has serious doubts about playing for the U.S. and is likely to want to
suit up for another country instead.
I met a teen-aged Neven in Peru at the 2005 U17 World Cup, when he was playing for the U.

To finish in last place in the tournament that we all had charted as our lowest priority this year
isn't exactly a tragedy. It's a little bit disheartening, but not discouraging. Because I think the
team played quite well, considering our current injury status and packed schedule. And I also think
we showed more and maybe deserved better than the 3-1 loss last night and zero overall points in
Superliga.

Kickoff is just around the corner and Tom Soehn has named his starting lineup. With a few tired
players after a bunch of games during the last month, the coaching staff has decided to rest a few
key players. Here's the eleven that will take the field to start against Houston:
Zach Wells; Bryan Namoff, Pat Carroll, Devon McTavish, Marc Burch; Craig Thompson, Clyde Simms,
Fred, Ryan Cordeiro; Luciano Emilio, Francis Doe.

The big addition to today's 18-man roster is the inclusion of Santino Quaranta to the
substitute's bench. Tino hasn't played since the team's 4-1 win over the Galaxy on June 29, when he
left the game after just 27 minutes with a hamstring strain.
Here's tonight's starting lineup:
Zach Wells; Bryan Namoff, Devon McTavish, Marc Burch, Gonzalo Martinez; Craig Thompson, Clyde
Simms, Jaime Moreno, Fred; Luciano Emilio, Francis Doe.
